OMG! I've wanted to get in Carraway for a while. My mom worked in the lab there, my grandfather, great aunt and father all passed away there. In fact, you walked right past the ICU room my grandfather died in! You were right about the hotel. It was there for families of long term patients to use at a deep discounted rate. This hospital was always the "one" you wanted to be taken to in critical situations. They were staffed with the finest doctors and nurses straight from a major medical school right across town (UAB). Therefore, it was a great teaching hospital too. The neighborhood is and pretty much always was, really bad. Such a loss for our city. Thanks for an awesome trip down memory lane, guys. Stay safe!

I live 10 minutes from this hospital and I must say those guys are pretty brave. This hospital is located in a rough part of town where crime is really high. I am very surprised they did not see a person or body in there. Very Interesting stuff. This place has no security, so who ever wants to walk in can without any problems.

The blue star was a beacon for decade's in Birmingham. Caraway was known as the best head trauma hospital to be helecoptopered to. So sad to see it as it is now.

The nasty colored stuff is from fire sprinkler water. Someone went into the building and stole all of the sprinkler heads because they're brass. at 5:36 your looking at a stand pipe for 2-1/2" hose valves for fire hoses and the entire valve is basically brass. Someone unthreaded it and there was still pressure in the pipe, thus making a huge mess.

Damn, this hospital is MASSIVE. Was the maintenance costs the most likely reason it closed? I don't understand why so many hospitals keep getting shut down. I could watch hospital videos one after another for two days and I won't see even half of them. I'm blown away how much stuff gets thrown out too. Next time a politician demands support for a new hospital, I'll ask: "Then why did they close down five of them last year?"

Hospitals are a business, not federal, so over years Carraway put it's patients before money (which is quite honestly a very thoughtful thing) however, it sadly closed because bankruptcy which is very sad. I have never seen the hospital in its glory days for i am only 19 and have only lived in alabama the past 4 years, but i go to see Carraway often with a group of friends i made at UA as a freshman. Very sad story and a even sadder look on how the years have treated this abandoned beaut since closing in 2008

If I was a "scrapper" and I hit that place that MRI machine would be the first thing I would have been going for. While it isn't scrap, it has an actual large value if given the right buyer, which generally is other , usually lesser countries that don't have that kind of equipment at their disposal. It really sickens me that they would just leave that to rot away with that extremely large building

At 4:56: The books with "Cancer" and years on their spines are actually all of the issues of the medical journal called "Cancer" for that year. The journal Cancer is still in publication today and costs a few hundred dollars a year for a subscription. Content consists of peer-reviewed articles about clinical research in oncology. Obviously, if you've got a bunch of doctors and health practitioners interested in this field, it's usually less expensive/less hassle for the institution to buy and maintain a subscription to the journal rather than all of the doctors owning and storing their own copies. Today, hospital libraries most likely would have an online subscription to this journal. Even this old stuff is online.

So excited to see this posted!! And yes, most hospitals have a gift shop for those who are sick. You can usually get flowers, candy, stuffed animals, cards, and balloons. Whenever we went to our local hospital when I was little, it's gift shop had a whole bunch of TY beanie babies. I was that annoying kid that would "hint" to their parents about toys they wanted. "Oh mom, look of soft that beanie baby is...and it's blue! I've always wanted one like that....oh it's so pretty mom" Good ole mom would usually just agree and pull me along lol.

So, I know a small amount about those Radiation Therapy rooms as my group at work supports them. There is a huge amount of safety involved with them, one interesting example being that the patient has a special necklace that verifies that the correct patient is in the room and that they are receiving the correct treatment plan. That and many other safety techniques all stem from the early days of these machines. Many patients have suffered radiation burns and died as a result of a lack of safety checks built into the machine itself. The console would tell the machine to do one thing, and there was nothing that went from the machine to the console to confirm the instructions, so a patient who was only supposed to receive a small amount of radiation, received a beam of radiation "wide open" and would get fried. This was an early version of the Varian machine.

We use bolus to bring the dose delivered by the linac closer to the skins surface for more superficial treatment, or for even dose distribution if there's gaps in your patient you want filling.

Those gel pads are for positioning the patient. The treatment area has to be placed precisely into the beam. Those pads are soft against the skin, but stable enough to hold the body part in place.

(If you don't know what Penumbra: Black Plague is, it's an old horror game where you wake up in a tiled hospital, and some diseased-ridden creature is hunting you down in the first part. Good game. Bigger Hospitals normally have gift shops. Its so the family can buy like flowers or balloons for whoever is sick. They also sell novelty stuff like plush toys and stuff.

The Radiotherapy machine is missing a lot of hardware on both the table and the overhead arm, both of which make the machine much more intimidating. Also, both the overhead arm and the table are able to tilt and sway to target cancer cells on all 3 axis. To make things scarier you have to basically are locked to the machine. And yes your guess is right about the gel, they use it to keep from hurting the skin near the treatment area. If they don't use the gel it feels like a bad sunburn the next day.

It always boggles my mind how these massive, multi-million dollar structures are just left to rot. Such an incredible waste of resources. The time spent designing the hospital blueprints. The labor and material it took building it. The wiring and duct work. The furnishings, medical books, and supplies. All that equipment left there too must be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Yes. Contrary to what the person above me said, they most likely didn't have the funds to move anything, plus why pay to move it, then pay to store it, when it's already being stored? The average security guard in Alabama get's paid $30k a year, and you'd probably need at least 4 (Two night shift, two day shift), for a total of $120,000/year to guard a building that is not only not generating money, it's actually LOSING money since they'd also have to pay: Electric, gas, water, and custodial services, plus the repairs of any damage outside of the scope of any insurance on the building. Honestly, I'm more surprised they don't just knock 'em down right off the bat.

@@Helladamnleet they don't just knock it down because some real estate development company will come in and buy it for pennies, shut off all the utilities, pay the depreciated property tax (if at all) to try and develop it at a later date. Demolition is expensive and requires city approval etc. They'll sit on it until the city council gets sick of it, gives them some subsidy to redevelop the land and be done with it. It's actually exactly what's happening to this property now actually (they gave the developer $4.1 million in subsidy that was released in may 2022). I work in real estate and have seen it a bunch of times before, albeit on a much smaller scale. Each situation is very different though

Because usually someone keeps it intact for a bit, expecting to sell the whole thing off to a new buyer...then time goes by, the owner can't afford even trickle maintenance anymore, negotiations drag out or fall through, and then you're trying to sell a building that's been abandoned 18 months, the air & water systems have all gone to hell, and now it requires too much to make it viable so it goes even worse until no $$ come in at all to maintain it.

This hospital went down with the 08 recession. I’m sure they tried to auction off all the medical equipment they could, but most was probably outdated or too expensive to move. Sad to see a building go to waste.

That's just a bunch of nonsense. It doesn't even make sense - it doesn't make anybody money to leave a bunch of equipment to rot. This is what happens when an orderly liquidation is not conducted. Typically when a for-profit organization shuts down, it is liquidated, with all the equipment auctioned off and the property either sold or stripped of anything of value before being abandoned. This way, the owners or shareholders minimize their losses as much as possible and the valuable equipment ends up in the hands of someone who has a use for it. But in the case especially of nonprofit organizations, there is great reluctance to liquidate because everyone wants someone else to take over the whole operation and keep it going, and there is no pressure from shareholders to minimize losses. In the best case they succeed and someone takes over and keeps the operation going, but in the worst case negotiations and redevelopment plans get stuck in limbo, or nobody at all is willing to take it over, and without security and maintenance the equipment quickly loses any value.

Bill Williams You do realize that makes no sense as no one makes any $$ at all from letting expensive medical equipment sit abandon in a building, right? If it were only about money/greed, every bit of equipment would have been sold through liquidation sales as soon as the hospital closed. The most common reason you see medical equipment left in hospital buildings is for the simple fact that when the hospital is closing it’s basically the hope of investors that the building will be bought out, medical equipment included. To put it in simpler terms, they hope for possibly a larger management medical group to take over & continue running the hospital. Sometimes when the hospital is about to close there’s already negotiations underway that involve keeping all medical equipment & at the last second when the deal is almost finished it ends up falling through for whatever reason. These negotiations can be long & drawn out, they may be dropped & picked up many different times by various investors/medical groups... by the time they continue to fall through repeatedly & the building sits empty the medical equipment is already out of date/hasn’t been serviced for some time... it becomes obsolete quickly especially with no maintenance being performed. Eventually it becomes obvious they aren’t going to be able to sell the building, the medical equipment is useless at that point & wouldn’t legally be used by any other medical organizations in the US anyways (there are regulations for certain medical equipment as well), everything gets written off as a loss. It’s not necessarily intended to let it sit & waste, sometimes unforeseen circumstances happen

HistoPixel Productions if you look around at the floors you will see lots of white and black pipe insulation everywhere. Looks like long noodles. Vandals tear open walls and ceilings and pull out the copper pipes. Worth good money in scrap. Also all the breaker panels in the hallways looked open with all bussbars and breakers removed. More copper and $$$$.

Yes. Sledgehammer, pipe cutter, and bolt cutters. In smaller abandoned buildings like houses, the walls really get wrecked; they knock in a wall switch, yank out some wire, wrap it around the bolt cutters, then pull, ripping it out all around the room. Sinks and toilets are smashed with the sledge. In areas where I know copper pirates hit hard, I leave really loud snap-firecrackers on top of ajar doors. Pirates are skittery, and if they hear a loud bang, they may jet.

I worked in a hospital, in the Radiology department. Hospitals do have gift shops. The reason for all those rooms, is probably because this hospital provided more advanced treatment, for more types of disease issues. This hospital looks massive. What gets me, is why, all the places you go to, don't get torn down. They pose a hazard. You guys really do a great job. Thanks.

I wish that most abandoned buildings were untouched just so you could see how everything was left. Now that’s creepy, and that would give me the chills. Or, you guys could find one that was just recently abandoned. Stuff that looks like it wasn’t finished/left behind is really bone chilling to me! I hate how teenagers have to come in and destroy everything and vandalize.

PS. If you guys are planning on visiting this interesting place again Try to find the Maintenance/Facility management/Security. Often top floor and/or sub-basement level. With a bit of luck maybe there's a detailed layout-map of the entire facility Maybe there's something interesting! Like unmarked rooms only accessible by one specific staircase

You should go back there with a geiger counter and check how radioactive it is in there...that brown stuff out of the pipes is most likely rusty water from a decrepit fire supression system that was never flushed. 13:46...evp?

In radiation therapy, they put bolus over the area being treated to more precisely regulate the dosage being given. It has qualities very similar to human tissue. Awesome vid as always.
