That means that they cost a fraction of that to manufacture. Slap a magnet and a Microsoft logo onto it and suddenly it's worth £300? Are you INSANE? It's approximately half the amount that I paid for my smartphone!

Please do an in-depth analysis of the battery life, not video playback and other useless benchmarks. I’ve been waiting for WoA machines to release as I need to change my working (programming) laptop to a newer one with a hopefully considerably better battery life than x86 ones. This is all I want as well! I have a Surface Laptop 4 i7 / 16GB / 512GB and depending on usage get between 2-4 hours of battery life. The laptop is good, not great in terms of performance but battery life is atrocious and makes the overall experience bad.

As this week passes and more reviews are out, I’ll try to look into battery tests for software development, as different apps use different power. I couldn’t care less about video playback or Adobe suite as I want an ARM machine for my work and I hope it will last me a fair day’s work without thinking about the charger.

Dave is unstoppable today. 🔥 I paid full concentration on the video to convince me the laptop was worth the price. But I still couldn't find any. £440 for the keyboard and £1550 for the X Elite laptop is the art of mugging IMO. There could be at least one X Elite laptop with a touchscreen out there for less than £2000. Or I am broke.

@@MashITTech to be fair I just purchased an Asus rog flow z13 which has an i9 13th gen cpu and a 4060 gpu for £1,699 I haven’t tested it fully and I purchased it before the drama surrounding ASUs but even still Microsoft seem to be competing with Apple on prices because that is ridiculous and will put a fair amount of people off tbh. You guys are rapidly becoming my go to for laptop advice so thanks again for sharing 👍

Thanks for the quick review! I just got home with the Sapphire version of the Surface Pro. Best Buy didn't have the Flex keyboard in stock.. have to wait for shipping on it. But so far, everythings is running great. We are an Office 365 shop. Teams call was flawless, Zoom call was too. 1080p webcam looks great. Installing Adobe apps and Davinci Resolve now. So glad it has native ARM support for all the apps I use!

yeah I am about to start testing davinci as that is what we use, fingers crossed it runs as well as it does on apple silicon. Glad you are enjoying yours but sadly it seems the flex keyboard sold out very quickly after launch and are all on back order (we ordered within minutes of launch so got lucky)

Thanks for the content. I had a surface pro 9 on release and to be honest it did everything I asked of it even though it was just 8GB RAM. I am tempted to get another base model but snapdragon X Just for the improved battery life. I only do office work. Great / thorough review / analysis from you as always. I just went to the configuration site for the Surface, and you can get the non-wireless keyboard case for 170 dollars. so if you dont want the wireless feature or the pen, you can save some money there. but you can also get an amazing wireless mechanical keyboard for cheaper than that too

You're forgetting the keyboard has carbon fiber material for stiffness, a battery for when the keyboard is wireless. For these reasons, I believe the price ballooned.

OLED on a computer screen is a bad idea. All those static elements on the screen make for one awful case of burn-in in about a year's time. And in about a year's time, the dead pixels and bright pixels will come a knockin' - by the dozens. Yes, I said DOZENS. OLED screens are short-lived eye candy. They do have a place in the TV universe where pictures change often, and you sit many feet away from the screen. For computers, a good IPS panel beats OLED anytime.

Right now i see arm laptops as big hybrid tablets-phones-netbooks. The superiority is in camera and battery performance. Problem is that over half of desktop apps i use would be unusable . No speaking for games. As well as graphic cards and linux. They still need another 4 years and gpu integration in order to truly overtake the x86_64 architecture.

Many open source Linux apps can be recompiled for Linux on ARM, even by yourself. Unfortunately, my current daily driver distro just put on hold their ARM edition due to only having one burnt-out developer. Damn...

@@cameronbosch1213 i know that arm is possible in linux. Its just that customizing your linux distro it's a process that takes years ( my zsh file is 2500 lines long ) so i don't have the patience to try to fit it to arm. One thing is sure dxvk and emulators will need tome to adapt.

The only real downside to these Snapdragon based devices for programmers is the inability to run SQL Server. Where I used to be able to carry a single MacBook Pro to develop for all platforms (macOS, iOS, Windows, Linux, and Android), I now have to carry at least three.

This 512GB storage config is £2,000. The M4 iPad Pro 11” with the new Pro keyboard and Pencil Pro and the same storage is £1,650! Direct CPU comparisons are tricky & mostly not applicable but that’s a hefty value deficit to overcome. Thinking also about Windows 11 running on the Snapdragon Elite for the first time vs iPad OS on the M4 i.e. 4th gen Apple Silicon. Going to be interesting. Looking forward to your side by side comparisons. ☺️

Full Windows 11 (with Copilot+ if that's up to the hype) is just not comparable to iPadOS. The ability that Windows (or even macOS) has over the mobile OS is just staggering,. The M4 feels a bit odd to launch with, though the screen is lovely.

It all depends on the software. I don't think that Copilot is the killer feature that everybody needs. If those ARM machines don't fly off the shelves, it doesn't make any sense for software developers to put time and effort into an ARM version of their software, because there are vastly more x86 customers. It could be all a flash in the pan. We probably have to wait till the end of the year. It would make more sense for Linux, because thanks to Raspberry Pi there is already a lot of arm64 software.

Something is with your Surface, because it should have around 14,700points at geekbench 6. While Snapdragon X Plus has 13,000+ points. You should fully update it :) or maybe its really that inconsistent as some people say. But I really hate those rounded corners. It was really not necessary to make them rounded when it has the same formfactor as Surface Pro 8/9/10

Nothing wrong, most of these laptops are using the lowest end elite chips. This one is using 78-100 version clocked to only 3.4 ghz compared to others that are around 4k ghz

@@nikolajovanovic3647 From what I have seen the QC of the X-Elite chips have a large variance, so you could end up with a good one or a bad one. I wonder what the yield is and if the inconsistent quality was part of the reason for the long delay in getting these to market?

If this is an elite, then it's the mid tier elite chip, which has 4ghz turbo boost.

It's nothing bad, it has different versions and the X1E-80 and X1E-84 perform differently, it's 400Mhz diff in their base clock.. also data from Qualcomm made in isloated environment, in real time environment, when multiple other apps are also in use (since it's a multitasking device..), they also can limit the power consumption on each core, to keep the acceptable temp..

I totally agree and I did buy a base model surface laptop. I just wanted to try the OLED display with the SP11 as I have had the standard IPS display on surfaces for years. Selfish on my part I guess!

Tech reviewers have a responsibility towards the consumers. The best for a keyboard with a price exaggerated by the factor 20:is to not review it at all but just call the price. Same for batteries. Surface Pros have become a scam pricewise. --robert jasiek

I've just recieved my OLED and the screen looks horible, I can see what looks like screen door effect. Is mine faulty or are other people experiencing this? White and light greys looks pixelated with visible dots.

@@MashITTech much better than Asus. Having a nightmare presently with Asus UK RMA on tbe 2nd screen which failed on a 2024 Asus Zenbook Duo. They are trying to claim I damaged the bittom panel and this caused the OLED module to fail. Have yoj seen the recent content from Gamers Nexus? I trust MS ans Lenovo more. P.S. It was handed over in perfect condition!
