Having had my “old timey bulls##t” corrected by the world’s highest ranked martial artist … I will have a rethink :-) Very funny and I am grateful to Chris for taking the literal and figurative falls in this video. I was looking forward to showing my children a video with their dad and uncle (Chris) in it … but I don’t fancy explaining to them what a foot fetishist is :-) Thanks to Master Ken for the laughs and the insights!

I apologize, Master, to have waited so long to see the film. But I have finally vidded it - the metaphor of the duality of the nature of man, impeccable. The representation of causality of action in the universe, perfect. The judicious use of violence - judicious. The synthwave style of the soundtrack - nostalgic. The use of the female form - arousing. The exhibition of kink - current. The representation of technology as an impediment- exact. The juxtaposition of badge, blood, and cuffs - original and cinematically important. The misfire and jam of an Austrian masterpiece - improbable. The use of cgi blood - unfortunate. The use of comedy - exceedingly enjoyable. The lack of double stomped groins - inexcusable. All in all, 8 out of 10.

Iain's insights into kata are pure gold - the most credible and practical interpretations I've ever seen - and I've loved training with him in the past. Even Master Ken's razor-sharp critique won't dim my enthusiasm for Iain's "old-timey bull$*!t". (But from now on I will try to remember to re-stomp the groin.)

MY problem with the technique- it doesn't end with a ball-stomp. You always end with a well planted nut-buster, before getting out of there and running as fast as you can (I understand why you skip the running part, it's standard procedure, plus us smokers- we only run when we absolutely need to).

people who "think' like this dont understand the role that kata SHOULD have in your training. It's a less-boring way to practice basic blocks and strikes and it teaches you to "flow" from one technique to another, maintaining your balance, power and readiness for another move
@practicalkatabunkai9 ай бұрын
With respect, you don’t understand kata if you truly feel it’s only supposed to be “less boring kihon”. Some modern karateka have reinterpreted kata to be art, callisthenics, coordination exercises, etc, but the original intent was to be a repository of combative knowledge, to provide a summation of a given system, and to provide a supplementary form of solo training. Funakoshi said that knowledge of the form, without being able to apply in an emergency, was “useless.” I totally agree. Mabuni said that, “Correctly practicing kata - having sufficiently comprehended their application- is the most important thing for a karate trainee.” Again, I agree. No point doing the kata if we don’t understand the bunkai. He also said, “kata must be practiced properly, with a good understanding of their bunkai meaning.” Ignore the bunkai of kata and it’s like learning good penmanship without ever understanding what has been written. It reduces karate to a form of dance or gymnastics. Learn what the kata is truly teaching, drill those methods with a partner in both drills and live work, and then we are doing karate as the old masters said it should be done. People are free to chose to approach kata in a non-traditional way (solo form only), but it’s not how it was done in the past and hence they can’t legitimately superimpose their new approach onto the kata and claim that’s how it “SHOULD” be done.
