I also love the classic biopic of Mary Stuart "Mary of Scotland"(1936), starring Katharine Hepburn. Fredric March plays Lord Bothwell and Florence Eldridge as Queen Elizabeth. Ian Keith portrays Mary's halfbrother, James Stewart, the Earl of Moray. Not to mention, this classic was helmed by the legendary John Ford. The film depicts a fictional confrontation between the two Queens. I love that scene!

Thanks Simon and Co! I never tire of this era in history. How can you? It has all the key components of great novels. Only, it's real. Yikes. When I was a little girl watching Disney, I'd think, it would be grand to be a princess! Boy, was I wrong. Royalty for women especially was anything but romantic and wonderful. It was tragic and lonely. Painful. Deadly. As a mother, I can not fathom not seeing my child. I can't imagine the pain of having that child so turned against you, he would join your enemies. Now that I know more, I think if I just had to go back in time, I'd settle for the life of...a dead person. They seemed to be peaceful.

James didn't turn against Mary. He had no feelings for her, he didn't know her. And yes, queens consorts were only baby machines. That's why so many royal couples didn't have heirs. It was incredible stressful.

It’s not like James was resented in England, when Elizabeth I was clearly nearing the end of her life, and hadn’t named a successor, the English lords at court did all they could to keep relations between England and James on good terms. He was being seen as the clear successor to Elizabeth as, although there were others of Tudor descent too, James was a king and already had heirs that would mean a secure succession after him, unlike the trouble they’d gone through since Edward VI died. Plus, as it’s been mentioned, he was a Protestant, which would not have made Mary or any of her supporters happy as they wanted to return the English monarchy back to Catholicism.

green grey, I certainly agree! Mary Stuart won the "Game of Thrones". With Elizabeth's death, the Tudor line is extinguished. Mary had an heir and that makes her more accomplished than Elizabeth. A son is a son even if James isn't fond of her mother.
@shivill2236
@shivill2236 2 жыл бұрын
@@armandotalampas4800 I wouldn't call that winning as Elizabeth didn't really care about the Tudor line and some reports suggest that she was fine with James becoming king. The whole goal Mary had was to be Queen, the fact that she died before that shows she lost. Her son becoming king doesn't change that as he held fundamentally different opinions from her and some research saying he was happy she was killed. Calling that winning is just sad.

Future Video suggestion - Eamon DeValera (1882-1975) - prominent political leader in 20th century Ireland who, after the Irish war of independence from 1919 to 1921, was in the public eye for over forty years from 1922 until his death were he served as head of government (Taoiseach) and head of state (president). He was nearly executed in the Easter Rising in 1916 and was key in putting into place the new constitution on 1937. A very prominent figure in Irish history.

Like Dr. Albert Schweitzer, a humanitarian and philosopher who tended to the sick in Africa before being deported back to Europe as a prisoner of war because of his German background. Or Gen. John “Black Jack” Pershing, an accomplished soldier who played a key role in a majority of US conflicts in the late 19th and early 20th century, from commanding buffalo soldiers in the Spanish American War to leading the punitive expedition to capture Pancho Villa in Mexico, to leading the American Expeditionary Forces in WWI.

A fact: Elizabeth actually changed her mind about having Mary killed, but it was sadly to late the execution had already happened. Elizabeth was adamant for a long time about having her cousin and fellow Queen executed, even though neither one actually met in real life, they wrote to one another very often. It's a shame that the world pushed Mary to be the way she was, trying to be Queen of both England and Scotland. She probably just wanted to rule Scotland in peace.

The death of her father when she was only days old, the death of her first husband (for whom she held great affection if not love), the hostility of the Scottish people towards her upon her return from France, two horrendous subsequent husbands and then being executed by your own cousin. May she finally have found peace..

@@lilymarinovic1644 Mary and her husband Henry were from the same house but two different branches of it, similar in some ways to the Lancaster and York Branches of the Plantagenet's. So, Mary Queen of Scots was the last monarch of the Stewart branch and her son would be the first monarch from the Stuart branch. On the surface Mary married out of love, but I think she was also looking to increase any children with Henry's claim to the English crown with more Tudor blood.

Mary marrying Henry against Elizabeth’s approval was her first mistake. Yes, she was a Queen of her own right of her own country but a country right next to a hostile England who had already invaded Scotland plenty of times by this point. Her trying to strength her claims to the English crown while simultaneously trying to befriend Elizabeth was a big no no, especially with Elizabeth being a Virgo
