Met Dean Lister a LONG time ago, when he trained at Fabio Santos's Academy in San Diego... Very humble and all-around good guy... Fabio Santos as well... Both legit badasses who could twist you into a pretzel or make you wish you could take a novacaine bath afterwards, but genuinely humble nice guys all around... Fabio was EXTRAORDINARILY likeable and approachable along with all of his students... Maybe I've just become jaded but it seemed that the schools in San Diego, at least back then, didn't have NEAR the amount of ego that a lot of schools in the Dallas area have... Won't mention names but some of the schools here on Dallas, basically sign you up on a contract then you're on that may with no actual instruction or direction. LOTS of egos though with higher belts kicking the crap out of those less skilled...
@Dang3rMouSe2 жыл бұрын
I've seen that too & it's real sad if a school gets like that. Everyone above white belt should always know that earning their rank also means helping lower ranks grow which makes the school stronger. Doesn't mean you now have access to use lower ranks as test dummies during free roll to work out some new technique you saw on YT 20x or to just completely brutalize them w/out helping them grow. That's why where I worked yrs ago we'd only award rank if we also saw the student starting to take on those responsibilities. All martial arts schools will get the occasional ego tripper as a student but most don't last (in my experience) if the instructors are professional & take on the responsibility of keeping their teaching space healthy & productive for all students. I hope you find a good school where you can continue growing🤙
