Seneca | Why Worry About What Isn't Real? (Stoicism)

In a letter to his dear friend Lucilius, Stoic philosopher Seneca wrote: “There are more things, Lucilius, likely to frighten us than there are to crush us; we suffer more often in imagination than in reality.”
Chronic worriers tend to be more occupied by the future than by present circumstances. During the day, and even during the night, their thoughts wander in the mysterious realm of what’s yet to come, plotting, planning, and calculating on how to tackle an unfortunate fate that might rear its ugly head.
But even though they wish to control the future, they’ve never gone beyond the confines of the present. This is because the future doesn’t exist, except in our minds. We can’t live in the future, and we can’t predict it. Sure, we can plan for things that might come, but the present usually unfolds in different and often surprising ways.
Still, many of us fix our attention on the unknown and fantasize endlessly about how things that we can’t possibly predict will present themselves to us. Seneca observed this phenomenon in his friend Lucilius as well as in the people around him. He counterattacked this often tiresome and destructive stance towards the illusory domain of the future with Stoic reasoning, explaining why worrying about it is pointless, and advising us on what to do instead.
This video (Why Worry About What Isn't Real? | Seneca's Philosophy to End Worrying) explores Seneca’s antidotes to worry and groundless fears.

As a overthinker, I feel the pain and suffering of constantly living in fear and anxiety about a future that does not exist. I used to see it as preparation for a spontaneous event, but now I see it as a curse that has caused me more pain than any other human done to me. My wish is inner peace and this channel and many other similar channels have helped me over the years. Many thanks and best regards to all of you.

@@MindNow That's a great question. For me, I like to journal. I try to journal at least 15 minutes a day and while I'm journaling I allow myself to write whatever comes to mind. Empty life advice guru babble that attempts to validate itself. How to get through anything is key. If it would have to be through something that severely goes against your conscience, then you might get through life finally, over it,, but everybody eventually does, so that's not really helpful, except to people who say such things to comfort themselves. It is part of toxic positivity - a denial of undesirable emotions.

When I'm worrying incessantly at night, I imagine turning the light on in my room. It's simple and somehow has the power to change everything. It fills me with light and hope. And makes me feel a little silly for having, just moments before, dug into that cave of darkness so deeply. Another thing to do is to breathe in, count to 4, hold your breath for a count of 7, exhale for a count of 8. Do this about 4 or 5 times and you will realize that you have lost that focus on worrying about a particular thing. You might even be able to get back to sleep!

I absolutely resonate with the part about trusting our own instincts. I've had to let go of so many people in my life as they were trying to control my decisions and the way I live. So far, the greatest experiences I've had were times that I listened to myself. Of course, I was open to hear others opinions especially people close to me and care for me. However, there is a boundary. And I just cannot live their life for them. Thank you for this! xx

I used to have anxieties about the future either, but then I realised, I was just wasting my time. I've been training myself to focus on the present moment. A little bit of Stoic Philosophy does help me in the process, giving some common sense to my senseless brain in the midst of anxiety. You have such beautiful content in your channel, and I hope more people could be inspired by this. Though I must remind myself and anyone reading this, that stoicism not trying to offer absolute solutions to any kind of problems, sometimes we have to care, and sometimes, pain is gain. Using this philosophy to avoid pain is not going to do any good, instead, use this as a guide to learn from pain, learning how to be good at feeling bad.

You shouldnt feel sad that your fiancee left, if you see a better future ahead you probably might think, it was the best thing she left. Fear will not stop you from duying, but it sure will stop you from living! Enjoy life. Dont take it too seriously. Be attached but able to let go. Be like water or like a falling cat relaxed and nimble And never forget death doesnt exist without life. Dark without light. We are all at once. So be in the present and focus

It seems so simple to stop worrying, especially if the worry is in our minds and the object of it is imaginary...Maybe the fact that it's so obviously simple makes it so difficult.

There a lot of simple things, but are attained not so easily, but that’s the beauty of it. Nothing on this planet is easy, it’s the challenge that keeps it interesting 😊

The problem is that most people fear what hurt them most, i.e., "I don't ever want that to happen to me again." But its not a conscious thing and most people absolutely don't want to talk about the thing that hurt them most in their life. So its not so simple as choosing to live in the present

Agree, there's no true method or universal fix. As someone said "one persons food, is another persons poison". Be generous and patient with yourself. Talk, don't talk, be weak or strong fearful or corageous. I want to be more honest as you

I believe we worry because there is still a root problem to solve or analyze within our thoughts. I've spent a lot of time in worry and with anxiety over the last few years and I've realized its okay to "worry" because we worry when there is still something yet to complete, and deep in our mind we sense the problem overwhelmingly but its still in a haze. Open that conversation with yourself find solutions where you can, spend time overlooking all possibilities to find where the worry stems from, then return to the present moment. Allow yourself to worry in meditation or focused thought then find a way back to the present. I have realized that worry and anxiety may be misunderstood and are sort of a human superpower that helps pave the way to a better future. We must pay attention to those warnings and filter out the fear to see the solution. We worry when we're not ready, prepare yourself to be ready and the worry will fade and the present will become clearer. In that sense i can agree and disagree with this outlook of worry.

Hey man thank you so much for this video. It really helped me to dispel an age old fear of mine of worrying about the future. I tend to obsess over it but in reality nothing bad every really happens, our minds habit of catastrophizing any event is what causes the suffering but in reality things are not at all that bad. In fact they are quite good! Stay in the moment, enjoy it's fruits. don't worry about the future.

A few months ago there was this thing I was very worried about. It hadnt happened yet but something inside of me was still worried about it ever happening. Well, fast forward a couple of months and that thing did ended up happening. Human intuition is stronger than most people realize. I know my experience is mine alone but yeah, this event just helped me getting more anxious about the future... trust your gut people

... Beautiful and useful, on a very important subject. Thank you so much, Mister E. And I love your tasteful and artfully done background music. The volume is good and low.... Terence McKenna related how an old time Chinese scholar studied the I Ching all his life. At the end, he concluded that it said one thing: it is preposterous to worry.

My parents used to have a little poster on their wall when I was growing up: “There are only two things to worry about- Either you are well or you are sick. If you are well, there is nothing to worry about, But if you are sick, there are only two things to worry about- Either you will get well or you will die. If you get well, there is nothing to worry about, But if you die, there are only two things to worry about- Either you will go to heaven or hell. If you go to heaven, there is nothing to worry about. And if you go to hell, you’ll be so damn busy shaking hands with friends, you won’t have time to worry!”
