The magnification rule is not a metaphor. The silo and its surveillance systems are made using tech well advanced of what is currently allowed. High level magnification would allow people to see circuits and nano tech that would raise questions that could not be ignored.

@@meoff7602 The drill chamber is the lowest level according to the Silo blueprints. I've seen no mention of any mines in the blueprints

The stairs are made to separate the upper, midst and down but the most important is to delay messages from each level but also make it hard for rebellions. If the downside or midst rebel then it takes a while for them to climb. Remember it would take like a day for the sheriff in the top to go all the way down to the generator

Pretty obvious reason for the lack of elevators, least to me. It is meant to keep the upper and lower classes separate. It is to stop rebellions. With the cops having radios only they can radio up for when the lower levels rebel. Since they are the mechanics they could override elevators to get up faster. Since they have to run the stairs TO rebel. Doing that with weapons and equipment to fight versus going down from top.

I agree. I think the way the bridges were blown in the dead silo shows how it would make it a lot easier to sever the levels if they had to.

I've definitely enjoyed both. While i have read the Dune books (most of them anyway) I haven't read Silo and I won't until the show is over. One of the few shows I don't want spoiled.

A point that sticks in my brain is: Where are all the bodies of those who have gone out to clean gotten off to? The views of the outside don't seem to show any bodies. Another thing is if the silo is hundreds of years old the cemeteries are likely to have gotten very overcrowded.

I thought they showed them planting people in the farming levels. If you did that you would just basically be recycled.

Second season is currently releasing weekly. Up to ep 3 now. The series has some changes, some good some I'm not sure about yet, written with help from Hugh Howey. I've read the books. Because of these changes there's surprises even for book readers. The series feels a bit slower than the books but is tense enough. It's up to the last third of the first book now. It's really cool seeing the silo brought to the screen. As a book reader you're gonna be frustrated from time to time.

Or, instead of an experiment and given that the human race is nearly extinct probably due to their own stupidity, the Founders wanted to ensure the survivors in the Silos continued to survive at any cost. Limiting the occupants to their own work, with very limited movement, prevents rampant growth beyond the means of the silo. Whether it's right or wrong wouldn't come into it, it may have been the best of a list of bad options
