Great memories for me as we lived overlooking platform 6 in Mordern House, also my dad was a driver out of Marylebone until he retired in the mid 80’s. He also drove the steam specials out of there in the 80’s.

My first experience on that train was as a young kid living in South Ruislip, decided one day after school to go to High Wycombe. station master at High Wycombe came to me asking questions and wanted to see my ticket which I didn't have! took me in the office and demanded my phone number etc, so yeah was put back on the train that was stopping at West Ruislip to be greeted by my angry father! Nice little adventure

I can clearly remember the goods yard being bombed, I was with my grandfather early in the morning, I was only six years old and the whole of the Lisson grove side of the goods yard was lit up a big glowing red all the length of the goods yard. Many windows in Wharncliffe Gardens were blown out. Later after a few years I went to St Pauls School in Broadley Terrace, the school playground had previously been part of Marylebone station land. On leaving school every day I used to rush over Rossmore bridge and sit up on the stone wall at the top of Boston Place just in time to see the Master Cutler leaving. Great memories.

Used to visit our grandmother in Boston Place in the 1960s. I can remember walking past the entrance to the goods yard in Lisson Grove still damaged from the war.

Now thats what you call a very good generous service! Yer average DMU made up of four carriages, or even eight carriages! These days, we travel like packed sardines on stupid two carriage Sprinters! Rotten two carriage era since 1987!
@CitytransportInfoplus4 жыл бұрын
this was filmed in the evening rush hours I think that for these trains they only ever came as 4 carriage sets - nowadays some trains can be as short as just a single carriage!

well I read his comments and saw that they brought back happy childhood memories. I filmed this as I realised that in later years the film would be of historical interest. I do not 'love' ancient Roman remains, but still see how they can be of historical interest. Simon

Yes, there's a 3-car set at the Barry Island Railway Centre and, I do believe there is another set on the West Somerset Railway. There might also be other surviving Class 115 cars still around but I'm not sure where these are.
@CitytransportInfoplus18 жыл бұрын
one of my other videos has some footage inside a class 115 DMU. I think its 'South of Wembley Park' As far as I can recall there is nothing else from Marylebone or inside a 115 - but in addition to the several films already here (from Harrow O T Hill) which show 115's I also have some footage from at least one more station. (Preston Road, I think). I have quite a bit more London / other cities footage to come, but time and hard disk space are the biggest constraints.

The 1972 mk2 is still serving the Bakerloo line today with a few ex Northern line mk1 units converted to driver only working and refurbished to Mk2 standard.
@chris-io1ki3 жыл бұрын
The Chiltern line suffered poor reliability with the aging units resorting to a motley selection of sets being drafted in. Also a couple of loco hauled services ran out of Marylebone. The first time I visited Marylebone most DMUs were still BR blue and non gangwayed. Visited the old depot too. Had to sneak through a dairy to get to it lol. Great days.

Wait, did the date on the video cam say 6 AUGUST 1990? I was only like five years old then, how I wished I'd been born much earlier to have been able to see all this with my own eyes!
@gainsbourg6614 жыл бұрын
The slam door DMUs may have growled along with slow accelaration but they were so much better in every other respect. Much better ventilated in summer , the seats were twice as comfortable, there was more foot space and a decent view from most seats . Also there was none of that ridiculous fashion for tinted glass that makes everything outside look gloomy. In fact all coaching stock these days is plastic rubbish by comparison - no wonder people pay £250 or more to ride in Pullman coaches.

@Thomas8288 жыл бұрын
The first time I travelled on this line was in 1990 on a return trip from Marylebone to Wendover and I remember being not overly impressed with the trains. These DMUs were some thirty years old, noisy, draughty and smokey. They were really like HGVs on rails. Things have certainly changed for the better for the Chiltern line since those days.

@radioianj You may have seen one of the 'Bubble' route-learning diesel cars, or possibly one of the now ceased Wrexham & Shropshire London - Wrexham trains that were formed of locomotive hauled Inter-City slam door stock.
@CitytransportInfoplus18 жыл бұрын
The master image of the videotape includes a short use of the 'date' facility. So I can be confident that I am correct when I say 6th August 1990. The media made much hype about the new platforms 5+6, yet seem to forget that there were more than just 4 platforms until the station was erm 'modernised' shortly before railway privatisation.
@trakmac18 жыл бұрын
The Leyland/Albion engine sound on those 115's reminds me of the old Swindon Class 123 'Inter-City' DMUs which, alas, are now but a memory!
@CitytransportInfoplus16 жыл бұрын
It is old - I filmed this just before the station was 'modernised' and some platforms plus a train shed roof were removed (most of what I filmed was later removed, as what was kept was being refurbished). As time has shown, that typical govt. inspired BR penny pinching was a mistake, as nowadays this is a busy station with InterCity trains again AND to cope with the number of trains coming here they even had to build more platforms... Simon

I lived in High Wycombe in the 1970s and the journey to Marylebone was so dull and slow, although the units were all blue then. 45 minutes for a semi-fast, but nearer an hour if it stopped at all stations such as Wembley Hill and Denham Golf Club. We would try our best to catch a Birmingham service from Paddington, just to avoid this line - that is until the Brum trains were diverted via Reading. Happy days? Maybe not.
@john8701314 жыл бұрын
@radioianj You may have seen one of the Chiltern Railways operated commuter trains, or you may have seen one of the now sadly ceased WSMR London-Wrexham trains, both would have been slam-door Inter-City stock hauled by a diesel loco (class 67). If it was a diesel unit that you saw, chances are it was one of the route-learning 'bubble' cars, or possibly you saw the Aylesbury - Princes Risborough shuttle train that is also formed of a 'bubble unit.

I must be older than everyone else on here because I travelled with St Marylebone Grammar School to our Sudbury sports ground each week on this line from 1952 to 1957. With all those muddy rugby boots, it must have taken hours to clean up. Not that the carriages were that clean to start with.

yeah l know marylebone always had six platforms even in the great central days so whats new? typical government hype as usual
@CitytransportInfoplus9 жыл бұрын
+chrisg1947 at railway privatisation it went down to four platforms, then because of the number of trains being operated two platforms had to be reinstated, but this was only partly possible because the government had sold off some of the lad that had been used by the removed platforms
@srfurley8 жыл бұрын
It did not always have six platforms, it only had four. 1 was where it is now, 2 was what is now 4, and 3 and 4 were where 5 and 6 are now, but all four platforms had their buffer stops in the same place. There was land for additional platforms, but these were never built; there was a small yard for staff and an office building was later built on the land where the extra platforms would have been. the island platform between 1 and 2, now 1 and 4, was very wide, with a cab road running down it. two new tracks were inserted, the new 2 and 3, down what was the centre of this platform, and 2,3,4 re-numbered 4,5,6, so the station briefly had six platforms. From the announcement this film must have been shot during that brief period, Platforms 5 and six were soon closed and demolished. Melbury House was also demolished, and replaced by a much larger building. Sidings were provided on the site of the outer ends of platforms 5 and 6. Finally, the sidings were abolished, and platforms 5 and 6 re-built, but much shorter due to the new building now on the site of the London ends of them, and platform 4 shortened to provide passenger access to them. The stabling siding alongside the track for platform 1 was always there. Just outside the station there was a turntable on the left, and the old Diesel depot on the right where the flats are now.
@ZeldaFitz7 жыл бұрын
Stephen Furley spot on with the history of the platforms. Yes there was a short period when the platforms were numbered 1-6. This was around 1990. However the 6 platforms at that time were never all in use at the same time.
