These two things that are impossible to know, are the basis for an indefinite "New Normal", because the fear of the worst is FOREVER. The harm of masks: we are seeing increased sinusitis, increased facial skin infections and abscesses, some requiring surgery, increased oral dental disease, and streptococcal and staphylococcal pneumonia, including mrsa. However, the asymptomatic percentage varies with the population, regardless of masking. The challenge is, the data shows the same infection curve whether the population masks, does not mask, whether they lockdown, or do not lockdown. As a veterinarian, I understand the innoculum theory, but you have not presented evidence that the masks mitigate in a way that presents a level that reduces the spread. Theory, not evidence. Studies on blood samples taken prior to the sars covid 2 outbreak are cross-reactive to the virus. So, there is probably a lot more prior exposure and immunity from previous corona viruses that already circulate in the population.

I would add that we should also be weighing the psychological harm it brings. Think about the effect on those who are depressed, anxious, feeling isolated, perhaps having claustrophobia, etc. What about the harm to those who are hard of hearing and rely on seeing people's faces to help them communicate? And I don't even want to think about the stress it causes to the very young, babies and toddlers, to have to interact with strangers with masks on. Bottom line is that I think we should let people assess the risk for themselves and make their own choices in the matter.
@dsb45444 жыл бұрын
She says if you have a problem with masks, just don't wear one, that's okay. She also said wear whatever is comfortable, any kind of cloth mask. It doesn't have to be the ultimate, or tight or suffocating; its just something that will reduce your exposure. She doesn't advocate mask mandates, just encouraging mask use. Her theory is that if you do get exposed to COVID, you will have less exposure, albeit some, and that might lead to you have a mild/asymptomatic case which will the drive an immune response, protecting you from worse illness down the road. Doing it the way she proposes is pretty easy, with little downside, and it could help, but if it turns out it doesn't, it really wasn't that inconvenient, so why not? But again, if you feel strongly, no problem, just skip it.

As soon as weather permitted some daycares started to spend most of the time outside. When schools re-opened in spring, using outdoor settings was a part of many schools plans on how to minimize risk. Cycling is up (the city of Helsinki installed loads of cycling parking racks in the spring - not quite as good as the French bicycle-service voucher, but still something) Choirs and dance groups and all kinds of hobbies have moved outdoors, and we'll try to continue that as much as possible.

I have a question, Doctors. From this talk and some research, it’s suggested that smaller amount of viral load produces an infection that is less severe, often asymptotic. Makes sense. The viral load is therefore much less in asymptotic people. Why not just suggest masks for anyone with symptoms and allow everyone else to make their own decision if they want to mask? Much of past literature suggests only masking sick patients. And a follow up, why would we want masks on kids? They don’t seem to get symptoms and, although you keep saying there’s no harm in masks, I disagree when it comes to kids. It effects their social, emotional and intellectual development.

I really appreciate this video/conversation. I've been confused by the mask messaging and totally turned off by the "mask-nazi-esque" attacks and politicization of this whole thing. I've known the illness was real, but the hyperbolic approach by some to try to force folks to wear masks has done more damage than good. We NEED this information.
@donalddrysdale2464 жыл бұрын
I think your confused Kimberly, like most people---the only 'politicization' is coming from where it usualy does; the mainstream media and the technocrat cult behind it. the mainstream has been mind screwing people at least since the TV appeared in 1950, then, in the last 18, I-phones have been driving it in harder than ever. a man named David Icke who knows more about the American Gov and Monarchy on the outside of them, was banned from his You Tube channel back in March for supposedly spreading mis- information about 'covid'. they( the 'Bill Gates cult') wouldn't of done that to him if they weren't afraid of him exposing their agenda. obviously, people have been dying from a strain of whatever, but as usual, it is only killing those with pre-existing immune system problems, which is always the case with any strain there has been since WWI. INFORMATION is exactly the thing the cult behind mainstream uses to control perceptions--that's why it's so hard to trust anyone other than yourself; and anyone wise wouldn't much. where were the lock downs, masks, and hypochondria during the 2017 bird flu alone, that killed 500,000 world wide? hardly anyone mentioned it and life went on. I know it's a hard pill, but the bush line in the 'Gov' ARE Nazis, as well as the rest of their 'Rothschild Zionists' in their secret society--they assassinated JFK because he wanted to stop secret societies. the thing killing us far more than anything right now is denial. Icke has been trying to get through to people for 30 years that they are a beyond psychotic and mega-rich cult that has an agenda for us all, and he has over 20 books published about it. isn't it obvious Bill Gates is just waiting to stick a needle in our arms as well?

isn't the most important observation that only a certain percentage of the population die from ANY strain there has been? most people have healthy immune systems; if we didn't we would all be dying. 50 million died from swine flu during WWI, and that was the last time, because it was during the war and they didn't know nearly as much about vaccines. anyone that lived in a clean environment since birth will be shocked to death by someone that hasn't. that is why most of the N American indigenous population was wiped out; too much of a shock after thousands of years. I think people have lost much common sense from having the mainstream media being rammed into their ears with I--phones the last 18 years, and have been totally obsessed with them.

This is the most convincing argument for masks that I have heard. I'm not saying that I'm going to completely jump on the mask-train. I'll often wear masks when I know it would upset other people if I didn't (I just really don't want to start a fight on it). But this might convince me to actually give masks a second thought and potentially wear it slightly more often than I might have otherwise. I've never been a Covid-denier. I get it, this is a real disease. But I've kind of always thought from the beginning of all of this that it's been inevitable that I'm going to get the sickness at some point. If it's inevitable for me to get the sickness, why would I make my life suck in the meanwhile? Or so goes my logic. As far as not wanting to get other people sick, well, because my husband is an "essential worker" and there really isn't a feasible way for me or our children to quarantine ourselves from him, It's not like we were able to see any of our higher risk loved ones anyway. So, I kind of look at it as though I'm not actually putting anyone else at risk who wouldn't inevitably be getting it anyway. answer the most part I felt like I was around people who were generally healthy and would likely be asymptomatic or very mildly sick. I figured for all of us it was kind of one of those well let's me and everyone I'm around just go ahead and get sick and get this over with because it's inevitable that we are going to get sick. And hey, We might be part of the "sacrificial lambs" (and better us who'd have a slightly milder time of it then somebody who would die) that help bring us to herd immunity. Some people think that my behavior is careless almost as though I didn't believe the disease existed. No, it's rather that I think it's inevitable so I might as well enjoy life in the meantime.
@donalddrysdale2464 жыл бұрын
where were the lock downs , masks, and hypochondria in 2017 alone, when 500,000 people died world wide from bird flu? hardly anyone noticed it and life went on. there has got to be something wrong with people's eyes now Emily--all of a sudden eight months ago people are believing they are going to die everywhere if their not wearing masks, which only happened because of the mainstream media telling people as usual. just last year--same thing--100,000 died from TB; no one panicked. there is a strain of something almost every year these days. moreover, Isn't it kind of obvious that this strain of whatever must of been made in a China lab then set loose? then, all they had to do was use the mainstream. they are lying to people that don't understand that the people that have died from it are just those with pre--existing immune system problems, which is always the case. if that wasn't true, the death toll would be way higher. if you have a healthy normal immune system, then you don't need to worry about it because you will recover from whatever it is just like a common cold, in which it apparently isn't any more harmful then that if you have a normal immune. I have gotten sick before because the ignorant guy sitting across from me in a sauna didn't cover his month when he coughed; that's normal, it's not normal to be paranoid of killing someone for God sakes. your not responsible for someone else's health; just your own. this a fear mongering scam in which Bill Gates is very much a part of, just like 911 was an obvious scam. they are doing it because have an agenda for us all. there are people protesting this lunacy all over the world.

Answer is always even with a vaccine or it will be something else. Those who are not at risk need not wear a mask. We must expose ourselves to this virus or when we take them off old crap that we used to get will be more serious. We have inmune systems that adapt. But yet they both believe in herd and Tcell immunity. We probably already have 100 mil already exposed. Those most at risk need vaccine even if only 30% effective but still have a better chance of dying than younger healthy people otherwise probably. These people that get vaccine probably should continue to wear a mask forever?

@@marklopez4262 The point of the video is that even with the mask, you're still going to be exposed to the virus. Yes, older people are more susceptible to darn near anything. But Covid mostly hit those older people (and some staff) that were living in continuing care facilities. I live in Canada and the statistics are remarkably similar. 62% to 82% of the deaths were in these facilities. Facilities where often the people were living four to a bedroom (this shocked me). To compound matters, in these types of facilities, the residents are exposed continuously by various staff members in very close, intimate procedures over which the patient has almost no control. The resident also has no control over whether they get to wear a mask. As a compare and contrast, I live in a high rise apartment building with a wide range of ages but a high percentage of older folks (at age 67 I’m one of them by the way) because it’s the sort of place that people can live for decades and do. Some are quite frail but they get around. There are no cases in my block that I know of (and I know the managers well and know they are transparent). Now that we can wear masks (i.e., our health authority has graced us with their permission), we mostly wear masks in common settings. But even before masks our encounters were brief. We all have control over who comes into our living spaces. We all get to take as many precautions as we think wise now that we’re past the point of sealing ourselves up like anchorites. And I wear a mask in public, especially now that I believe that it might be difference between hospitalization and merely being ill at home. In sum, I wish the stats would differentiate between old people who live communally in care homes and the rest of us who lead relatively normal but careful lives - because we can.

Yes they are lumping everybody over 50 60 70 to be 'locked up' in their homes which is not logical. Plenty of older people are more healthier than some younger ones. It all depends on the immune system , on how strong it is, not the age of the person.
@Asptuber4 жыл бұрын
You have a good point. Last I looked at our stats (Finland) a little less than half of all our deaths were people in continuing care. BUT even if you subtract that, the deaths still do skew old. But I do agree that talking about "just old people" infuriates me, even though I have a good twenty years myself until I enter that bracket. The continued care thing is a real issue - but it is a *different* issue (and one that can be mitigated, but it takes a lot of thought, work and actually caring). Talk about "locking up" all the risk groups and letting everyone else live normally makes me so angry. What we don't need is fractioning society in this way. We can ALL make small adjustment to lower the risks. It isn't hard. Meet outdoors whenever you can. Meet in bigger spaces. Mask when you can't do that. Put potential superspreading events (festivals etc) on hold for a year. We don't need to shut everyone over 65 out of society. We can't do that. It is unhuman to do that.
@evebehr4 жыл бұрын
@@Asptuber Oh I know that the death statistics skew old. They do for most conditions and that holds for Covid also. However, I study Maths and Statistics through coursework and as a hobby. I have frequently felt frustrated in trying to find data that related to older people in the face of the huge confounding factor that most deaths have been in continuing care facilities and, of course, most of those people are old. Looking at Canadian numbers, only 7.1% (352,205) of people age 65 and over live in care facilities according to Statistics Canada (2011). If up 60 to 80% of all Covid fatalities for the *total* population occurred in that small segment of the population that is one heck of a confounding factor. (BTW, people 65 or over constitute about 15-16% of the total Canadian population.) I was trying to find an answer to the "how worried should I be?" question and the numbers I've been getting have not been helpful. I'm a 67 year old woman in reasonably good health all things considered and living independently. My sources indicate that it pays to be careful, that playing the delaying game pays off (treatments are better), wear a mask (it reduces severity), and accept that this is yet another thing that might catch me in the end but not the likeliest. And for whatever time I have left, I want to continue to work towards goals and enjoy myself. BTW, credit to ZDogg, I notice that in his next interview he changed his phrasing occasionally to "people in nursing homes" rather than simply "if you are older".
@Asptuber4 жыл бұрын
@@evebehr That statistic about percent of age groups in assisted living vs covid deaths is really eye-opening. Thank you. Makes me curious about what our figures here in Scandinavia would be - and given that we tend to want everyone to cope at home with help rather than move I wonder what the best way to calculate that would even be. Because an old frail person who needs help bathing and getting into and out of bed will in Sweden and Finland nowadays very often not live in a facility, but at home with up to 5x daily help. If you think about exposure, and the person's control of it, this type of set-up is really bad. (Though it can be mitigated, I was so happy when I heard that the organisation taking care of my father had rather quickly got in place plans for what to do if they got infections - cohorting both staff and clients.) I wish we would get better data on these things, and better presented.

I would like to ask 3 simple questions: 1) Covid-19 attacks the respiratory system. How can it be a good idea to wear a mask (and I see people wearing them when they're alone, in their cars, and even wearing 2 of them, etc..) that stops you from breathing correctly? Since when breathing in one's carbon dioxide is good for you? I always read that breathing in one's carbon dioxide can lead to hypercapnia which in the long run leads to respiratory acidosis, a pre-condition for some types of cancer. 2) Since children don't seem to be affected by Covid-19, why should they wear masks exactly? Is it a good idea for children to grow up, to be in school, etc.. surrounded by masked people? What does that do to children psychologically long-term? 3) Surgeons wear masks to protect patients on the operating table, but not for hours every day. If speaking in a normal tone of voice - i.e: without shouting - how much spit can you actually project onto others, considering that normally people speak to one another always from a distance and not a few inches away from each others' faces? I could go on along these lines, but I'd be grateful if first someone could answer these 3 questions. Thank you

I liked that message, but mostly because it cuts out all the fretting about fomites and touching your face and masks not being effective enough. For the same reason I really like the minimal innoculum-idea. I hope we get more compelling science on it, and people like the virologists at TWIW stop pooh-poohing the idea. In my daily life* the fretting about how protective masks are or not ("if it fogs your glasses it isn't tight enough") and the fear of fomites is what annoys me the most. I like my cloth masks for public transport, they go in my pocket, I don't worry about boiling them or other such magical rituals. But I am actually considering getting a visor. But only because I direct a moderately risk-prone group of folk dancers, and when we have to move our gatherings indoors I don't want to be the asymptomatic person who sprays 10+ people with virus. Talking over music means you have to be somewhat loud... loudness correlates with more droplets and more aerosol-size particles. Just a few days ago I heard some idiot talking about how visors without a mask aren't enough blabla. This kind of talk irritates me no end. The point would be that a visor is very helpful in a situation where you have to talk loudly, and people must be able to see your mouth. And no, doing dance practice via zoom is not an option. Why is risk-*reduction* such a hard concept for so many people? *I'm in Finland: things have been ok here so far, rather moderate "lock downs" (ie school and bar closures for 6-8 weeks in spring, recommendations against mass gatherings and for quarantining after travel to high-prevalence areas. Now we are quite up to speed on test-trace. I'd like to see more masks on public transport (it's about 20-40% only), but our incidence is still tolerable (still below 10/100k/2 weeks I think).

A 300 pound guy can probably drink more beer before feeling intoxicated than a 100 pound kid. So some people probably have more tolerance or are in better health to handle a larger dose of COVID-19. So, it stands to reason that the one size fits all of "everyone wear a mask" still doesn't apply. and that's what I argue for, is less government one size fits all mandates, reopen everything, and let people take their own risks or precautionary measures as they see fit. Since the number of critical care beds in our health system is limited, keeping the amount of CoVID19 cases requiring hospitalization as low as possible ought to be our goal. Efficient and timely access to an ER for anyone with a serious injury or acute health crisis (appendicitis et al) is essential, might we agree?

You are right. You cannot legislate health. Personal choice trumps "but it's infectious" fear and hysteria. A healthy body does not get sick. By eating crap food, drinking soda and energy drinks, smoking, couch-potatoing, an unhealthy body is created and along with a compromised immune system. But people make their choices and they are not fined or harrassed for them, yet masks suddenly require the enforcement by the state, and they don't work, despite this theory, which sounds ok but is unverified.

Good, though repetitious. I wish they'd discussed long-term effects (such as diminished lung function & neurological effects) experienced by those who are considered as having *recovered* from Covid19.

But were they asymptomatic or did they just have antibodies from already having the virus?

This is why good ventilation in enclosed spaces is crucial. In high enough concentrations virus aerosols (which build up over time in rooms without outside ventilation), can make you really sick by ending up directly into your lungs when you breathe in.

Can also use UV lamps in the area, while being out of room.
