Sega Genesis Mini 2 review: How Sega ruined the greatest mini console ever made with censorship

On October 27th Sega Sammy released a sequel to their Sega Genesis Mini console, based around the form factor of the Genesis Model 2 from 1992. In so many ways this new mini console is a major improvement. It has 61 games, as opposed to 40, it has Sega CD games, a much better interface, and an incredible selection of quality deep cut titles that grants access to some of the best 16 bit games ever made. It’s wonderful, and the quality of the emulation is impeccable.
At the same time, however, SEGA has decided to cut an entire level out of Bare Knuckle III, the Japanese version of Streets of Rage 3. They have done this without informing their fans. It’s not advertised or talked about anywhere. They just went ahead and did it. The reason for this was most likely to get around a boss character named Ash, who was represented as a stereotypical leather clad homosexual. This character was so controversial in 1994 that he was removed from the US version of the game. Censorship was never the right approach to this peculiar design choice by SEGA, and it is not the right approach now.
What else could be arbitrarily cut from the games of the Sega Genesis Mini 2? So far it seems like just this one thing. But SEGA needed to be more transparent with this decision. For me, when I think of the genre, I immediately think of Truxton. It was one of those early Genesis games that define the console for me. I was never a Sonic guy. The Mode button for the regular Genesis was for changing from 6 to 3 button setups because some of the earlier games only worked with the 3 button controller.

I hate to do it, but I have to disagree on the G2 design hate. Perhaps it’s nostalgia of my own, but I think it’s the best looking of the three main designs. The G1 is definitely the best hardware-wise. It’s hard to deny that, but I find it bulky, and I think the asymmetry of it bugs me a bit. I think the G2 was nice, much smaller, more symmetrical. I recently found your channel and watched a few of your videos. What I saw made me subscribe and I absolutely love this video! This is the best G2 review I have seen yet, and I have watched quite a lot of these. I have both Genesis minis and I like the second one more than the first. Not to say the first was bad by any means. I just like the improvements on the mini 2 with the navigation and like that there is more games than the mini 1. I am in my mid forties and never got a Genesis back in the day. My parents wouldn't get me one because I had a Commodore 64. I played my friends plenty though, and love the memories.....

I actually set the mode button to 3 seconds, mainly because a few games in this collection use the mode button during gameplay. Granted, it's a very small amount (I think it's only 2), but I'd rather not changed the settings everytime I wanna play these games.

I like them both but for English speakers I personally think the Sega CD is the best….unless you’re main focus is shooters. Then the PC Engine CD is best. I personally prefer the Sega CD however. You can get snatcher, final fight, sonic, lunar, popful mail, etc. The turbo cd had Ys, which is good, but it has some amazing shooters like gate of thunder….and it’s region free.

John, if you really want to hear Yuzo Koshiro's best work, check out the Etrian Oddysey series soundtracks, my personal recommendation is Etrian Odyssey III. The whole soundtrack is FM synth, apparently composed on a PC-88 computer. Etrian Odyssey's music will change your life.

Funny how 30 years ago they censored the character to make 1 side of the political aisle happy...then 30 years later they censor the same exact character to make the other side of the aisle happy. It's funny and it's sad at the same time. People of both camps need to not be so sensitive, it's just a goofy cartoon character in a game, and I def. see how it matches the goofy characters streets of rage often had, it fit the game. If you can load extra backup ROMs on it you can fix a lot of these issues. You can load the real version of bare knuckle 3, and also add Sonic 2 and 3 which definitely should have made it onto the system. That + me personally would want to load streets of rage 1 and 2 on, as well as golden axe 1. The original genesis mini isn't made any longer, it's not competition. Why remove those games? Maybe the licensing agreement ran out, IDK.

For me, the Sega Genesis mini 2 is awesome. Imo it's arguably the best mini console made so far. Just bought one a couple weeks ago, and I am loving every minute of playing the games on it. I'm hoping there's a Saturn or Dreamcast mini in the future. Theoretically, they can follow the Playstation classic model by only having 20 games on either of those minis so that it can be cost effective.

I know their main issue would be the cost effectiveness, due to the fact that 3d games would take up way more memory, and would possibly need even better hardware than what is used on even the mini 2. That being said if they do go through with it, they can potentially sell alot of them if it is advertised correctly, has good games, and is accessible in stores.

I just don’t get Sega’s mentality on making things difficult to access. If people want to buy a product worth investing in, wouldn’t you want to be as accessible and reliable at all times? They really have relied a lot on their retro success. Especially the Mega Drive. The Sega Ages team, honestly, has been one of the best things they’ve had going. The ports on the switch and 3ds were fairly spectacular. Sadly, I think it’s been dissolved after Rieko Kodama passed away (she was in charge of it). I wondered why they said it was disbanded but, now that we know Kodama unexpectedly passed away, I think we know the reason. I’d love to see Sega do a broader take on their retro catalogue. Seriously, as good as this is, I hope they stop with the mini consoles. Sega seems like they have mostly given up on western gamers outside of Sonic. Thanks for watching dude! 😎

@@creativecatproductions Well you know SegaSammy’s mentality, bombs in Japan and they ‘correct’ the mistakes. Frontiers only sold a bit above 46,000 in Japan so far, even if the Kishimoto said that he is happy that the fans voted for them in the game awards. It’s very possible that another rift is about to form between the devs and corporate CEOs. As for the western parts, Sega just opened a new office in the west with Atlus West and RGG studios. HOWEVER, considering that Atlus is continuing to milk P5, that is a sign that P6 isn’t even conceptionlized at all. So they’re really hell bent on Nostalgia, Multiplatform and this Super Game strategy. Also NFTs, forgot to mention that.

It's not the First time that kind of Character was in a beat em up either.That was Konami's Arcade game Vendetta a Sequel to Crime Fighters. Though in that game along with the Dogs they well grab your legs as attack and was removed outside japan and was world wide on the Arcade Archives versions the only console version of this game. Yet Arcade Archives did not Remove the same enemy type in a Fantasy themed game called Vandyke by UPL but they only attack you with claws in that but stick out even more. A Arcade Run and Gun game called Charlie Ninja has one has a boss along with all the Snes Go Go Ackman series which was based off a small manga by the creator of Dragon Ball. Though half of cast in games like Pit Fighter dress no diffrent and no one ever complained about that so who knows.

Herzog Zwei is an early Genesis game and used the 3-button controller. The controls in that game are surprisingly easy to learn, though the menu’s take a little getting used to. The tutorial that SEGA included is great though!

So it's been several months since the Mini 2 was released and not only is the Mini 2 still available but it's been discounted for the past two weeks. Whatever we think of the Mini 2 and its lineup and quality, I have to think this shows Sega didn't handle this properly. I don't know if it's the $20+ on shipping, the complete absence of the Mini 2 on store shelves or people people in the States being that bothered by the difference in the CD lineup that the we got or maybe people are just tired of the Genesis and wanted something different but this feels disappointing and if Sega was upset the Mini 1 didn't do better I can't imagine they're pleased with the Mini 2. I also feel extra bummed on this because I can't imagine Sega is coming out with a Master System Mini when they can't even sell out a limited run of Genesis Minis.

I think you’re right. This failed and it’s probably killed any chance of a master system mini. I think it was way too expensive and niche. The game library is genuinely awesome and it’s a big improvement over the original Genesis mini which I am pretty lukewarm to, but at the same time the library was obscure (great but obscure) and it didn’t have key Sega cd titles. It seems like Sega busted the bank to make this too. Going as far as they could go, but the mini console trend seems to have come to a quiet close. Bummer for us, because that’s like the bulk of our channel views 😝 Retro mini consoles. Oh well! We’re editing a huge video about the master system anyway

@@creativecatproductions well, 20+ years later at least Sega is consistent in they continue to do poorly when making business decisions in the US 🙂 I agree with all your points and read how Sega basically made this at the most expensive point they could have with components supply and some other factors. I like what they put out in a lot of ways (though still disappointed in others) but just the price. With shipping, this sucker is over 50% more than the first. That's nuts! So I think that might be the biggest issue and instead of seeing the price as the problem I think they'll conclude the mini market is dead. It's a shame because I think Nintendo is also done even though they slightly teased possibilities for N64 and GBA consoles but they seem content to just sell their ridiculously overpriced old school controllers with some decent games on their online platform. Maybe Sega will finally deal with Evercade and release some Master System games that way? Though that's probably just wishful thinking. I look forward to your Master System video.

As a part of the original Genesis Mini release, in Japan, SEGA did put out a miniature replica of the SEGA CD to put beneath the Genesis Mini. They also created a 32X that could sit on top. It was all purely cosmetic though, and you had to import it. They actually released a similar SEGA CD model for this new one as well, modeled after how the Genesis Model 2 and SEGA CD model 2 could be set next to each other, side by side. I didn’t hate the game list the way everyone else seemed to. I thought it was pretty close to capturing the essence of the PSX. However, I thought having versions of games on there for PAL frame rates instead of NTSC, was just an unforgivable oversight. Also, they needed to include controllers with analog sticks.

The reason why the PlayStation classic didn’t have analog controllers because when the PlayStation launched in 1994 the controllers had no analog sticks the dual analog controller wasn’t released until 1997 with the DualShock the following year

It depends. I can't speak for everyone, but I'm relatively young; and didn't experience the Sega Genesis at the height of its popularity. So both the Genesis mini 1 and 2 have allowed me to enjoy alot of retro games that were before my time. Furthermore, I'm a University student, so the portability of mini's for travel, it's HD connection, the cost effective library of games, etc; is way better to have in my case than to use the original hardware, or to use a subscription based service like the one on the Nintendo Switch.

Those are definitely advantages. If you have a second controller, the two VS mode for Puyo Puyo Tsu is extremely fun with friends. My family and I play that most of all.

I said it before Sega is a stupid company .!! All sega had to do was included all the games from the previous mini with the games they added on here. And scour KZbin and see there is certain games that needed to be on here.!! They leave out too many games.! And pick the worst ideas . Sega could have goggles genesis best 40 best 50 and get those titles on the damn thing.! 🤷🏾‍♂️

There are a lot of fascinating deep cuts here though. Not necessarily the most well known or popular, but some very high quality games that will surprise you. I personally think this is a great list of games.

I see what you’re saying, but honestly this mini console, here, is much stronger than the snes classic. The snes classic is close to flawless, in terms of its game library, but it is also safe, predictable, and conventional. It’s also mostly available through other means. What makes the Turbografx mini and Genesis mini 2 both so great are their attempts to provide an assortment of games that are, on the one hand, of a high quality, but also unconventional and under appreciated. This includes M2s trick of introducing lots of new games. Unfortunately, censorship is the issue here!

I think you’re probably referring to Ash from Streets of Rage 3? I think he’s supposed to represent a member of the leather subculture, which rallies around a disntinct, externally recognizable pattern of costume and behavior. Im not sure the moral problem from the original version of the game is with “stereotyping” as much as it is mockery. Leather men are a self stereotyping identity group. Without stereotyping they wouldnt even be able to identify each other or participate in their own subculture….which is one of grave depravity, including a large amount violence, human degradation, and physical abuse. That being said, I think taking the leather man character, Ash, and then sort of implicitly just making fun of him is worse than including him in the game. Really, the biggest mistep was the mocking music. But of course its also possible Sega was making fun of what they thought of gay men in general and not specifically the leather subculture? Im not sure. But what I think is much worse is censorship of completed works of art from the past in order to satisfy whatever outrage exists in the present. Are we going to censor or ban Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain because it contains content that makes some people uncomfortable or uses stereotypes of southern people from the 19th century? I hope not, because not only is it one of the greatest novels in American literature but to reject the book on these grounds would be to miss the point. Obviously there is little artistic or philosophical merit to what Streets of Rage 3 does with Ash but, in principle, I am opposed to all forms of censorship, because if one person is able to remove or destroy what they regard as impious or mean or rude, whats the prevent everyone and anyone from destroying ANY particular work of art for just any kind of inconvenience? Whats going to be left standing, you’ll find, is a absolutely nothing because someone will always have a reason to hate it. Thats a less thoughtful, noble, and beautiful world….a world afraid to be challenged by ideas and expressions that diverge from your own. Its the end of culture itself. Thanks for watching dude! 😎
