Lyrically Big L is one of the best. But sadly he was too much in the streets and caught up in street nonsense with his brother that stalled his career and lost his life. Even the reason behind his shootting was allegedly just a retaliation from someone he robbed. Since then I figured Big L was telling the truth in his lyrics how he's "quick to twist your cap back for a fat stack". This Ma$e story confirms what i already thought. RIP BIG L. one of the best to do it. 🙏 🕊

Yeah, that's exactly what I thought as well. Always had the impression that Big L grew up in the streets, but wasn't actually out there getting caught up and instead used rap to vicariously describe the experience. To me, there was always this undertone that Big L was simply playing an exaggerated character, but was actually a pretty chill guy in real life. It's disappointing to learn that he really was a rather grimy individual. And it's not just this interview; recent revelations in general (like that NFL crew documentary) also corroborate that Big L was just a shady person.

you internet kids clearly don’t understand how the streets work. it isn’t personal. A wolf is a wolf. Plenty of times growing up people got robbed by dudes who knew them. Not everyone could rock a big chain or come through shinning. People are starving & if you look like a snack…..big L was cool with cam but obviously his brother wasn’t. Big L could’ve tolerated mase but never really liked him. Who knows. Big L was a skilled mc but didn’t have the commercial appeal of mase. Hip hop was going through a weird phase in 97 until dmx temporarily fixed it in 99. Mase was never better but commercially for that time mase was top tier & Big L was known underground but not on the mainstream. Even jay wasn’t top tier in 97/98. Some of you weren’t alive & definitely weren’t in the streets to understand what those days were like. Most of you wouldn’t have survived

@@russellcarter8709 & people forget what hip hop was sounding like in 97/98. It didn’t get back to street & grimey till dmx blew. a lot of people wasn’t around & don’t listen to hip hop to understand

@@jtonxbox1433 mase didn’t have to give anyone anything. Not a mase fan, I personally dislike mase. He put the entire harlem world on any mix tape & helped them to get deals. That’s what’s wrong with you kids, you want $ just because you know a dude & hung out with them. Mase tried to help them get deals which cam, cardan & mcgruff did & the rest mase signed as Harlem world with so so def. big L didn’t like mase & was hating plain & simple. Just because mase got signed he wasn’t supposed to give anyone anything. Did they write his raps? did they bring him to puff? nas & jay learned that lesson the hard way & eventually fell back. You lazy weirdos think you deserve something for nothing. loser like behavior
