I also love the classic biopic of Mary Stuart "Mary of Scotland"(1936), starring Katharine Hepburn. Fredric March plays Lord Bothwell and Florence Eldridge as Queen Elizabeth. Ian Keith portrays Mary's halfbrother, James Stewart, the Earl of Moray. Not to mention, this classic was helmed by the legendary John Ford. The film depicts a fictional confrontation between the two Queens. I love that scene!

Thanks Simon and Co! I never tire of this era in history. How can you? It has all the key components of great novels. Only, it's real. Yikes. When I was a little girl watching Disney, I'd think, it would be grand to be a princess! Boy, was I wrong. Royalty for women especially was anything but romantic and wonderful. It was tragic and lonely. Painful. Deadly. As a mother, I can not fathom not seeing my child. I can't imagine the pain of having that child so turned against you, he would join your enemies. Now that I know more, I think if I just had to go back in time, I'd settle for the life of...a dead person. They seemed to be peaceful.

James didn't turn against Mary. He had no feelings for her, he didn't know her. And yes, queens consorts were only baby machines. That's why so many royal couples didn't have heirs. It was incredible stressful.

It’s not like James was resented in England, when Elizabeth I was clearly nearing the end of her life, and hadn’t named a successor, the English lords at court did all they could to keep relations between England and James on good terms. He was being seen as the clear successor to Elizabeth as, although there were others of Tudor descent too, James was a king and already had heirs that would mean a secure succession after him, unlike the trouble they’d gone through since Edward VI died. Plus, as it’s been mentioned, he was a Protestant, which would not have made Mary or any of her supporters happy as they wanted to return the English monarchy back to Catholicism.

@armandotalampas48002 жыл бұрын
green grey, I certainly agree! Mary Stuart won the "Game of Thrones". With Elizabeth's death, the Tudor line is extinguished. Mary had an heir and that makes her more accomplished than Elizabeth. A son is a son even if James isn't fond of her mother.
@shivill22362 жыл бұрын
@@armandotalampas4800 I wouldn't call that winning as Elizabeth didn't really care about the Tudor line and some reports suggest that she was fine with James becoming king. The whole goal Mary had was to be Queen, the fact that she died before that shows she lost. Her son becoming king doesn't change that as he held fundamentally different opinions from her and some research saying he was happy she was killed. Calling that winning is just sad.

A fact: Elizabeth actually changed her mind about having Mary killed, but it was sadly to late the execution had already happened. Elizabeth was adamant for a long time about having her cousin and fellow Queen executed, even though neither one actually met in real life, they wrote to one another very often. It's a shame that the world pushed Mary to be the way she was, trying to be Queen of both England and Scotland. She probably just wanted to rule Scotland in peace.
