I've seen all three bodybuilders live in the 70s and 80s. Mentzer was the best when seen live with Robbie a close 2nd. Mentzer was much more complete than Robbie ever was. Platz was too bottom heavy for my liking. Photos do not give you a fair comparison on some of these Body builders. Mentzer was extremely thick in person and his photos never did him justice.

Can’t say I saw him live but I agree . Almost perfect thick aesthetic. I mean his did get a perfect score . 78 universe . He was very powerful looking posed well wasn’t a bad looking guy . wide lats particularly adept at overhead poses and could hit an unbelievable vacuum .

You were wrong to use Mike's photo from Mr. Olympia from 1980, he was super defined, but his pecs looked flat. In fact in many photos before that race they appeared full and thick. Mike's triceps and forearms were, along with Oliva's, the best around in racing back then.

First of all, Robby smokes them all. If you ever saw him in the gym, when he trained a body part every muscle moved and popped. That’s the difference, the muscles were defined and separated. In his prime, his upper body was one of the best. He had good legs, but they didn’t have the same look as his upper body. Tom Platz was always a best legs winner, but his upper body was small. It wasn’t till the universe in Acapulco (I believe) that he somehow got big arms. Yes, when he was on the “juice” his jaw really stood out. When I saw him in Gold’s, he was doing some ab work and I couldn’t believe it was him, he was so short. Now Mentzer, he had the beef but no pop. He didn’t really have the separation that the top bodybuilders had at that time. Remember, Kal kicked his butt in the Universe.

Mentzer told the world of bodybuilding that his pecs would never grow to Arnold size. If only his pecs were like his forearms and calves he'd have no rival. Robby Robinson had weak calves and Tom Platz had a lower body, which overshadowed his upper body. Like I've said before Padilla was the most complete, but sadly too short for the judges. Sergio Oliva could have been the greatest, but his conditioning always kept him too smooth (he could have won the 1972 Olympia).

I’m not a bodybuilding expert, but I’ve always thought Mentzer was overrated. Some people swear that he’s one of the best over but I just don’t see it. I’ve never seen one photo of him dominating a bodybuilding lineup and all these people say how he should have won the 1980, but even if he did, he would have barely beat Arnold who barely trained for the Olympia and one of the weakest Olympia lineups ever. A lot of greats were in that show, but none were at their peaks. IMO

I don't know...after looking at some more of "heavy duty" Mr. Mike Mentzer's pics and video poses, he doesn't seem quite super muscular as the other top notched bodybuilders such as Arnold, Tom, and Lou back in the days...he kinda looks more of an Aesthetic type similar to The Great Steve Reeves and the fabulous Frank Zane with a little more bulk..!!!

He did get robbed in 1981. He arguably beat Dickerson, and clearly beat Franco. Franco had terrible gyno and watery legs. I read somewhere that Arnold was seated behind the judges talking up Franco during the final pose downs. Who knows.

Platz was just , like he had body parts from different men , all photo shopped in before photo shopping became possible, the cohesiveness was missing, Padilla was, look up his pics on web and wow , nothing stands out , everything symmetrical , nothing to out of balance. Robbie was my favorite as well , massive sized arms , softball biceps , beautiful torso shape , slight legs . Swartz with the giant arms & balloon pecs , Padilla small but, by himself looks like a giant ... Franco with better legs , speaking of , Franco so strong, huge torso , where his arms & legs didn't need to do any of the lifting , kinda showed . Old school , trail blazers all . One last thought, when we trained no one thought there would be more women in the gym one day then men , hahaha , much better scenery I have to admit with the ladies ...
