Honestly, why is FIDE so angry? Freestyle is 960. FIDE doesnt do ANYTHING related to 960. Its not like the freestyle group is trying to take over classical chess or anything. They are just a private organizer of a type of event that fide doesnt bother to do. And they were threatening to ban people from playing FIDE events if they played in freestyle?! Insane. I mean. Its like saying; If you play Norway chess (classical, privately organized) or Tata steel (classical, privately organized) you arent allowed to play the FIDE world cup. They are insane. Sutovsky mostly, but all of fide is koooo-koo

It certainly smells like someone didn't get their kickback, that's for sure. International sport federations tend to attract a certain breed, and I don't just mean FIFA or FIE or UCI or whatever governing body is in the news as of late.
@caerdwyn74674 күн бұрын
This pattern, with an organization thinking they basically “own” a game or sport whose rules don’t have an owner, comes up again and again. It never has anything to do with the sport or game; it is always about money for the lawyers and prestige for wannabe “owners”. FIDE no more “owns” chess or the words “world champion” than the FIA “owns” auto racing or the words “champion driver”. They need to get over themselves and realize they serve, not command. FIDE needs the top players a hell of a lot more than the top players need them.

Anna Cramling made a video of a game she played against Hikaru, and right before the game started, Anna asked Hikaru whether he was #2 or #3 in the world, which he responded to by saying “Who cares.” and I also remember the comments saying that Hikaru seemed upset by the question, and a lot of people thought he was being rude to Anna. But then weeks later, in one of her streams, someone asked her about it live (while I was watching) and Anna said that Hikaru and her talked a lot that day, and that he was one of the nicest people she’s ever met. Now, with this new drama, it seems more likely he wasn’t upset by the question, but rather the fact that so many people (even/especially those with influence) consider FIDE themselves and the ratings that they give out are considered to be the end-all-be-all governing body of chess. After watching Hikaru’s video, it seems he’s been privy to something like this for awhile. This comment is all speculation though. But so is this video at the time of me writing this lol

It is not that easy... FIDE is not just organising Super Tournaments. Those, yes if someone like Carlsen starts his own federation, can easily manage. FIDE also organises (or is at least involved in scheduling and rating) almost every low to mid level tournament, which is not easy to organise and manage for any new org, regardless of who the top sponsor is. That requires infrastructure, man power which is difficult to rally and build within a few years.

There is little structural stability in chess as a sport. FIDE is the closest thing we have to that currently, but they will always lack authority if they cannot dominate player careers financially. I've thought for a while that FIDE making their organization name prominent in the events is actually undermining their status. It implies there can be others. If you call an even simply the World Championship, than later you say organized by FIDE or something, you're elevating the status of the event, inhibiting others from making other WC's, and at the same time advertising your organization. Trying to elevate the organization *over* the event won't serve either purpose as well.

Regardless, the way live chess is televised is pretty woeful. There is no understood standardised format the way there is in tennis. This puts a lot of people who aren't chess experts off. 1. Having a clear and stable view of the current board position at all times 2. Keeping commentary on point, so that it mirrors what the players are doing in the moment. 3. Keeping commentary sterile during rapid move sequences Too often during the WCC you'd have commentators chatting about something irrelevant and 3 or 4 moves were played, with no view of the board. That's like cutting away from the tennis court during the end of a match point rally and chatting about where they went on holiday last year. The format and commentary protocols need serious fixing before chess will ever reach a wider audience.

Good rundown, but I think the lack of reaching out to "the sources" (Hikaru, Magnus, etc.) does leave a vacuum to be filled with a follow-up video?

Well, and the promised future statement from the president of FIDE also suggests that there may be content for a follow-up video.

Hmm, Fisher left chess because he felt it was too much about memory and not enough about chess skill. He was pushing for Fisher Random because he felt it was a decent way of stopping the domination of memorization. In my opinion, although Fisher probably wouldn't care, a type of Chess named after him ultimately would be better than Chess 960 or any other attempt to rebrand. I mean, even if he's not technically the best ever by stats anymore, he's still one of the greats modern players stand on the shoulders of. It's respectful to Fisher to keep his name attached to this format in respect for the attempt he made to improve the game at a time nobody would listen.

All Magnus and Hikaru have to do is live stream random chess with Levy and Botez sisters, collaborate with other content creators from completely different field's, Kai Cenat, Sidemen, MrBeast, etc, literally just pay them to make a video on their channels, hosting you 5 playing a round robin event. And within 2-3 years all chess streamers will have funds and community to host their own events, and FIDE will remember the days they had control other all the other chess players... In isolation it may seem crazy.. but i think it's easier than you might realise... think of "other content creators" viewers, as "passive income" a 2-3 month wave and it will make it's return on your initial investment(s) then you collaborate with all other chess streamers and ride it out... random and algorithms go very well together.. the chess will play itself 😉 Ps (6* Anna too)

freestyle chess is actually much more fun to watch and play compared to regular chess as the games are more combative and less theoretical. Just try and beat your opponent and that’s it. If a beginner learns how the pieces move and learn the tricky way of castling then they’re practically ready to play.

I agree with FIDE’s stance on the use of “World Championship.” Last week when I saw that Magnus became world champion in something, I was confused. Having so many “world championships, will dilute the value of the FIDE world championship held bi-annually.

Chess would be much more "viewer friendly" with a move time limit. Give each player 5 minutes per move, maximum, on top of the overall game clock/increment.
@mburg334 күн бұрын
It already exists but it’s barely used, it’s called delay. Set time to think each move but after that expires, the actual clock counts down. It’s actually a much fairer time control since “classical” games get decided in time trouble rather than the position.

i remember something similar happening in the world of Football (Soccer) where a handful of clubs wanted to create a new league called 'The European Super League' which was independent to FIFA. This drama took by the storm and the did not reach an agreement at the end. A similar thing happened in the World of F1 where multiple teams threatened to create their own league and drop out from F1 due to reasons. Football (Soccer), F1 on one side with their viewership and numbers chess on the other. This is required for CHESS to grow i believe.

I think the gold is at freestyle with 5 minutes time but generous increments, say 90 seconds per move. You keep it fast paced, but with enough time to produce quality moves, and you remove all the boring "i need to learn openings" part. It's pure active chess, no memory, fast paced but with enough time to think and produce interesting games.

@@AnjelLee-f8c Yes it is bit confusing for some of the public who may find it difficult to distinguish! In India when chess was played in the early years pawns can not move two steps from the starting position. The games were very slow but later it was changed. Since the computers have almost destroyed the normal chess and any one can easily copy the openings etc. it is only natural that we need to encourage the Chess 960 that can reveal the beauty of human intuition. Perhaps we need to educate the common public about the existence of two different world titles!

The problem is that, if FIDE does attempt to force all these top players to choose between these prize-winning tournaments, that means an anti-competition lawsuit, at least if we're in the US. None of these guys signed an exclusivity deal, after all, and forcing it on players to crush a competitor is definitely illegal. And if FIDE decides to go that route, they very well could get sued for it.

Rapid chess standard needs to go to 15m games. 10m goes by a little too fast and ends up in a bullet end game too often, which is meaningless to most viewers.

I agree. And it should always be 15+0. The bullet rush at the end isn't really about chess skill as much as it is about reaction time.
