A subsidence is a "gradual" lowering of the land. A sinkhole is a "sudden collapse" that creates a distinct hole in the surface. This sounds more like a sinkhole.
@garyowen90442 күн бұрын
No. A sink hole is a naturally occurring depression formed when voids in the subsurface structure can no longer support the surface features. This generally occurs in areas that are listed as a karst topography of limestone or dolomite. These soluble carbonate rocks dissolve over time, creat voids and, depending on hydrologic forces, may collapse at any speed. This is a mine shaft failure, other failures also mimic sink holes - utility failures for instance.

What is the difference between a sinkhole and land subsidence? Sinkholes are just one of many forms of ground collapse, or subsidence. Land subsidence is a gradual settling or sudden sinking of the Earth’s surface owing to subsurface movement of earth materials. The principal causes of land subsidence are aquifer-system compaction, drainage of organic soils, underground mining, hydrocompaction, natural compaction, sinkholes, and thawing permafrost. Land subsidence can affect areas that are thousands of square miles in size. A sinkhole is a depression in the ground that has no natural external surface drainage. Basically, this means that when it rains, all of the water stays inside the sinkhole and typically drains into the subsurface. Sinkholes are most common in what geologists call, “karst terrain.” These are regions where the type of rock below the land surface can naturally be dissolved by groundwater circulating through them. Soluble rocks include salt beds and domes, gypsum, limestone and other

The obvious question is were they aware of the mine when they bought the property? Great reporting. (Sarcasm)

instead paying 350 truck load concreate , they just relocate the House , pay the home owner that many truck load concreate could ad up more then house worth .
@DRventura3334 күн бұрын
Goodness, if that is mine country, sadly, they might seriously have to relocate, as it could be their homes next. Such devastation. Many wouldn't be able to sleep at night worrying the house might cave in. Not sure if this is same area the elderly grandmother was engulfed by a massive sink hole, to her demise, in Pennsylvania, while looking for her pet, a few weeks back. Her son had passed away and she was caring for her granddaughter, who was in the car, not far away from the sink hole.

I don’t know the area, but is anyone asking about fracking?

Not wanting to be on camera for obvious reason then a news agency just playing old video footage is tragic. Imagine being so ridiculous you slither around the world like that. The same enrgy as "WeLl AcKtUly" type people.

Pool leaking...
@Tipperary757Күн бұрын
Would have been helpful to discuss why subsidence occurs on the first place. Has there been mining or fracking nearby? What is affecting their soil -- twice?

Now they have an even larger swimming pool. What's the issue?
@frankblangeard88652 күн бұрын
At 1:04 it is referred to as a 'mine subsidence'. Who builds an outdoor pool in Pennsylvania?
@MonkeyMind6921 сағат бұрын
1:20 - Over 350 TRUCKLOADS of cement sounds like a MASSIVE waste of taxpayer money and resources. I get that we want to support taxpaying citizens during their times of need, but there needs to be some common sense around it too. Seems like there would be a better option than filling the earth up with over 5600 TONS of concrete, that could have been used for construction instead.

Merry F’n Christmas! Some present hey? Seems like the same time of the year for both incidents. Can’t they do some type earth x-ray scan to see if property is ok to build on for new builds in this day & age?
@jamesf.ryaniii79183 күн бұрын
Why does this always happen near a swimming pool?? Is it the weight of all of the water and concrete on the already mine shaft compromised land below?? Or perhaps a slow undetected leak in the swimming pool caused erosion into the mine shaft below?? How come neither of the houses were swallowed?? The house has got be just as heavy as the swimming pool, right?? That's what makes me think that a leak in the swimming pool is the culprit.....aside from building on top of an abandoned mine shaft....

Swallowed the swimming pool or massive upgrade?

Did they build the house on an old landfill?
@merryhunt91532 күн бұрын
Did they get title insurance when they bought the place? (unless they inherited it?) A title insurance company should have checked for mines below.

Praising the Lord this didn’t happen while you all were swimming in the summer🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼. This sounds devastating enough but so thankful you all are safe!

They should move immediately for their safety and possibly their neighbors as well. That land is not safe at all!
@sharit79707 сағат бұрын
Yikes!!! It's a miracle nobody was hurt- if the ground is that unstable that it had to happen, good thing it happened now and not in the summer with people in the pool!

I had something similar happen to me. I had a koi pond that disappeared one night. I knew I had a leak somewhere, The water would go down about 6 inches a day. But thought it was in one of the underground pipes. Nope. It was leaking through the pond liner. One day I woke up to the pond being gone and several hundred dollars worth of fish gone as well, nowhere to be found. The water leask caused the silt in the soil to migrate down into the watertable. With out the silt to "cement" the larger soil pieces, it was only a matter of time before it lost cohesion and dropped into the sink hole it created.

Improper mining practices, sue the government and the mine officials.

This happened years ago in the 1970's in Youngstown Ohio. Unexplained shift of land. I don't think it's mining. I truly believe it is more complicated than that.

Sink hole same as subsidence?

This is why you should look into everything in the area before you purchase a house, mineral rights can have devastating consequences if you don't own them in a company is mining them underneath your property.

I would definitely abandon that property. 2x is way too many times. Hope homeowners insurance covers loss.
@laurie76894 күн бұрын
Most homeowners insurance won't cover sinkholes or mine subsidence. I live in a part of the country that has sinkholes and ground penetrating radar from satellites makes it look like Swiss cheese. Insurance won't cover damage from sinkholes here. PA has always been a major player in the mining industry since early on in US history, so it is riddled through with mine shafts. I suspect that now it probably looks like a termites nest underground.

The way i see it, these folks are paying a property tax for the location. Stands to reason that whoever is collecting the property tax money should be held liable.

Look at the outline of the property There is a line around it. At the back you can see a very small retention area with weeds, like a old pond use to be there before there were houses.
@rodeleon28753 күн бұрын
from the look of the soil it appears that the house is built on fill and mine slag. around here they built multi story assisted living building on slag piled on top of old mines a few years ago. the mine is filled with water and is about 150-200 feet below the surface. i know because i used to play on it 50 years ago. only a matter of time before that place starts sinking.
