Incredible timing of this upload. I just started doing neck workouts last night for the first time. I loop a towel through a weight plate at the gym, bite down on the towel, and lift it up and down with my neck muscles. I'm not sure if you're able to safely do that, but that's one way of doing it and it's very effective

That's actually a good idea as long as you don't have false teeth like me. Lol

@@masonx54 oh that's right, you're missing your front teeth. Totally forgot. It might still work anyway. When you first start, you'll only be lifting 5-10 pounds. And if you're building strength, you can move up to a 25 and 45 lb plate. And if your front false teeth can't handle those heavier plates, I suppose you can use your molars. I'm assuming you still have them. And then there's the tricep pulldown machine for the front muscles, which you'd press down with your chin. Also, you can apply the first technique to the seated row machine

Don't do too heavy of weights or you'll end up with fake teeth like me. Lol

@@masonx54 by the way, I didn't know this...but there are bridges now where they cement real looking teeth to each other (on each end) and to make them more realistic looking, they put the teeth just under the gums. These stay in the mouth permanently....My mom had one of the old fashioned bridges where there were hooks.

OK, you're thinking of today. What I want to talk about is the neck and normal wear and tear 20 or 30 years from now with a spinal cord injury. There is going to be a LOT of arthritis and stenosis and further vertebrate damage. I failed to think about wear and tear and I ended up with a second spinal cord injury. So please be very careful to avoid further injuries because there may still be inflammation and swelling; which will lead to further damage because there won't be room for much more swelling.

@ masonellis...it's so sad people just want to do things for the here and now...but they a) obviously don't read comments ad b) they may not stop and think to take into consideration they could be harming themselves in the long run. Would you please do a part 2 to this video saying like anything with normal wear and tear...the damage in the neck that's already there will definitely get worse with age. Just like spina bifida..it worsens with age. Thank you.

Stretching and exercising muscles help protect joints from excessive wear and tear.

@@masonx54 exactly. I remember when I was going to a doctor for knee arthritis. The bones were grinding on each other. The doctor pointed out if I developed muscles, there wouldn't be as much pain because the muscles would doing the work and the bones wouldn't be grinding on each other like they are. I'm not disputing anything you have to say about developing stronger muscles. I broke my neck at 22, in 1983. I'm 63 now, and there has been A LOT of wear and tear from a damaged neck. I went from a C4 incomplete injury to a C4 - C6 incomplete injury with a LOT of swelling and inflammation that will not subside now. Working with swelling and inflammation could be doing more harm. So much more, that I ended up with a second spinal cord injury. Your example is of a healthy body...I'm talking about a damaged body. The wear and tear on a damaged body is going to be much more significant than the wear and tear on a healthy body. There's no need to get defensive...I'm just pointing out what may not be so obvious to others. Doing a muscular toning program may be adding to the wear and tear.

I wonder if they make a more complete unit that goes around the chin as well to prevent slipping? Great idea to keep those neck muscles mobile and flexible, it will prevent a lot of problems down the road. It's amazing how much movement we were getting by simply walking. We have to compensate now with creative alternatives. Thanks for sharing, Mason!

The harness I use in this video has a chin strap, but I connect it over my head. I don't use it because it prevents me from moving around for other head movements. Otherwise, I would have to reconnect the resistance band every time I turned for a different exercise. Thank you for watching and commenting!

I don't understand how ANYBODY can have enough time in the day to do all of the "rehab" exercises in a day. Hell when I was abled bodied it would take me 15 to 30 min to do but now that I'm cripple its going to take me30 min to an hr to do and I just don't have the time in a day to do all that stuff. Its truly frustrating.

Yeah, I understand what you are saying. Early after becoming paralyzed, I spent most of my day just ding the necessities to continue living. Eventually, I was able to get quicker at doing thing and got into a routine that allowed me to have time to do other things. How long have you been injured? Thank you for watching and commenting!

@@masonx54 thanks for responding. I’m 13 months post injury. 51yo male T4 incomplete. Able to walk with walker but not able to beat my total weight on my legs. It’s probably 80% upper and 20% lower.

First thing you're not crippled you're physically challenged there's a difference. If things take longer to do then they just do you have to say to yourself might take longer, but I'll get it done and I'm speaking from 40 years of being in a wheelchair got hurt when I was 19 I'm 59.don't sell yourself short just because physical challenges that you now face

@ jeffreywhitaker, the term 'cripple' is quite derogatory and demeaning not only to others...but it makes people look at you as not as much of a person as you are...just letting you know.

I do everything on my own besides clipping my toenails and transferring to/from my shower wheelchair. My goal ever since I was told I was paralyzed has been to be 100% independent. I hate asking for help or having other people do things for me. Thank you for watching and commenting!
