Beautiful interview! Speaking of fear , poverty and health related issues, I once asked my grandmother how the depression affected her life. She told me that the depression was not as life-changing to her family and their rural southern community in the Mississippi Delta because they were very poor and lived off of the land. She said the flu epidemic of 1918 was the most life-changing event. She was only eight years old, but because of the devastating loss, she remembered it well.Their little community was hit hard. They could not bury the victims fast enough (her words). She lost two siblings and both parents (my great grandparents) Many children, including her, were orphaned. Eventually it became so deadly in their area that a mass grave was dug and many victims were buried together. In the 1980s, she and others who lived through this epidemic made a list of all the victims that they could remember buried in that grave behind their tiny clapboard church. A headstone with the names was finally placed at the grave in the 1990s. Even though she experienced all of this, my grandmother never lived in fear. She lived a life of love.

I'm sorry you feel that way. This is not any worse than the regular flu. This whole thing is blown out of proportions and planned carefully for people to act and react exactly the way you are and many others. This is the biggest hoax of our lifetime. Masks do more damage than help. When people fear they don't think rationality and they know that very well. That's their goal. I'm willing to be placed in a room with people with a virus and I guarantee you I won't get it and if I do I wouldn't even know. That's how mild it is in over 99.6% of cases. I have more fear of wearing a mask than the virus. The dangers virus you should worry about is the media like news, your TV etc, that's the real virus pushing the agenda. One more thing to think about: If the media didn't push this agenda 27/7 on all channels nobody would even know anything about the "virus". Think about that for a minute.

They only get to see us younger family members (in our 40's BTW) once a year and they were not going to take no as an answer. They talked about how their parents faced Spanish flu and they did not go this nuts with lockdowns etc. (their words not mine). They made it crystal clear that they fully understand the risks and that they are choosing to live life on their terms. Their feeling is that they only have a few years left, and they are going to spend as much time seeing their family and living life as fully as they can. I will grant them this...they are rather healthy for two people approaching 100. Its also fortunate that they live in a rural area.

You know, there actually are a good number of children thriving in remote schooling that were ignored academically before. My 8th grader has taken total control of his education and every one of his grades are 90 and above. He's learned to speak up for himself with his teachers which he was timid to do before. My 3rd grader is also learning to communicate with her teacher when there is an issue. Just today she was unable to get into a test she was required to take today and it was actually the teacher who insisted she was doing everything wrong. IT got involved and the teacher was the one instructing incorrectly. She's learning that people in power tend to insist they're always right even when proven wrong, a hard lesson for most of us to learn when the stakes are much higher than 3rd grade TAKKS tests. As for me, I've actually had MORE performing opportunities over Zoom than I've ever had. I've met people from all across the country that I wouldn't have been able to due to my own financial status and the fact that I can't take off to perform across the country because I don't have sitters available for my children. My husband is a trucker, it would be necessary. Not only has it opened up opportunities for my own performances, podcasts, and creative endeavors, but my husband has even started voiceover work on his own. People are having positive experiences with schools and Zoom throughout this. Creativity is abounding, attempting to help entertain and connect us all together. I think of all the options we have now and I wonder how our great grandparents fared during the OG flu pandemic. I'll bet their ghosts would be appalled that we're whining that Zoom is too impersonal compared to what they had to deal with.

I didn’t visit my mother since last year and when I picked her up I had a N95 and surgical mask on. In the ER I sat on her stretcher for over 8 hrs in a jumpsuit which I discarded when I left the ER later that night. My mother is no longer with us and now they want to wear a mask. SMH. This was late March early April when we were loosing 600 to 800 people per day. I even gave my mother a bed bath in a N95 mask and plastic gown before they told me no visitors. I took a test later that week and was negative. N95 worked for us. My husband wears a simple surgical mask when he commutes to and from work on the public bus. So far so good.

My youngest is virtual this school year, she started out in school and requested to go virtual. Their pediatrician recommended that both my girls be virtual due to my son's health but my older daughter needs the social interaction from her in school. My son is a senior this year, having missed lots of school due to being ill over the years but he is always online schooled with a tutor due to his health and low energy levels. It's not about fear of the virus is about taking appropriate measures to make it disappear from circulation, by sharing it we empower it (it mutates and adapts to survive in its environnement). And yes gatherings indoors at the moment is complete nonsense, we don't know how it will evolve, we don't know whether it will increase mortality for the years to come but we do know how to stop it, masks, tests and isolation of contagious ppl. Genuine question. If getting infected doesn’t provide sterilising immunity how does herd immunity stop COVID-19? @monykalynf36044 жыл бұрын
What virologists say vaccine or natural immunity won't stop spread?
@rwil69694 жыл бұрын
monykalyn f have been watching TWIV This Week in Virology. They speculate that a vaccine or natural immunity won’t be sterilising I.e. stop you getting or transmitting the virus SARS-COV2. It is likely to reduce or stop the impact to COVID-19 which is disease you get from the virus. The speculate that you can get immunity from getting COVID-19 i.e. stop the disease but still get the virus and pass it on. If this is the case they can indicate that we all will need to either get vaccinated or get and survive the disease (COVID-19) to build immunity so they disease itself will not have kill or negatively impact it. Again they speculate that even if you have got natural immunity by surviving the disease you could still get the virus, replicate it and pass it on. I have emailed them to see if they would explain this further as if true this would explain why a lot of medical experts don’t think herd immunity is a feasible way of stopping this virus and why masks may be very important by helping reduce the spread of the virus even if we have immunity against the disease. I could be completely wrong in my understanding of what they have speculated and they keep on qualifying there theories with there isn’t enough evidence either way.

Kind of unrelated to the video but I am asking people who have been diagnosed with Covid if this has been their experience because I think Covid might have been spreading significantly earlier than whats been said. So anyway, last October was the last time I got sick. It was a nasty illness that I just thought was a really bad cold but with different symptoms. Unlike any cold I've ever had before, I had lung pain with this one. This was also the first RESPIRATORY symptom. It was one of the few times that I was miserable enough to buy DayQuil. I've never been one to buy DayQuil lol I experienced headache and fatigue before the onset of my respiratory symptoms. I work at VZW and I worked at the store in Mequon, WI at the time...an affluent area with A LOT of international travel. Talking made me exhausted...like winded. Not severely...but enough to be miserable. I was sick for about 8 days and then Day 9 I felt fine and then on Day 10 I experienced intense nausea and chills. This lasted but improved over the next couple of days and by Day 14 for sure I was perfectly fine again. There was no pandemic at the time so I didn't pay attention to my temperature at any point during my illness. I wonder what the odds are that was Covid. It sure SOUNDS like it. Another thing...my best friend's sister had Covid and infected everybody except my best friend. I know that during the course of MY illness, I hung out with him, maybe even twice and I don't remember if he became sick himself. Remember that this was still the old normal where we lived our normal lives through sickness and toughed it out. Its just interesting that he was the one to not get infected when the whole rest of his family did and HE of course had close ties with ME. Thoughts? Has this been someone else's experience?

December it kicked into high gear though, no taste/smell, cough all the time, hurt to breathe etc, along with fatigue. when I finally went to Dr she said "immune system in overdrive" and gave me steroids to "calm it down". Finally started feeling better. Mild fever off/on. No one around me got that sick though, and since i work in healthcare would wear a mask at work (even if wasn't symptomatic that day-just as a precaution). Antibodies in June negative. Dr in the family (in another state) said he saw more severely ill with viruses in december this past year than several recent years combined. Maybe not this particular virus, but you gotta wonder if is enough to spark some immunity to SARS-Cov 2.

Our other states don’t recommend masks and essentially it’s up to you if you want to wear one. The thing that has massively reduced flu is hand hygiene, social distancing, working from home and the great percentage of people not using public transport. As soon as we mingle we are definitely getting colds and flus we are just not widely spreading it because we are not mingling to often. Self isolating when getting the mildest cold/flu symptoms has been super effective. I am supportive of mask usage but I don’t know about universal mask wearing

To cut a long story short the only thing I could change is the obesity.I went cold turkey and have no sugar and carbs. I feel amazing. I am stuck very worried about how I have made my immune system "unfit"through lack of exposure to the normal pathogens of everyday life. Where do I begin my immune fitness regime. I've noticed. and I have asked a similar question about restaurants several times now. Can't get an answer. But I really shouldn't be surprised. I haven't confirmed this yet, but I heard from my family earlier that apparently, Newsom just decided that to eat in a restaurant you have to put your mask on in between bites.
@BigIdeaSeeker4 жыл бұрын
Ellen Hunt Nonsense. I’ve eaten in numerous restaurants in different cities in CA. One wears a mask to the table and removed it upon sitting or ordering. Wearing a mask until one sits down makes perfect sense as one is moving through the restaurant. Yet people continue to ridicule this simple fundamental practice.
@ellenhunt87674 жыл бұрын
@@BigIdeaSeeker ....ok, but between bites? ya see the safetyism here...
@BigIdeaSeeker4 жыл бұрын
Ellen Hunt So I think the better way to put this is Newsom - or a staff member- off-handedly recommended wearing a mask between bites. There was never any CA mandate or demand to do so or statement that one *has to do so. Your family member either doesn’t understand or misled you.

It's about reducing the amount of viral load (the inoculum) that you receive. Increase the amount of time you are wearing the mask = lessens the viral load you receive. Simple. The theory is your case of covid will be less severe because your viral load is low. Keep your mask on as much as possible. Better yet, refuse the meal, keep your mask on, and reduce your exposure by about 50% while those around you eat.

Does being infected and asymptomatic mean that you can be a spreader and no know it? What time frame should one assume that they're potentially a carrier after testing positive and recovering? How long after infection would one become negative?
@danaorme78274 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you tested positive you can most assuredly be a spreader. Contact tracing is figuring out when you may have been exposed, then testing positive. You need to stay quarantined for at least 14 days from a positive test and while being asymptomatic. Talk to your Dr., do a telehealth appointment.
@thatswhatisaidCA4 жыл бұрын
I can answer #1. Yes, you can be a spreader without knowing it. (You can't say how long you're infectious if you don't know when you got it.)

I’m curious if “hospitalization rates” has a specific definition. If a person gets a little sick from covid and they go to the hospital, is that consider in the hospitalization rate? Hospitalization rate seems like it’s very serious, but some people go to the hospital any time they get sick.

I really love your intelligent guests and shows. And I would agree that living in fear and isolation is not healthy. On the other hand we just lost another friend to Covid-9 days ago. He reached hundreds of people with an on-line Kundalini yoga class that was offered for free to the public to (ironically) help others cope with Covid. He was previously healthy and 68 and followed safe practices. His loss devastated his community of family, friends and students. My husband (who has pre-existing conditions) and I are in the vulnerable age group (60 and above) We don’t want to live in fear either but we live in a RightWing “red” area that has -a majority of “anti-mask -it’s a hoax” citizens. We believe people need to work however not sure moving forward in a safe and sane way is possible without requiring masks. We are grateful for the businesses and medical facilities that require masks and don’t believe that 80% of the people in our area would choose to wear masks based on reason/concern alone. We often hear the opposite-hence the reason it has become politicized. The pressure to wear masks is not just coming from elitism. I was a teacher who worked with vulnerable populations. I believe in working together for public health and economic well-being. Thank you for your show.

I agree, this should be a discussion that plays out in data gathered. I don't think there is as much of a gap between the positions of Dr Gandhi and Michael Osterholm as is being presented. All are advocating the same basics - masks with distance. This is not living in fear but living with precautions. I would even add, if you live in a population that doesn't mask, adding basic eye protection should be considered as well.

Hey zdogg, at 16 minutes into the video, I think you are using an ad hominem with Dr Osterholm. Having a scientific opinion from an MD or PhD does not make it better or worse, just different. Dr Gandhi was very professional and gracious with her response not attacking anyone personally but pointing to her understanding of the epi. data.

I am no a doctor.... Nor do I play one on TV..... I don't even play one on KZbin! But what worries me about "making the choice" to be around the people that carry YOUR same level of caution is that it's GROSSLY UNFAIR TO THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY! If masses of people say they want to go to bars and sports and what not and "CHOOSE" not to wear a mask - they are likely to get sick and they WILL EXPECT to have the RIGHT to go to a hospital and wine to the professional there "Save me and make me well again." That person has chosen to put the lives of the medical professionals at RISK - to not only get sick by taking care of them, but the possibility that they may DIE taking care of those masses that "chose" not to wear a mask ! ! ! It's the absolute ultimate of selfishness.

So should Obese who eat poorly feel the same way? THEY are taking resources to take care of their heart attacks, blood pressure, and disability by not taking care of themselves? Be VERY careful with the virtue signaling and deciding WHO should get care based on lifestyle choices. VERY careful. Take a LONG look in the mirror and be honest on what YOU could be judged for.

Rapid tests are on the market to regular Joe’s now, but unfortunately they are still costly. If people could test themselves daily, they could take responsibility for their health and it would enable families and groups to gather and work without the fear and uncertainty of being exposed by asymptomatic carriers or those in the early infectious stages.

This video is excellent. What you both said in this video is perfect to review after a more recent video on Iceland where I commented on an appropriate comment that triggered me. I felt some nice intelligent people point a judgemental finger at certain cultures with high obesity and comorbidities. I asked if you DR ZDoggMD could please weigh in on the one-size-fits-all solution. People in some areas of the country are at a disadvantage for example in crowded environments with poor access to the healthiest support systems. Preaching at them to stop being obese is not going to help anyone. So, I rewatched this video 2 more times. I like your attitude.

I went into a chemist (pharmacy) and spoke to another couple. She was happy with his buying her perfume. I grinned at her saying she was a very lucky girl. Then I realised she couldn’t see my face because of the mask. She said “Oh I could tell by your eyes.” Funny that. She didn’t have a mask on. Can you please learn from the isolation that what it does to people to “save” them is what it does to those isolated by illness, disability, age and who knows what else. I noticed my usual groceries harder to get but my isolation is the same. But big deal. Who cares. I’m nearly 60 so why does my need to be useful, have enough to buy what I need, be able to get out and about, be useful, interact with people for more than buying an item or consulting medical professionals not be important to my mental and physical health. My world is so much smaller, long before covid. Obviously covid has a lot of work yet to be done on it and it’s a priority.

That thing about smiling while wearing a mask - I actually experienced this today. With a dog! I was waiting in line in my very small neighbourhood grocery store when a lady popped in with her dog (dogs not normally allowed, but other dog outside so for some reason she couldn't leave those two together) to just get some cigarettes. The dog was looking very discombobulated at being in such a weird (and forbidden!) environment, looking around curiously. So I smiled at it, totally forgetting that I was wearing a mask. And the dog looked back at me and cocked its head, just like dogs often do when you smile at them. So even dogs can tell a smile from behind a mask.
