The writer George RR Martin specified MULTIPLE times during interview that the books are suppose to be like written by Maesters and that they may have modified certain events and outcome. This gives him more leniency for the shows but also gives a good explanation for situations like Daemon killing his wife. It also, explain why in the books certain characters you thought were unfavorable are actually not the monsters they were described as.

I read Fire and Blood 3 times. In my opinion, all the small changes the show made from the books thus far, are much better. The Dance of Dragons from Fire and Blood is not a story told in conventional ways, but rather through accounts from 3rd parties, many of which have a shallow sense of validity. That is why the changes the show made and the direction they took certain things is far better, imo. I love this show immensely now.

Of course not, but it's all we have to go on so we have little choice. Agreed! I'd argue that the show follows the structure and intent of the original plot, but makes it much more character-focused. This makes sense given that we are seeing it from their POV and not from records written by other people. The changes so far have only made the material more dramatic and enjoyable.

Throughout the show we see a clear culture clash between the Targaryens and the older more established houses especially the Hightower’s. A story of a clash between the old and new worlds. The Targaryens the last of old Valyria representing the classical east with its dragons blood magics and esoteric rituals being the outsiders to Westeros. While Hightower’s being one of the oldest houses in Westeros with their close relationship with the citadel. They represent the faith of the seven a more modern conservative Christian attitude of medieval England. Considering this show is being overseen by George himself I think some of these changes are deliberate. The story as told in the book is history written by the maisters who see magic and dragons as an invasive species. The dance of the dragons could be seen( with the victory of the green faction) as the taming of the Targaryens with their more Valyrian bloodline represented by Renyara and Deamon curtailed the dragons weakened and dying. Through this show George could be showing us the truth behind the real characters and to question the established lore even if he’s the one that wrote it.

I am baffled some people still think the show is picking the side of the Blacks. I too hoped that the show would take a more neutral approach towards this conflict, and I'm quite happy with how it turned out. Rhaenyra is the primary point of view character in these early episodes, but the show definitely doesn't shy away from her flaws and shortcomings. Same for Daemon, Viserys, Corlys and Rhaenys. There is even one person who likes Alicent or Otto more in the books? I don't think so. I can't wait to see Rhaenyra and Alicent's children next episode.

Too many are being distracted by the 'badass' moments to miss the implications. The Blackwood/Bracken duel is a perfect example, everyone remembers the boy killing his bully but ignore the fact that Rhaenyra was terrible throughout the scene, insulting Lords of Noble Houses, mocking Blackwood which incentivised Bracken to do the same, not taking charge and ordering them to stop like Baratheon attempts to do, finally ignoring all the other suitors who travelled all the way to Storm's End to make their case. Rhaenyra and Daemon have demonstrated how overwhelmingly terrible they are and how easily they make people dislike them but viewers are being distracted by muh dragons and Daemon acting like a 'badass' (or in other words, a contemptible excuse for a human being who is creating as many enemies as he can).

The king's illness is really interesting and sad because of the real world reasons why it persists and escalates. Even if it was just the cuts, the fact he was probably stressed and on edge for 90 per cent of his reign, the constant anxiety of being an uncertain ruler and the grief of the death of his wife and child could have easily been the cause of imbalances that would lead to something like this. Some level of emotional distancing/blocking is a requirement of leadership and it's clearly what this guy lacks, he debates things til the 13th hour because of it and that doomed him. I love the idea that the true killer was his empathy and all he probably needed was a vacation and his family to act right but the maester boys just didn't have occupational health department

Honestly the show makes Viscerys really sympathetic. He’s just trying to do the right thing. I mean the worst crime you could possible accuse him of is marital rape of Alicent but even that’s somewhat justified. I mean given the whole context of the marriage, you can easily argue he’s not just doing it to get his rocks off but to strengthen his line. Given they didn’t have artificial insemination back then, as evidenced with Rhaenyra and her late husband, there’s really only one way to do that. To be frank I think a lot of people who are saying he’s a bad guy don’t understand the importance of duty, especially back then. Most of what he does isn’t even because he wants to do it, but rather because he’s required to. Like choosing to kill Aemma, what other choice did he have? Even if Aemma would have survived the labor, to even suggest they should have just let the kings only son and heir die in the womb could be seen as treasonous. Arguably, if he wasn’t expected to have one, Viscerys might have not have even wanted a son. He seemed perfectly content with Rhaenyra and you could make the argument he was a better father to her than to Aegon or Aemond. But again, he was forced into it by duty. The Iron Throne made the choice for him. It’s the same with saying Luc was wrong for attacking Aemond after the latter impugned his honor by loudly questioning his legitimacy. It’s looking at things from an entirely modern perspective. Today someone insults you and you’re supposed to let it slide, if it drastically affects your reputation and ability to earn a living you can seek compensation but that’s about it. Back in those days, an insult was on par with a physical attack.

Nice vid but you made some assumptions. You explained the first scene as if Daemon intentionally made her fall from her horse as if that was the plan… but that theory doesn’t make sense since Daemon walks away after she falls (before Rhea insults him for not finishing the job). I think the writers purposely left Daemon’s motive/intent up to the viewer’s interpretation. So predicting his intent and sharing theories is fine but you explained it as if it was factual. You said he made the horse fall on her as if you can simply just plan for someone to get knocked off their horse. How could he predict how the horse would respond? Especially a horse with an experienced and competent rider on it like Rhea. For that to have been intentional, he would’ve had to known the horse would startle and fall on top of her… and there’s just no way to plan that unless he’s psychic or knows the horse startles and bucks at his touch or when being approached. I personally think he just took advantage of an opportunity. Hence why he steps on her arm to see that she is paralyzed. If his plan was to murder her right then and there, it doesn’t make sense how the scene actually plays out.

Thanks for providing the BEST explanation as to why I thought this was the WORST episode to date. I watched it THREE times in a ROW on Sunday night, and I've been watching video after video here on KZbin trying to figure WTF was happening at the wedding and going from thinking Criston is a pathetic lovesick sap (I wanted Raenyra to turn to him when he made such an idiotic proposal to her & say, 'You know NUTHIN', Criston Cole') into a murderous lunatic at the end while he was hardly in the rest of the episode. I couldn't even figure out what the 'Prince of Kisses' said to him that threw him into such a murderous hissy fit ... and then to trying to commit suicide! He should have just committed suicide in the FIRST place! Not that I could tell HIM apart from the Lonmouth twins since all 'THREE' of them look exactly the SAME to me! Everything in the episode felt so rushed, it totally makes sense that HBO didn't have the budget to do the series justice (they can't even afford LIGHTING!!!) and just smushed an entire book into ONE episode! Apparently only people who've read the books can follow what's happening on the show. Whereas Episode 4 went on for WAAAY too long with the play and their adventures in Fleabottom & the gratuitous sex in the pleasure house and the endless seduction scene of Ser Criston and then after ONE night of sex, he's suddenly besotted & ready to KILL someone after accusing Raenyra of making him her 'whore' (did she actually PAY him???) ... He belongs in a NUTHOUSE! In fact, they SHOULD execute him for ruining everything. It's also frustrating that in every previous episode that, while Viserys was trying to be a GOOD king by keeping the peace, when push came to shove, he could stand up to anyone and tell them off, yet he says NOTHING about ANYTHING during all the interruptions at the wedding as if he's just a spectator. I know they have to cover his entire arm with a 'poultice' to cover up all of Paddy Considine's tattoos, but I can't believe that, given the state he's in, just falling over at the end of the wedding vows, he'll still be alive at the next time jump, which is, what, TEN YEARS?!!! Oh, and is there any nautical-themed souvenir they forgot to put in Corlys's tacky throne room? As if he doesn't already LIVE in the middle of the sea and can't just look out the window if he wants to see it? The place looks like a blue whale threw up in it! Is this HOTD or 'The Little Mermaid'??? And his throne looks as uncomfortable as Viserys's, like he should have severe scoliosis from sitting on it for so log awaiting Vyseris's miles-long trek to his throne room in his obviously infirm state JUST to decide that Leanor and Raeynyra are getting married and whose last name they should have! Couldn't they have done that by courier? Couldn't his Hand just have accompanied Raenyra to meet her betrothed? Since it's an arranged marriage anyway, why did she even need to meet him first? To show, as you said, how modern she is in her thinking about accepting her gay future husband? If Corlys & Rhae-whatever are so determined to join their houses, why didn't THEY go to King's Landing & make him propose to her, especially if they couldn't just have made arrangements by crow! Or seagull in keeping with the theme they can't get enough of; they make sick Viserys travel by SEA instead??? And after his long, wasted trip, I totally MISSED the fact that they were suddenly back at the Red Keep for the wedding; I thought it was all still happening in some other room on Driftmark, but I guess HBO only could afford ONE! And now to find out that Matt Daemon didn't even BELONG in this episode .... UGGGGGHHHHH! I HATE HIM with every fiber of my being, he sounds just like his dorky version of the Doctor the 11th except when speaking Valyrian (which he should do ALL the time!), and if they try to redeem him on this series and depict him as some kind of Yin-Yang character, I will STOP watching!!! (He's 100% Yang, and Ser Criston is 100% Yin: FLAT characters either miscast or poorly portrayed.) I don't want to end up wasting five years of my life on yet ANOTHER excessively gorey, violent, & crappy adaptation of a Game of Thrones story whether it's approved as an 'alternate canon' by George R.R. -Tolkien- Martin (who copies not just Tolkien's NAME but signature emblem) or not! (And he DID say at Comic-Con that he'd seen it all up to Episode 9 and was PLEASED with the result while even refusing to NAME its forerunner!) (Why do _I_ need to get a 'job' or a 'hobby' when there are like 30 people right here on KZbin whose 'job'/'hobby' is making these KZbin videos? I THANKED this one person for explaining why Episode FIVE made no sense compared to the other FOUR episodes!) Oh, and I used to have a professional career and worked up to 3 jobs at a time plus many active hobbies and a bachelor's degree. I'm now disabled in constant pain & can't get out of bed.
