Energy is definitely a critical issue for new smart cities. Masdar and its energy system might be not perfect as it is now, but it really is a source of inspiration for planning projects in the future. Wish that people realize that we need much more cities like this, everywhere.

Hi Robert totally loved your upload on masdar city,I was privileged to be involved on the construction of the erection of the timber framed roof on the library. The glulam timber was sourced from France from sustainable forests and engineered by terrells .This was all done in 2009 , im going back to to the uae this year and definitely going back to masdar to see this beautiful city take care ❤

I think you'll find that there's plenty of people in all countries who realise - but it's incredible that the right people have had the right influence and power to get this moving with Masdar. But hopefully the right people are pooling the lessons from around the world and as we move forward these technologies will be part of how new constructions are done and older places renovated.

Oh, I caught it about a year ago and I remembered that they focused on the underground autopilot cars, but you looked at far more interesting technologies - different ways of heating water and generating more electricity than needed, and you both looked at how they keep the city cooler - thus negating the need for air-conditioning in all their hotels. How do you keep the panels clear of sand in a desert environment? I was in Oman in 2003 and no matter where you are, even an air conditioned office, fine layers of sand get everywhere. It gets in your keyboard, on your screen, everywhere.

Its also nice that they've taken the initiative to fund a project like this. Even though we're working with them in regards to research... I can't help but feel that we, the United States, should've taken a much greater role in the renewable energy department. We haven't been doing enough to see how to reduce energy use in our existing cities, and fusion energy on a commercial scale is, at least for now, 20-40 years away... We should really do a lot more in regards to renewable energy...

The Sunflower is something like that, it consists of rows of quadrangular lenses each of which concentrates light on a small photovoltaic circuit. It has the drawback of not working well (or at all) when the sky is cloudy, unlike traditional panels, but for places like Dubai that wouldn't seem to be much of a problem.

I'm glad they're taking their time with Masdar City. So many new discoveries are being made, ESPECIALLY in the area of renewable energy that many of the things they're doing on that scale would become obsolete if they didn't. Fortunately its one of their priorities (I believe) to integrate and test new renewable energy methods... This is good, once again, due to the enormous amount of discoveries being made... One need only go to science daily, pop sci, extreme tech, or physics world to see.

I would also move the solar panels out in the desert away from the city because they get very hot. only about 17% is moved away as electricity, the rest is a near black surface that soaks up all the solar heat. move them away, maybe even cool them with ocean water because they are more effective when not very hot.

They said that examplewise British Petrol have not increased their oil production over the last 1-2 years and this could be a strong indication of Oil Peak or very close to it. I like the idea of building tightly but I would take that idea further and build one combined roof that has mirror coating. 1% transparent over the passages so you can perceive daylight but at a level comfortable to the eyes and with no significant radiated energy. then I would use ocean water to limit temperatures if necessary. taking the solar heat out of abu dhabi can suddenly make it very comfortable and they could prosper and grow. and it shouldn't be expensive to have metal foil roofs.

That's what the concentrated solar power arrays are, essentially. I think they're inactive in this video, they should be rotated 180 degrees, so they bounce the sunlight off the lower mirrors and onto the tube.
