On this job the Mason showed up without my knowing and just started laying his block right on the wet concrete.
I'm not sure why he couldn't wait a day, but he just went right ahead and started.
I had no knowledge of him showing up today, I thought I'd be there by myself finishing the concrete.
I think other sub-contractors should wait until you're done to start working right on your work. This was kind of impatient and selfish on his account.
I made it work. I had a job to do and was going to do the best I could even if I had to work around him.
Check out how he just went ahead and did his block laying even as I'm trying to power trowel the concrete.

Hi Mike, love your videos! I am a painting contractor and have to deal with dry time on a daily basis. I will never understand why other trades have little to no respect for others. I worked on new construction for years and always had issues with other trades just showing up to the jobsite because they had nowhere else to go that day. It got so bad, that I would always bring my lacquer clear coat to the job and when we saw someone show up, I'd run thru the house and mist the air. We would then wear our respirators, so, when the carpenter, plumber or electrician walked in, they got hit with that lacquer smell. They all said the same thing, are you gonna be spraying all day? Yes, I am!! They left, we opened the windows and went back to painting.

I used to do HVAC and later worked for a General Contractor. Doing HVAC, we used to work pretty well with other subs for the most part... although there was the occasional time when a plumber would rip out our duct work to run his plumbing. Nothing was on the blueprints, so it was often a free for all. It did suck when we had to cut all that pipe out to re-install our ductwork. :) Working for a GC was much better, as we knew that if we did sub something out, what the plan was overall. I was superintendent assistant working for a builder we used to do condos, apartment complexes and multifamily homes; at some point I was supervising all the punch out and finishing work for all trades between CO inspections in all stages of the build process and I do not remember seen something like this; probably because contractors knew all too well if they start earlier and mess up anything there would be a back-charge; I heard of those few times but never saw the ones who got them, ultimately it is not professional to start your run until the previous contractor is done and you get green light, unfortunately not everyone has good etics

It's typical in my Southwest region for block masons to set block on freshly poured footings and slabs that THEY Themselves have poured. But NEVER would a sub-block mason arrive and start setting block on someone else's fresh pour while they are still finishing it. It's one thing to let him unload his block with permission but never would it be appropriate for a sub to start laying block on someone else's pour while they're still finishing it. He would have been quickly run off our sites.

Speaking as a general contractor, I do my best to have subs who have worked together before and respect each other. I want everyone to work as a team and let me know if something fishy is going on and not just be concerned with their own trade. Not that I’m expecting them to do my job for me, but we all have each other’s backs. This guy put you in a difficult position and it wasn’t cool. Again, as a GC, if you were on my job I would have wanted you to ask him what’s up and if I knew what he was doing. I would have definitely asked you before hand if that was ok and if he worked for me he would certainly be expected to inform me prior to doing that. Even if it was ok, and as a GC I would absolutely defer to the concrete contractor on that, I wouldn’t have been happy about that. My opinion is just coming from the business relationship, jobsite harmony and communication angle. I have no opinion whether what he’s doing is ok from a building standpoint. I’m a GC and defer to the expertise of trusted subcontractors. Also, I live in earthquake country so that whole situation is something I just never see, no matter when the mason sets his blocks.

In my part of the country the foundation guy would have had to put in vertical reinforcing extending a couple of feet above the yet to be poured slab (or to the top of the block for this short wall). Mike would have had to finish around the reinforcing and the blocks would have horizontal reinforcing added as they are laid. Then the blocks would be poured solid and the anchor bolts installed. I would have told the mason to come back after he has had lunch. I think it would be impossible to damage the slab structurally by adding weight on the edges of the slab since the slab is fully supported by the foundation at the edges and thus the slab could not settle to impose stresses.

No harm, no foul. Under the sun and during warm season there won’t be anything wrong with a course or 2 of block laid on that slab. If anything it’ll have a far better bond to the concrete as he was able to start laying before the slab was burnished. The more open the concrete surface is the better the mortar will bond the cmu and concrete together. Block laid on a fully burnished slab will not bond as well as they should to the slab.

I had a customer who would start laying block on a freshly poured slab. They would use the dregs of my load in a wheelbarrow and a bag or so extra of mortar mix to set the anchors. They had the amount of concrete, due to their years of experience, almost down to the rocks. One driver who hated this particular contractor would get loaded, and go out back behind the plant and dump off a half a yard or so. The contractor would come up short by a half a yard and had to order another yard with the possibility of a cold joint.

I have a question, I’m going to build a 16x24x4” concrete slab for a shed/work shop. Never work with concrete but, do I need to use rebar or wire mesh. Also do I need to put a saw cut in it? Some people said to use wire mesh and no on putting a saw cut because of the size of slab.

I roofed the front of a house before the back roof deck was sheeted. But it was running about 100 for a week and the framers were way behind. Had to many jobs lined up not to start. Builder told me to do it. Framers were OK about it. Surprised I could roof at that temp.

@@MikeDayConcrete That is the high for the day. Morning were cooler and is when I roofed. I left when the sun crested the peak. About one in the afternoon. Roofing the front helped the builder keep his time line.

I have been in this situation and that day I asked them to leave. No problem as they had other jobs and they left. Another contractor and another contractor....and another. Parade of Homes crunch nonsense. So much stuff got torn up that day with all the builders working over one another. The GC threw his hands up in the air. Doing a good job for myself is about being patient and flexible. I would have left if the GC hadnt said "Has to be done today, just do your best" .

I think the mason was a dumbass; shows up early and makes it seem like you're holding him up....standing there with his armed crossed like he's in the right. If he had so much experience/knew what he was doing you'd think he'd wait a day for the slab to cure/dry. But what do I know; I think you handled it great! Much better than most of us would have I'd guess. Way to go Mike, good job!

As a builder, I’ve seen this before, but if this was my job and Mike you were the sub along with him under me, this wouldn’t have happened. Enough can go wrong when you’re trying to do it right so why and have the extra stress with letting a mason get ahead of the game by taking a chance of something happening down the road. Not worth it in my opinion.

I agree he should have just took a early lunch or something or came back the next day. If it is just 1 course and it is cured enough it should be fine as long as you are out of the way and finished. I still would have waited a day and came back. If it is more than 1 course then i would wait a few days before returning just to give it more time to cure up.

I read a few of the comments and this is actually a masonry technique. It’s called laying on a wet footer and believe it or not but it is stronger than laying on a set footer. That guy knew exactly what he was doing

Mike uses a chemical called super plasticizer. It makes a low water low slump concrete look like it has a lot of water in it. makes it super workable. We use it sometimes on my KZbin channel but Mike uses it all the time. It should still make a super strong slab. It probably was not available to your dad so he was correct to keep the water content down.

This is fairly common from my experience. Probably less so in residential construction than in high production high-rise type work. It was my job to get up on the freshly poured deck, just as soon as we weren’t putting bad footprints in the concrete and get the layout done for the mason, for them to start laying block or laying out columns and walls for the carpenter to form up. Sometimes on an elevated deck, the concrete finisher would still have their trowling machines on the last 1/3 of the deck, I’d be in the middle third doing layout and the mason would be flying cubes of block up in the first third and starting to lay up corner leads. Or the carpenters would be in the first third, forming columns and walls, getting ready to pour them in the afternoon. Deck pour in the morning. Pouring columns and walls on the same deck in the afternoon. Next morning, the columns and walls would get stripped and right away, deck tables would start being pulled from 2 floors below and flown up to start forming the next deck around the freshly poured columns and walls.

all fellow brick masons, we would lay and level one block on each corner, then drive two pieces of rebar about 6ft beyond 2 corners, pull a tight line on rebar, twig pin, some folks say trig pin that line to corner blocks and lay like a wild man! should have waited though
@vainwretch

Contractor is probably ram rodding the job and told him to jump on it. Looks like there is a foundation wall and part of the block is resting on that so maybe it want lean in on the fresh concrete slab. He should have waited until you started loading up your tools. Probably a good idea to take a video or pictures of this guy on the slab and that you didn't leave a mess around the plumbing etc....
