Since actual MacBooks have everything soldered to the motherboard, I’m thinking of getting this P1 Gen 7 but with OLED display, just because it has an DCI-P3 color space, also because these machines are easy to repair and upgrade, something that it’s almost impossible to do with the macs, and also the fact that almost all of their parts are “serialized” or “linked” to the motherboard, and its price, too. Macs nowadays are very expensive and hard to repair, while ThinkPads are still sort of “reliable and accessible” machines.

Hey @@mtbtrailshredder. Please accept my apologies for missing your initial question last week. I'm sorry about that. To answer the question, our touchpads do work on Linux, including the haptic feedback, but as of today, you can't adjust the settings directly within Linux. The good news that if you have Windows installed, you can change the settings there, and those settings will persist on the touchpad when you boot back up in Linux. That applies to haptic feedback intensity, touchpad click-force (how hard you have to press to register a click), and TrackPoint button click-force, and also whether the top zone works as TrackPoint buttons or a normal touchpad area. We are also working on a Linux control panel, though we can't provide a timetable on when that will be released yet. It's not fully in our hands, unfortunately.
@SenselInc2 ай бұрын
@@mtbtrailshredder But yeah, unfortunately if you uninstall Windows 11, then you can't adjust the settings. My suggestion for now would be to dial-in the settings you want first before uninstalling Windows. It's not a great solution, but it's a temporary workaround. As I mentioned in the other reply, we are working on a Linux control panel as well, which will be a much better solution of course.

Hello, Engineers fell on the head... Again ! A big no-go for me ! No physical buttons on the trackpad, just that, is a big problem. It's for a reason that the system has been abandonned ten years ago. An the way the keyboard is made, if it has to be replaced, you're good for a total disassembly of the machine. Again, been there, done that : replace a keyboard on, for example a W520 : 30 seconds. Replace a keyboard on a X250 : 15 minutes (assuming you know what you do). And a 6-row keyboard (with less keys than the old 7-row), without a numeric keypad, whereas there is all the place needed for it, not a good choice. A laptop isn't just what's under the hood. It's impressive on the paper, I'll not deny that, but in terms of ergonomics, there's not much thinking. This thing on the top of the screen... Not a big fan either. There is no logic : borderless screen (good) but no more space to put a webcam so there is this system. I would have preferred a little more borders. And it's not a thing that is a single piece with the rest of the chassis. Could be fragile. Again, this type of construction has been tested in the past (X200, X201, X220 for example and there are a lot of units where this additional part tends to break over time). The only positive thing I can think about that : it the user is not too nuts, he can use this as a lift to open the screen, which is nice because there won't be torsions of the screen on the long term as we can often see when it's lifted from the left or from the right. So possibly less damage on the long run on the screen (but not on the extension). Overall, gives me the impression that Thinkpads lose what makes them Thinkpads, more and more, year after year. For me, this machine is no more than a MacBook clone. :( W.

How do you think this would compare to the Thinkpad P16s Gen 3? Trying to compare the two.
@antonulybin3893 ай бұрын
Yeah, there are a lot of new pros and cons in the latest model. I'm sure that in a couple of years, the Gen 7 will become one of the least popular options for the P1. My recipe for the perfect future ThinkPad is: Chassis of the P1 Gen 7 but with physical trackpad buttons and upward-firing speakers (at least on par with the new Asus Zephyrus). Downward-firing speakers feel awkward when used on your lap or a soft surface. It would be amazing to have an option with the vintage 7-row keyboard with black and blue keycaps. The notch doesn’t bother me much-better this one than the atrocity Apple inflicted on their MacBooks. A Lunar Lake processor (or something better) for energy efficiency and quietness. RTX 5080 or 5090. Rumors suggest that the 5000 series will be much more energy efficient. Also, it's a cruel joke that the P1 Gen 7-a workstation-level machine-is limited to 8 GB of VRAM. If you're into Unreal Engine development, 3D rendering, or 4K gaming, that’s just not enough. It would be nice to have at least 16 GB of VRAM, if not more. CAMM2 RAM. USB-C charging so we can ditch the proprietary port and those ugly, huge power bricks. A card slot that can take a full SD card without it sticking out, and an Ethernet port-because why not? A vapor chamber for better cooling. PTM7950 (or something better) instead of liquid metal, which is awkward to work with and potentially harmful to the internals. Swappable Wi-Fi card and USB-C ports for better repairability. Two NVMe 2280 slots. It would be nice to have a WWAN card because it’s always better to have the option, but for me, it’s easier to use my phone's hotspot. I think all of this is completely doable, especially in a couple of years. It’s sad to see that today’s manufacturers aren’t chasing the best possible quality. They introduce new features one by one just so they can say, "Buy this year's model, it's better than last year’s; look, we added a new feature," like CAMM2. Since we’re dreaming, it would be fantastic to have a workstation-level laptop with passive cooling. I’d love to safely use my laptop in bed and forget about cleaning out the dust-but that might be hard to achieve in the near future.

The new Dell XPS touchpad is one of the worst I have ever used. Apple is still king in that regard. I hope Lenovo is closer to Apple than Dell in this regard, but I'm not a fan of removing the trackpoint buttons...

are you talking abnout the new XPS haptic touchpad? What did you not like about it? I thought it was OK but hate the invisible border, if you are going to make it invisible use the whole base :)
@cameronbosch12133 ай бұрын
@MashITTech Both that invisible surface and that the haptic feedback wasn't very good. By default, it was too weak and no matter what haptic setting I changed it too, it felt unrealistic and poor. Meanwhile, Apple's MacBook haptic touchpads have been great since 2015.

totally agree. with regards to the feedback the lenovo is closer to XPS than MacBook! And you are right, apple have perfected the touchpad and do offer an incfedibly well rounded laptop

@@MashITTech Perhaps, but it's so limited in terms of hardware and software. SSD died? Junk the whole thing. Need to upgrade memory? LOL.

I will only buy the p1 if they allow us to charge it with usb c, that charger is too big to carry when on the move

The touchpad is still upside down. I don’t know why they placed it this way. The top buttons are not usable with one hand when using design software

WTF happened to the touchpad.? Migthy IBM Thinkpad turned into just another Apple copycat. Might as well buy Apple. That 16 inch M3 Macbook Pro enticing enough

@@MashITTech Funny. I find the windows os so old and inconsistent. It's like a beta version. We are in 2024 and we should demand something completely new and fresh from that multi trillion company.

It's the English UK keyboard layout. More functional and better overall ergonomics, IMO, but very ugly and asymmetric.

To be fair, Dell destroyed the XPS on its own simply by releasing it in its current form. 😂😂
