hey Alec = I did harvest bark still living tree but heavy damaged, or already dying very old and big trees. I got barks rows 8 inches wide and 2 feet long. It is hard job . I use two side cut with chain saw ( cheap Amazon battery powered 4 inches or better 6 inches chainsaw), follow top and bottom cut for separation and next I used pry-bar first I run it under bark and next I started from top to bottom slowly prying it off the tree. I started one side and next I move to opposite one ... After initial prying from both side I return to first side and develop more pressure till bark slope will fall off tree. It is base on experience how much damage make on tree - but when tree is dying or freshly fall down it is no issue. When tree is longer down you can find the bark start to de gradate with lot of rotting parts and cracks. One tip more - I spent lot of time in bush for hunting, scouting or shooting, but all the time checking surrounding trees with binocular and this way I made my private inventory of bark material for future ( now I have plenty - still busy with another duties and activities ). Thanks for your great job and sharing your knowledge
