Looks great! Quick tip: See how the hinges are cut at an angle on that gate? You have to lift up as you swing it to get it all the way open. Good luck!

Hi Mary... Already it's obvious that you have an outstanding vlog. Love the way you stop to soak in the beauty and features of the trail instead of blasting through like a race horse with blinders on, not seeing anything around him because his only focus is what's ahead. In the grid we're always living in the past or the future, with little time to be in the present. Continue to let the trail bring you into places of solitude where you can find the magic of living in present tense, where personal growth and change occur.

OK, Mary! You win the PCT SWEEPSTAKES FOR ORIGINALITY. I've never seen anyone, "take a stroll" and do Yoga after getting to Hauser Creek on their way to Lake Morena. Crying like a baby, sweating, huffing, puffing, horizontal in their tents, too exhausted to eat.... Yes. You are a gem.

You have the right attitude. Its not the miles that are important, it's the experience, notably an enjoyable one.As one who has trekked many miles on the trail and has seen countless PCT blogs I can tell you your are doing it the currect way.I can't tell how many PCT videos I've seen where its all about the miles. ( I need to get to point A by 5pm or I need to do 21 miles today.If you are in such a hurry then why not take a bloody freeway? Then their blogs are all about how miserable they are.( I have 5 blisters here and my back is killing me.).Seldom do they mention the beauty and the majesty of the land they are traversing. Keep up that attitude that it's the experience and the final goal that's important and you will walk with a much greater reward at the end.

Look at the expressions of joy on Mary's face so early in her journey. Year after year so many people don't know how to open the gates , as with most of them, you lift up the right side and swing open same to close and many more to come. As for the Manzanita trees don't get them confused with a Pacific Madrone . Manzanita tends to be bushy and grow in the chaparral and the Madrone tend to be more like trees and grow up to 100 feet and wider at the base and are in more forest areas.
@memathews5 жыл бұрын

What a breath of fresh air you are, I only hope you can maintain this demeanor throughout your trek. There was a fire through there several years ago, you will be going through lots of burn areas over the next 5 - 6 months. Trail maintenance folks that belong to the PCT Association do their best to maintain the trails, but as there are so many miles of them you will run across areas where they have not been able to get to yet, this year the Mission Creek area is particularly bad due to all of the rains. Lift up as you pull or push on that type of gate, your tree is the Manzanita. You are right, hike your on hike and embrace the suck. SAFE HIKING.

It would be interesting to hear you describe Southern California flora (land, earth, dirt, air, plants) compared to the UK flora (yes, I realize that sounds like a wierd question). What does it smell like to you? What's the water taste like? Is the air heavy, lighter, dry? Does the earth feel different between your fingers? Or, is it all the same? How is the North American food you bought? I live in San Diego and it would be darn interesting to hear how you interpret San Diego nature vs. U.K.

A wonderful journey. I must disagree with all who tell you that the "tree" is Manzanita. From your video it is a Madrone. It has a trunk and is a tree, the leaves are oblate and not clustered and rounded. While manzanita can have smooth red bark, with thick stems it is a bush branching from the ground in most cases. Enjoy yourself and I will follow each post.

Question from a fellow brit, how are you finding the heat so far?
@MarysOutdoorAdventures5 жыл бұрын
It took a while to get used to, the umbrella certainly helps!! The nights so far are so cold though, it’s weird as you can never really acclimatise!

@@MarysOutdoorAdventures we will look into getting our umbrellas. Never thought about using them to keep the heat off.

many of those who are pushing to make miles are going to be those who are off the trail in a few weeks with injuries, take it easy the first week or so.

Totally agree, I’ve passed a lot of people injured now!

You're so cute and happy. It's refreshing! I think the sign was telling u to watch out for rattlesnakes. Q: Do you hangar bear bag or not yet? John from MI

Thank you! No need to hang bear bags in this section yet, I’ll let you know when I do 😁

I want to say that tree is an older ironwood tree, but I could be wrong.

These are the purple barked trees you marveled at earlier. Burned out manzanitas from fire. You will see many more.

Manzanita. It means little apples. Those are the trees. In the 60's people used to cut them off and take them home. Sand and varnish them. Now it's illegal. Good thing. The gates are for cows. We have the happiest cows in California and therefore the best cheese. We like the cows to stay in their territories. Lift up on the gate and then push or pull.
