I have looked at these and there are many opinions out there regarding them. For me, I like facts. The undeniable fact is that if I placed a Goldback in my bureau a year ago, forgot about it and just found it today, the exchange rate of it has gone up over 20% over that time. If I had left US currency in the same spot, would it have risen in price?
@Spegtacular17 күн бұрын
You know the answer to that.
@kenofken945817 күн бұрын
It will have to go up 100% before you even break even. There's a solid chance gold in any form will go up a year from now, but even still if I offered to sell you a 1/2 ounce gold eagle today for the full ounce spot price, you probably wouldn't think that a good deal. Yet for goldbacks doing just that is considered a brilliant move.
@gared28716 күн бұрын
@@kenofken9458 Most commentators readily admit Goldbacks are not useful for stacking. I believe that is what you are saying as well, and I would 100% agree with you. However, if you buy a Goldback for $5.50 and walk into a store (that takes them) and receive $5.50 in purchasing power value, the premium does not matter at all. If one pays a premium when buying junk silver and then tries to use it to purchase something, one will only get melt value. The premium is lost. Our politicians in Washington are destroying the value of our money. This in undeniable. We need to start to undo that somehow.
@kenofken945814 күн бұрын
@@gared287 And why would anyone treat a $2.25 piece of gold as worth $5.50? Unless they're high or have some significant cognitive deficiency, the only reason they would do that is if they believe the next guy will also treat it as worth $5.50. So the value, half of it anyway, exists only in the minds of the holders of the currency. Pure faith. That's the very definition of a fiat currency. So you've created another fiat currency like the dollar but one that has maybe 0.1% of the recognition and acceptance worldwide. There are roughly 8 billion people in the world who will take USD, no questions asked. Goldbacks? Probably some number readily expressed in thousands. With no ready system to transfer goldbacks digitally, you're basically restricted to using them in person. In any given local economy, you'd be hard pressed to find 10 people who would take them in payment for anything. Maybe more in Utah or certain epicenters of goldback awareness. If the secondary market decides that a goldback is worth only melt, as 99%+ of people in the world would today, you've got another problem: It's one of the least economical ways of harvesting melt value. So in reality if that whole fiat belief system around goldbacks breaks down, what you'd probably get is half to maybe 70% of melt. As a cool bit of small artwork or novelty numismatic, I can see buying a few. Not as currency or bullion.

With the premium they are double the precious metal value at the self-declared exchange rate. Negotiable fractional gold definitely has some potential utility, but with those super high premiums I don’t see how junk silver wouldn’t work better. Two 90% silver dimes has about the same metal value as the $5.42 rate for a 1/1000 goldback. With the dimes you’re getting more metal value instead of subsidizing production costs.
@Spegtacular17 күн бұрын
Silver is heavy. I think that’s the biggest flaw to your argument. In the event that gold and silver can become money again (remember it’s only a short time in human history when it hasn’t been) you’ll want something you can easily carry around that will still have good buying power.

@@Spegtacular People managed silver just fine for thousands of years. An i-Phone weighs six ounces. That much in silver will easily get you through any normal day out and about. People regularly carry concealed carry pistols weighing 16-20 ounces and more. Long before goldback printing technology was a thing, people also figured out plenty of ways to avoid the physical and security hassles of lugging around lots of precious metals: Letters of credit, bills of exchange, checks etc. By the middle ages if not before, most commerce above street level retail was done without hauling tons of metal around every day.

@laserdisque I think premiums have been far too stigmatized in the precious metals scene. Everyone talks about a gold and silver premium but never on the premiums on day to day items like coffee, flour, sugar, etc. The Goldback "premium" comes from the utility value of the hyperfractional gold aswell as the manufacturing cost. The exchange rate posted on the Goldback website is pretty sound and you rarely see a goldback used or sold for below that value. The way I see it is this: You pay $5 for a goldback that has $2.50 of gold in it and then you spend the goldback for $5 worth of value; in that way there is no premium. Considering the "premium" value stays tacked to the bill, I think it's unfair to look at it from that perspective, purely off the "premium". To summarize what I've said, everything has a premium, just stigmatized more in silver and gold. Also, materials can have value beyond their raw value, and goldbacks are one of those items. There's no comparable item on the market that brings this level of fractionality and utility with gold. The "premium" is tacked to the note and it retains said value, meaning you paid no premium at all when you go to use it. On top of all that, constiutional silver like dimes etc are being faked 24/7 by Chinese sellers, etc. No goldback has ever successfully been counterfitted. They are the safer option. Also, for those not in the precious metals loop, a worn down 1954 dime is just a dime, they won't look at it for the silver value. Atleast with a goldback it's clear in what it is.
@kenofken945814 күн бұрын
@@SmxreKing Goldbacks can easily be counterfeited by nation states or high level criminal organizations. It would be trivially easy for China or Russia or North Korea to fake them. All of the exotic printing and anti-counterfeit features involved are the same technologies that are primarily sold to, developed by, and used by nations for their own currency and documents. The only reason it hasn't been done so far is because the market in goldbacks is not enough to warrant the effort. I think only a few dozen million dollars of these things exist. It would probably take that much to set up a world class counterfeit operation. If and when there is a sufficient profit margin, you will see fakes. The premium for goldbacks does not in fact stick with the product. Not inherently. If you buy $2.50 worth of gold for $5, there is no law which requires anyone after you to accept it for $5 value. That can go away in a heartbeat.
