For quite a while now our channel has been pondering the possibility there being a Sega Master System Mini. After the Sega Genesis Mini 2 was released last year, however, our hopes have dipped a bit. But that doesn’t mean it won’t happen! After all, a Master System Mini just makes too much sense given the fact that SEGA owns the rights to the vast majority of the console’s game library and 8-bit consoles are so cheap to emulate. Thus, here are 55 of the best possible games that we’d like to see on a hypothetical Master System mini console.
Please note that we began this epically long video way back before the release of the Genesis Mini 2 and so a bit of what we say in the intro has become outdated….obviously Sonic Frontiers went on to be a successful game. It takes a very long time to review and edit 55 different games! Much longer than we anticipated.
So thank you very much for watching our long delayed overview of the Master System.

This is great video. It's almost as if you were an actual SMS user back in the day (as opposed to someone who explored the library decades later because they were busy playing NES at the time - which applies to most Americans on KZbin). Very impressive!

It’s true! In the 80s and early 90s I was a big SEGA fan….even before the Genesis became more popular after the launch of Sonic the Hedgehog. The only Mario game I personally owned was Mario Land for the Gameboy until my children started playing the 3DS and Switch in more recent years. I had always wanted a Master System, but my first console was a Sega Genesis in 1989. Thank you very much for watching dude! 😎

@@creativecatproductions 🙂 I'm a fan so as long as you keep making fun videos I'll continue watching. On a side note, are you enjoying the newer Evercade collections? I'd guess you like the Toaplan ones (I keep hoping they'll include Batsugin, Grind Stormer and Outzone so maybe I'll get those on a third) and the micro computer ones introduce a whole bunch of games I'm mostly unfamiliar with. The C64 don't appeal to me (neither does the C64 mini though if it drops down to $30 I'll probably check it out) but the Team 17 Amiga games look pretty cool. The A500 Mini is too pricey for only including 25 games IMO so I'm hoping they'll continue to add more collections to the Evercade.

I haven’t actually played the newer collections. I held back because Insaw that some people were having technical problems with the Irem collection and then, later on, it was unavailable. I especially want toaplan collection 1 but im not sure if that wad available either the last time I checked. I have to do a test of my evercade to see if it still works! @@creativecatproductions I had heard about that with Cathedral. It doesn't allow you to use the console save states and saw several you tubers talking about losing their game. That's too bad. They suffer from serious quality control issues. From what I understand, the cartridges they use are just flash memory sticks. I don’t think that ought to be a problem, but I suppose not all flash memory sticks are created equal. They’re not ROM carts though. I expect that after so many years many carts will be unplayable.

I would be really surprised if the Master System was a success in Canada, I'm pretty certain whatever is the most popular console in the US, is the most popular console in Canada, despite there being a bit more of a UK influence in Canada than the States. Fun video, the master system definitely had some nice looking games for the time, and even though I've never owned one, I thought I was aware of most of the big games, but there were some surprises here.

so I've been having a blast with the Master System over the past week or so. I can't believe it took me this long to give Alex Kidd Shinobi World a try as it's now a top 10 Master System game for me. I also put Wonder Boy in Monster Land in that same category. I thought it was a down grade of Wonder Boy in Monster World on the Genesis but no, completely different and a really fun little adventure that I was completely ignoring. Wonder Boy had me thinking again about Sega and their wacky decisions. Isn't it weird that they advanced Wonder Boy from action platformer, to arcade adventure to almost Metroidvania and then for the Genesis instead of continuing at least with the adventure theme they went back to a platformer? (I guess they added the shooter levels?)? I would imagine if a kid had the Dragon's Trap and then upgraded to a Genesis and picked up Wonder Boy 3 they would have been very disappointed. Add in how we missed out on Monster World IV in the states and it's just really funny how they messed with their own properties.
@creativecatproductions

Alex kidd in shinobi world is so much fun! Indeed, it’s a travesty that they didn’t exploit Monster World IV. That game is such a delight. Very beautiful and very fun. I think SEGA often looked to the horizon, without have a firm enough grip on where they were or where they had been. No sense of permanent identity. Nintendo mastered that. They always walked forward, but were careful to bring their success forward with them, reinventing their past for a new audience. We just saw the Mario movie….perfect example.

The Master System is a platform I have a weird history with. I didn't own one when it was contemporary in the US, and in fact only knew a few people who did. But by the late 90s I had managed to accumulate a small collection of around 20ish master system titles, and a few years ago (2019), I managed to complete a US released master system set (with the possible exception being European copies of Sonic and Strider which are only differentiated by an easy to counterfeit UPC sticker affixed to the US copies). While I think the NES absolutely destroys it in terms of the overall quality of the library, over the years I have developed a great appreciation for the platform and its unique library

Great video and this must have been quite a project. I really enjoyed the extra history and background included to go along with game description. I'll be watching this again and I think you gave me my play list for the summer. Like you said in reply to my other comment I just don't get why Sega doesn't seem to care about the Master System. They do so many Genesis collections and Mini consoles while they sit on so many quality games that many people don't know anything about. Especially when they were talking about such high costs that went along with the Mini 2 it seems to make sense to go for a console that would be much cheaper to produce both from the software and hardware perspective. So I'll keep hoping they make one and my only request (in addition to a large collection similar to what you gave) would be some option to flip the action buttons. So many of those early games have the jump and attack buttons backwards (Alex Kidd, Zillion, etc) and I think some fans would really like them to keep it but I hope they'd include an option for those who want the more traditional attack/jump. Or if they scrapped their original controller for a 3 button Genesis one to have the A button double up on the C so every game would offer both options.
@creativecatproductions
@creativecatproductions Жыл бұрын
Indeed! One thought I have is that perhaps Sega, being Japanese, perceives the master system as a loss or defeat and, thus, not a thing to celebrate publicly. Further, they seem to have refocused all of their marketing and sales efforts entirely on Japan, and since the Master System failed in Japan, its just not a viable consideration? Or maybe it is the fact that the controller and hardware were kind of odd? Putting a pause button on the console itself was pretty wack even in the 1980s. Its a shame though. I think yosuke okunari was plainly hinting at a master system a few years ago, but Sega seems to have changed their mind. They appear to be done with mini consoles.

@@creativecatproductions I'm such a Sega fan and have watched so many videos the past few years and I just can't understand half of the business decisions Sega made. I know Tom Kalinske isn't the genius/savior he likes to make himself out to be but he did seem to have an understanding of the market in the States and I wish Sega valued the market outside of Japan. So yeah, I think you're right. They just see the Master System as a failure instead of seeing the success it had in other regions.
@francescosmith7859
@francescosmith7859 Жыл бұрын
@@victor.elkins yeah you hit a lot of it and I think the reactionary thinking was the biggest issue. It's surprising because so many of the Japanese companies had grand visions and a long plan and while Sega was mostly winning the battle outside of Japan they were still so insistent on scoring a victory in Japan and were willing to throw the rest of the world market into the trash. I think other companies would have recognized what they had and realized eventually the rest of the world would be the bigger market than just Japan. oh well.

@@randallscott4581 man, thats hard to say. My understanding is that the memory on therse mini consoles are the most costly aspect. Since Saturn games are so huge compared to Genesis or Sega CD games im betting only a couple of dozen games would be included. You’d probably get a bunch of sega home ports of arcade games like Daytona and both virtua fighters. And you’d probably get the panzer dragoon trilogy. But sadly no light gun games, which were iconic on the console, and no sonic. No capcom 2D fighters either. Probably all the games by treasure would be included like Gaurdian Heroes. And maybe a few console exclusives like burning rangers. It would probably cost something outrageous too, like $120. Im thinking it wont happen. The genesis mini 2 never sold out the way they said it would.

So all hope might not be lost after all. I saw videos from both MLP and RGT85 discussing Sega and a Saturn Mini and while that seems like they're not ready (still a combination of too difficult to emulate and too expensive) it certainly sparks conversation for a Dreamcast or Master System Mini. I'll buy pretty much any mini console they decide on but I'm still shaking my head why they're not considering their own set up mini computer and sell games for all their systems either on carts like the Evercade or just using an online store. But at least it's exciting that mini console gossip is not all dead.

So I was watching the video again copying down titles for my summer play list and I had two thoughts. First, if we had to bet on the next mini console and will it be Sega (Master System, Saturn, Dreamcast) or Nintendo (Gameboy Advance, N64) which do you think it would be? I think the realistic answer is none of the above but it's still fun to think about. Second, as Sega made lesser ports of Genesis games for the Master System, isn't it a little weird they never went the other direction? I feel surprised we never saw a Master of Darkness for the Genesis (or better yet, Sega CD as a beefed up exclusive) or Zillion is another good example. I can't be the only person that looks as Zillion 1 and 2 and sees a combination of the two that could be a good rival for Metroid. Or if they expanded Golden Axe Warrior or Wonder Boy 3 to get another Zelda style adventure game on the Genesis. But then again, Sega never realized how important it was to have a Sonic game for their later consoles so maybe I shouldn't be surprised.

I think Sega is probably done with mini consoles. I DMed Yosuke Okunari a while back on Twitter and he seemed to indicate this….at least for the time. They clearly stated they were going to do at least one more, but the Sega Genesis Mini 2 is still on Amazon, and that was supposed to be a super limited release. Im guessing, at the $99 price (without the heavy shipping fee) that it just costs too much. But! If im allowed to hope? I still think a master system, because its the only one that could be produced at a low enough cost. Sega did a survey a few months ago (in Japan) about what they should do next, and the Sega Saturn won….but flash memory in these devices is, from what Ive been told, the most expensive component. A saturn or dreamcast mini would have to come loaded with huge memory in order to hold just a couple dozen games, and that would raise the price very very quickly. After Genesis Mini 2, and the debacle with the PSX classic a few years ago, im not sure Sega would be willing to do that.
@creativecatproductions
@creativecatproductions Жыл бұрын
It is pretty odd that sega never created upgraded versions of their better master system games for Genesis. I think, at the time, they had a pretty narrow view of what home console games could even be, which is why so many of their early games for both the mega drive and master system were ports of arcade games. I think Revenge of Shinobi was the first Genensis game to really realize the potential of the Gensis as a home console. They took a popular Sega IP and gave it a unique twist that wasn’t just an arcade game. I guess phantasy star 2 is the best example of a genesis game directly improving upon a master system game, but at the same time, in some ways the master system original was the superior game. Also, they did attempt a sequel to Alex Kidd on the Genesis, but it was, again, in some ways inferior to the original. But the number of times they went in reverse, and developed a Genesis game(or arcade game) for the master system was baffling….did we really need eswat for the master system? Or moonwalker? Or sonic? It was so weird! I would have loved to see an upgraded sequel to golden axe warrior for the genesis. Or master of darkness? It would have been awesome!

Hmm...I disagree with your assessment on the Master System in 1989. The Master System's presence did not end in 1989 in the US. I would say it greatly improved over previous years as Sega took over distribution rights from Tonka. I remember how hard it was to find Master System games for sale until that final year. That all changed when Sega started pushing their Powerbase Converter for the Genesis. I went from having 5 Master System games from 1986-1988 to 8 in 1989. Not only were they far more plentiful in '89 but they were all sold for considerably less than they ever had before (minus Phantasy Star). What's funny is I got a Powerbase Converter a couple of days after getting my Genesis in '89. At the time I swore games sounded and looked better while using the Powerbase Converter over my original hardware (I was very wrong). I actually finally found the first Phantasy Star because of the Converter. By 1990 however, the Master System was well and truly dead. I wish I would have bought more SMS games before they were gone. Lesson learned as whenever a console is about to die I jump all over it.

SegaSammy’s priority seems to ship at the tip of the scale. One moment they do acknowledge their old hardware that house some gems. The next moment, suddenly it’s more about resorts and wanting to be number 1(which, number 1 in what?). It’s likely possible with the purchase of Rovio, the mobile push they can gain for their Japan branch will be their next “Classic Console” persay to slap their old IPs to see what happens. I could be wrong, but so far the only large pluses I see come out of the company is from their non-gaming ventures. @@creativecatproductions Considering what I have seen, this looks like a very safe product from Sega in-house to cash in in the multimedia audience and general public. Just a return on their investments while dipping their toes in the water for the 30th time. For a Contemporary fan, they’re probably screaming out of their minds and defending anything any validity people have. As for gaming fans like me, this feels boring and safe, a lot to ask for 60 dollars. But I don’t matter, Sega already has enough of a audience who will accept and eat whatever is thrown to them thanks to one single fan who changed the design of Movie Sonic. It’s mind boggling, like something you couldn’t believe. The only reason Sammy is holding onto Sonic despite bad management is it’s their only kid friendly image to their names. Without it, they wouldn’t be seen as modern time game company to kids.

Erm, so we have four games from the last four years of the console's life in Europe...😂😂😂😂😂 Americans don't really get the Master System. Even when they try really really hard.

Well, I was pretty up front about the fact that I wanted to focus on the console from a more North American and Japanese perspective. Also, I wanted to avoid Game Gear ports, which dominated the European and Brazilian Master System market later on. I’m not as interesting in Master System games deep into the era of the SNES and Mega Drive. I’m more interested in that glorious moment that it was a real contender for “the best current technology”. You know what I mean? Thanks for watching Dude! 😎 Or cheers! 🍻

@@creativecatproductions I appreciate that but really the North American experience of the console wasn't anywhere near the best experience. You're artificially limiting yourself to an inferior experience. Don't get me wrong, it's a good list pre 91 but it's cutting out nearly half the games on the system including a plethora of the best and most technically impressive titles. The point about Game Gear "ports" is a bit spurious. Your assumption appears to be that the MS was a secondary system to the GG, which is completely false. The MS was the more popular system and MS games outsold GG games worldwide by a considerable margin. The year the console died in America, it had a major rebirth in the rest of the world with the launch of the Master System 2 - and Sega were very serious about supporting it. Many of the games you call GG ports are actually MS games ported to the GG. The systems were so similar and it's hardly fair to say these aren't MS games. Moreover, games like Aladdin, Lion King and Batman Returns, etc. aren't cut down versions of 16 bit games, they're unique 8 bit games (often made by different developers) and some of the best games on the system. And seriously, no Asterix! It's a nice list as far as it goes, but really doesn't give a fair representation of the console. Still appreciate the video and your response.

@markchambers3833 I concede that a lot of those very late titles were very impressive…..for like 1987….but very few people in my neck of the woods would have even known those titles existed because virtually everyone was playing games on an entire new level of depth and artistic expression. Im not suggesting that the Master System was secondary to the Game Gear, I’m only pointing out that the limited markets still in effect after 1991 mostly played games ported from the GG to the Master System. True, the GG was wasn’t as globally popular as the Master System….but in 1991 it was a living console with SEGA doing lots of development on that product and, really, in the end, they were about on par. Asterix IS one of the best Master System games, for sure! But it fell outside of my criteria for this list given its late release and regional exclusivity. I had to narrow it down. I love that game though

@@markchambers3833 what you say about Aladdin is true too. It almost made the list because it is a great Aladdin game. It was simultaneously developed for both the master system and the game gear by Sims. It had a prince of persia vibe. Its better than the Genesis game, which I have never thought much of.

😢@@creativecatproductions This is precisely what I mean when I say Americans don't "get" the Master System. That's not me trying to be nasty, just a sort of neutral observation. The Master System was a living console in 1991. It was a living console for sure as late as 1994. The Master System was selling way more units than the Game Gear in Europe - indeed if you look at sales figures, you'll likely find that the peak sales of the Master System were between 1991 and 1994. You assume that the MS was dead because it was discontinued in the USA. And you assume the Game Gear was Sega's focus, because it was being sold (and moderately popular) in the USA. The truth is quite different: the MS remained a key part of Sega's worldwide strategy until 1994 as their line's budget option. In the UK alone it was shifting millions of units and Sega were fully committed to supporting it. As such, more than half the games on the system were made after it was discontinued in America. Maybe the solution is to have two versions of your proposed MS Mini. A US version, along the lines you propose - that is to say, a limited version with half the games missing; - and a Rest of the World version, with all the games available, that actually represents what everyone else experienced. This would be sad, as you guys missed out on the greatest 8 bit console first time round. Wouldn't a Master System mini be the ideal opportunity to correct this? Why would you want to pass that up? Don't get me wrong, you've put a lot of effort into this and what's here is worth looking at. But it's nowhere near the best of what the system offers and that's because you've chosen to artificially limit yourself.
