One thing that taught me about self-control is delayed gratification, especially with things like sex, entertainment, music, indulgence of a favorite snack, watching a favorite TV show or movie, etc. Moderation is key in enjoying anything in life, and when you practice self-control you will start enjoying things even more because you deny yourself from time to time of the things you really love, gaining a deeper appreciation of them. Plus, it will prevent you from becoming addicted to things that normally are enjoyable but could potentially become harmful if you over-indulge or abuse them. Really loved the positive & peaceful vibe at the end of the video, by the way!

I recovered from 11 years of eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia) with "accidental" intermittent fasting (meaning that I didn't consider this practice as a diet or a lifestyle shift) The result was a total recovery and my relationship with both food and my body has been perfect ever since. Lately I lost appetite and haven't been eating much and the former me would have fallen into anorexic behaviours, probably followed by bulimic crises after a time. But I've been just great. I have the biggest energy and mental clarity before I actually eat my first meal of the day (I usually eat only once). This practice taught me patience, self control and self consciousness. I hope my message helps anyone who struggles with eating disorders or have terrible eating habits.

Your part about "being content with what we have while being less dependent on what we think we need" is very true. My road bicycles I ride with are not the latest top-of-the-line machines. They are 10 and 20 years old with 10 speed gearing. Yet I consistantly leave very good riders behind or at least keep up with them and they have the latest equipment. These words of the Stoics are very wise but like any wisdom can be problematic to implement. Why am I complaining, when a very busy guy like Marcus Aurelius, who had much on his plate, lived the Stoic life? I never lived the meditative life until now at 73 yr old. As I look back at all the wisdoms, like Henry David Thoreau's, "most men lead lives of quiet desperation," it is hard not see my life as a workaholic was programed into me by nature and nurture. I can talk about the rationalization of responsibility for duty, honor, family, and country but in the end it comes down to how we judge ourselves. I have finally come to a realization that the only truth each of us can achieve is that of the self and even Buddhism tells us that is, "anatta."

I find stoicism really hard. I can do all the external stuff. I fast regularly, take cold showers in winter, I train physically hard and I'm not attached to material wealth. However, it's the devils in the mind that I struggle with. I've been through a series of abusive relationships that really tested me. It's a constant struggle to maintain a state of calm. Sometimes I win but sometimes I lose and when I lose I go off the rails. I drink smoke and am crippled with depression, anger and rage. The rational part of my brain sees it but I'm overwhelmed by my emotions. The words of great stoics don't cut the mustard when I'm in those states. Like a storm I have to ride it out. I fear it may destroy me in the end.

I've been struggling with overwhelming emotions too and I started reading dialectical behavioural therapy workbook for the past few weeks and it's helping me understand myself and my emotions better. Try reading books and implement the methods listed as much as you can. Once you start doing the inner work, you'll see the difference in the way you react to things. And don't worry, it might not seem like it but we can do anything we set our minds to. We are stronger than we give ourselves credit.

There are needs of the body often expressed in emotions & feelings There are needs of the mind often expressed in thoughts & will You should not ignore either but ultimately the 'YOU' must be the arbiter. You'll find especially if you have allowed either or both to have control at different times in your life that it's the middle ground that's best. Don't ignore the needs of either but, don't let either control you. But together they make you what you are a 'human'. This is of course is easier said than done. Sometimes it takes a lifetime!

I find it funny how the stoics said it's within our nature to act virtuously when conveniently it's their definition of virtuous, there are plenty of people that naturally act in a manner contrary to that of the stoic because it is natural. The stoic mindset is one of the least natural mindsets you can have that has to be drilled into to fight off our natural urges to feel fully.
@JamesEscobar5 жыл бұрын
I support your views on stoicism and practice these beliefs myself. As a US Marine I have had to regularly endure up to 3 days of fasting for training and combat situations. I can confirm by the second day it fells more manageable, but in no way feels easy or blissful. Your body is constantly reminding you of your need for fuel, it hangs in the background and speaks louder at times. I also practice intermittent fasting on a daily basis because of an assortment of beliefs. Neither of these situations are simple, there is a definite difference in the way you feel properly fueling your body throughout the day and when you don't. Don't believe me, eat a sugary snack halfway through your day of fasting and notice how you feel. I have experimented with this several times to truly understand what is what in reference to fuel consumption (that is what food is). Im explaining all this because people who lecture on this topic always down play the constant difficulty with adopting this discipline. Starving your body even a little releases a myriad of chemicals telling you to stop what you are doing. You can not stop that. You can however control the urge, you can manage the discomfort and in time feel more comfortable with these sort of situations but it is never easy. There is always some sort of difficulty in forcing your body to so what it doesn't want to. I want anyone new to this to understand this so they don't feel they are not doing it right or failing in some way.

As I sat long enough, I knew I have a limited energy for now and that has to be channeled for activities that really needs me. I thanked the cat for reminding me to let go. The alternative would be to let it out and kill native wildlife. It's best to keep it inside. And slowly in europe laws are changing in banning cats from being 'outside cats'. they do unbelievable amounts of harm to ecosystems, and if I had my way, I would disencourage breeding cats and import most of them back to africa (yes, they are not genetically far enough from their ancestor to NOT survive this transition. They haven't been bred as long as dogs). The risk of having them has resulted in many exinct species... and they're not even useful for rodent control, there is no evidence that back it up. Which makes me cringe when I see people own barn cats, they are better off using rat traps And I'm saying this as a cat lover. But this is the best thing to do for nature's health in the long run. Either you keep your cat indoors, or continue harming the earth because of the feelings you're projecting on them.

But we love fighting in the bottom of the boat for the crumbs... Yeah, I think he's conflating poverty with what it's like to fast for a couple of days. Pretty comical in that absurd, dark way I like👻

Have all the "powerful" and rich individuals stolen what they have? Is every rich man crooked? Or, is it possible for a rich and powerful man to actually have earned that which he possesses? If so, why would we demand anything that we haven't earned ourselves, from a man who has?

Self control isn't an illusion, it's a constant and a distraction. It's not about whether or not you control yourself, of course you do (aside from events this like seizures). It's about what you do, the choices you make. You can choose not to eat for 72 hours or you could choose to eat, either way you make the choice. One choice isn't more self controlled than the other. It's more revealing to look at the reason, the antecedents and consequences of a choice or action rather trying to attribute it to something other than the self.
