For more than 20 years Jeanne Sullivan has navigated the investment world as a venture capitalist, fielding bullies, bozos, and buffoons all the way to the top. In this TEDx talk she shares her secrets for how and when to stand up, step up, and speak up. Sullivan recounts the trials and tribulations of her career with wisdom and humor, reminding us all that when the going gets tough you don’t have to be nasty, but you do need to be sassy.
Jeanne M. Sullivan is an Advisor, Speaker, Investor, and Connector, but her favorite title is Chief Inspiration Officer. Sullivan is a co-Founder of StarVest Partners, a venture capital firm in NYC. Prior to her 20 years in the investment community, she gained her operating chops with the likes of AT&T and Bell Labs. A "voice” for women, Jeanne serves on the Global Board of Trustees of Astia, funding high growth women entrepreneurs, the Women’s Leadership Board at Harvard Kennedy School and is an Athena Entrepreneur Fellow for Barnard College. The New York Hall of Science recently honored Jeanne for inspiring girls and women in science and technology (STEM) fields.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I appreciated her message but she doesn't seem to understand the true nature or effects of workplace bullying (abuse). Most targets get out of it by getting fired or leaving. The bullies usually survive. Whistleblowers are not appreciated in corporate america.

Unfortunately so so common to have toxic people promoted to manager. Makes me wonder how long I’ll be able to put up with corporate life. If you're being yelled at or harassed at work, that's basically the same as a physical assault. Someone doesn't have to touch you to physically affect your mind. We have the right of self defense. Then the challenge is to figure out a creative way to turn the tables on your abuser... Because if they aren't put on notice, they'll just keep assaulting people.

That's what happened to me. As soon as I uttered a word to speak up for myself, I was fired. And blamed for things I literally just didn't do. It's not right, because now I have to figure out how to get references, how to start all over again, because I was trying to break into a new field so I could support me and my one year old daughter. Now I will have to try all over again, and me and my little girl have to suffer the losses. Nothing ever gets done about it.

Be assertive with bullies. Be loudly polite. Stand tall. Perfect posture. Look down your nose at them and come out with a one liner you've rehearsed. That worked for me. After that I never gave the bully an ounce of my time or even a glance. Pretended that she didn't matter and showed her how happy I was whenever she was in the wings.

@@angrytranssexual8226 this is true, but also be careful with this method. Some 'victims' are not victims at all but two-faced sycophants, though the face that they show you is the one they want you to see. And some victims are confused, going thru a form of PTSD caused by these parasites that victimized them to begin with. They then exhibit Stockholm syndrome behaviour, and inadvertently will turn on you. And the rest of the enablers will throw you under the bus with little persuasion from the bully(ies)'s team. Be safe.

What I'm trying to do is learn more about psychology, HR and how to think and respond to my manager as if I was an attorney. It's rough but I think it's a good way to learn how to deal with these people. Unfortunately they are not uncommon, if you learn how to deal with them correctly then you will be unstoppable.

I’m choosing to learn more about the psychology of bullies and how to respond and handle them too. Unfortunately, I’ve tried standing up for myself, being quiet, being kinder than normal, trying to be friends with them, and nothing has worked, so I think keeping to myself, and only interacting when I have to is the way to go, but interacting with them in a professional way like an attorney would, so that I don’t add any fuel to the fire. I’m also getting in the habit of documenting everything that happens because as I’ve found the only thing I can do is protect myself, and choosing how I respond and documenting are some ways to do that. This will also protect against gaslighting.

I work in a field where I’m the only female, my coworkers try and are successful at clouding my judgment to make me lash out and act in a gotta watch my back type of atmosphere and unfortunately it’s a group effort. The upper management hasn’t been supportive the whole way because everyone says the same thing. I feel I am being targeted at work. When I follow the steps of procedures I always get told don’t worry about it. So I’m working with people who are jealous and what want my position? Even when we all come together as a team and successfully complete the task that was given, and still they speak Amongst their selves telling each other why did I even help.. I didn’t help to look better I helped the greater good.

It was traumatic to listen to but instead of confronting them I started dropping key words and phrases they had used that id recorded and I did this when in subsequent conversations with them. The next recording they started turning on each other accusing one of talking to me and telling me what they were saying! Eventually it stopped and they found out. Ive outlasted many autocratic managers just by not quitting and doing what i know my job is. Everyones situation is different, so you gotta find whats right for yourself, if you end up getting fired theres not much difference than walking out so be it, but you can always try to apply elsewhere. Also communication is normally a root in issues at work, maybe her expectations are different than yours so to come to an agreed upon goal could solve issues.

I refer to it as community harassment/ stalking.. I found out that this is occurring throughout the woeld.. its been a nightmare of a life..Its similar to "workplace bullying"..I dont know what lies have been told .but from one day to the next..adter moving to a new town.. people at the stores who were friemdly.. began to give me looks of disgust and anger..I didnt understand..because i havent done anything wrong to anyone orplace or thing.. and everywhere in neighborhood ..people at the shopping center, too have been rude in on way or another.. has been ever since..Ike wish there eas a warning .. that mightve prevented this from occurring..because after all of the b.s. and repettitiveness.. all they have to do is say a certain word or phrase or sound.. and i ende up reacting in a negative way.. when im strong enough to ignore it.mthen i end up feeling a frequency going through my body.. espwcislly while in my room.. anything ive mentioned.. took awhile for it to unfold..for me to realize that it was actually happening.. it wasnt in my head. ( this ia a tiny fraction of the abuse that is influcted upon me.. :-(.. How can a poo erson deal with it?? ( i might not have worded my long message properly..)

So what's the difference between working in IT and dealing with bullies, bozos and buffoons? I don't know either.

Did it! It didn't work. Only thing that worked was going over their heads immediately, effecting their reputation before they sullied yours. Then they knew that you would "get them in trouble" the one thing they feared the most. Exit if possible, because it won't get any better. How many times did she bust at a table? Probably more times then she was the big winner. Let the higher up know this is why you won't be returning.

There are the psycho narcissists and their flying monkeys. So if you're going to stand up, it's to a crowd. Never the less, it's best to die standing rather than on your knees as a coward.

Loud, exaggerated sniffing and women hiking up their pants, with a hip shake. Are these things code for something? The sniffing? How is that interpreted? The childish pulling up pants really high and shaking the hips...how is that to be understood? Some say it is just people choosing a random mannerism or phrase and repeating it to make a person feel uncomfortable and agitated. Sort of like an older child teasing the younger in grade school class. Am I close?

***Warning*** your results may vary*** Notice Ms. Sullivan spoke up when she became a CEO or was on the "Board. " I don't recommend anyone follow Ms. Sullivan's advice in an entry level position, especially if you need the job to pay bills and support your family 👪. These CEOs tell some tall tales but I bet they keep their mouth shut if they were low level employees. Ms. Sullivan's words seem inspiring but be forewarned..actions have consequences.
