Old buildings like these rarely have adequate defensive measures. Plus you never really know what got soaked into the frame over the decades. Short of teleporting a whole lake onto the structure, you can only hope to control it.

Property that is idle is burned out across country for numerous reasons . 1. Insurance money, economy 2. No taxes on building if total burn is done.. land where building sits up for sale win. Win

Access was horrendous. Water supply was terrible. Fire loading was extreme. EFD did a heck of a job stopping it at all.
@randall39
@randall39 6 ай бұрын
Noting all the complaints about not putting more water on it, there is a finite supply which is usually used to the most effect. In regards to that having worked with EPA, hazmat, and the DEQ, all that water has to go somewhere, and being an old industrial plant, it’s not known what will be carried with the water into the environment. Water contamination can be a much bigger concern than the air. Look at the case in Ohio where the petroleum product plant was allowed to burn, and just the exposures were protected. That was due to the close proximity to the river, and large amounts of water would carry the pollutants to the river.

Just lots of partially burned oils, and anything else that can burn. You don't need volatile petro chemicals to create a lot of pitch black smoke. Modern construction is full of materials that outgas volatiles at high temperatures, wood, upholstery, paper roils, wiring. It may not burn well at low temperatures but at high temperatures, everything is flammable except for concrete and steel.

At 11:30 it seems as if the factory was abandoned for quite some time. I wonder what was stored inside to make the fire set up at least three warehouses; it is not just one that is on fire. The person filming the blaze is always panning the camera at a relatively wide angle, which accounts for the extent of the fire. Like I mentioned, this place looks as if abandoned for years, so some arsonist or other had made it inside.

@@ronaldfountainjr9535 Thanks! I knew that Locals know more about this place than I can see on the screen. Well, distribution companies need space for storage - that's the stuff that went up here. If we listen closely, we can even hear small explosions. It's for some reason that the members of the fire department kept themselves at a safe distance. Sorry for the owners of the businesses destroyed in the fire. I'm still sure this was arson! All the best!

Flying fire tankers don’t do building fires. Also flying tankers don’t drop foam, they either drop retardant which is designed for vegetation, or water. Even the large planes only carry up to 3000 gallons, which doesn’t equal what the fire department is probably putting on PER MINUTE. With fire crews around this building, a water drop would be very hazardous for the fire department members.

It has always been said that the best way to fight a fire is to start at the bottom and work upward. It has been also stated that you use high pressure/volume hoses , it has also been said that you fight fire with manpower and you keep it from spreading to other structures. I did not from the video get a complete view of the fire scene so my knowledge to respond is limited because I don't know how long the fire had been burning before firefighters arrived and i don't know if they were with a professional firefighter department or a volunteer fire unit , in this case, how long before water was put on the structures, but a combination of foam and water would be best (if available) I do note that this should have been a general alarm fire meaning all available equipment respond even from neighboring departments in=f necessary. I saw firefighters on a stairway of another building (5 or more) which I assume they were checking to se if the fire had spread to that structure - - it would only take one or two at the most to look inside with modern fire detection equipment to see if fire had spread to that building otherwise it was a poor use of manpower (they had no firefighting equipment with them). I saw several men walking around near one of the fire units doing nothing - don't understand but they were not what is known as command persons directing operations - there was a one story building which apparently was fully involved yet nothing was being done to extinguish that fire which was helping the spread to other buildings. As I said I only saw the You Tube video which did not show the extent of the involvement of those buildings and all the equipment involved nor was there any explanation of what the involved buildings contained - which is very important when fighting a fire. My opinions are based only on what I was able to see off a You Tube video - but hinging watched the famous Grenfell Tower fire In London England from start to finish - the LFD had no set procedures, did not have the proper equipment, did not have proper training and there equipment was only capable of reaching 10 stories of the 24 story building - in that fire (an 24 story apartment building in downtown London) and people were told to stay in their apartments - unfortunately there was only one escape stairway unlighted and no aux lighting and no floor identification. No firefighters were injured but 72 people died. Additionally I have watched many You Tube videos of house fires, store fires, warehouse fires, all types of fires and in many instances the buildings were allowed to burn to the ground because the were not enough persons and equipment to fight the fire and the water supply was not near the fire. I am no expert of firefighting - all I can do is be objective with what I see on You Tube videos. I do know this - my biggest life fear is fire and it is a fear I have had since childhood. I am not in anyway a professional firefighter and have no background in fighting fires - all I have is my limited knowledge of firefighting. Obviously a professional will have different opinions from my opinion and that is welcome and will also increase my knowledge of how to fight a fire if I am ever involved in a fire situation. I am no way demeaning of questioning the abilities of the firefighters who were fighting this fire.@@FDNYResponseVideos

@@rhh3582 EFD arrived on scene and struck a 2nd alarm on arrival, 4th within 15 minutes Fully defensive within a half hour iirc. From there they brought it up to a 5th alarm (6th if you count the cover). Along with the 5th alarm was IMTT Bayonne and Kinder Morgan industrial departments that had the Neptune system flowing massive amount water. Besides this they also had the fire boat task force set up supplying water to the best of their abilities on the shore line. It’s a real old factory complex before many fire safety protocols were enacted and enforced, this allowed to fire to spread rapidly through the structure. On such large scenes they try not to separate separate towns from each other hence why you say all the Westfield guys together and Cranford guys

@@bloodravensterminator8594 I could tell the building was old and run down - my concern was with the limited video available was I really able to make a proper determination - my comments were based on what I believe would be the "normal" procedures used on a 5th alarm fire which this obviously was. I was also very concerned about the men/women working the fire - because it was such an old building and I feel certain you understand my concern. In my area all our fire agencies have mutual-aid agreements - if one needs help they simple put out an alert and other fire agencies respond asap. Somewhat of an advantage we have a combo airport/military airport equipment by military fire equipment that can be called upon as needed and civil fire equipment can respond to the air field as necessary. Your comment was useful and assured me that firefighting needs are being met as needed in your community.

Just think..... Soon we won't have these nasty, polluting fires. We can have nice clean electric lithium ion battery fires instead. And soon we won't have electric appliances, because we will need to use that electricity to charge vehicles, and we certainly can't use natural gass, so we better get used to clothes lines again, after washing our clothing by hand (no appliance to machine wash) and we will have to chop down trees by hand ( can't use chain saws anymore), and we can build campfires to cook and keep warm. Ahh! Back to the good old days. Nice huh?.

No disrespect intended, but why have so many firefighters on scene if they are just going to stand around and watch? I know the building was a total loss from the start, but why not put some water on it to put it out so it just doesn't fill the air with smoke? Watching all these videos have changed my opinion of firefighters, that's for sure...
