what if what we worry is not unreal. Like we if you failed to achieve a target in sales job you are fired. Even though you may another job there is no certainty that you won't achieve it there. O'SSÉIN - Master Your Mind With Me I don’t really understand the part in which Epictetus sent his student home. The video said that “him coming to class was a right thing to do” but in another part, it stated that the lesson is that we shouldn’t enforce ourselves when we are exhausted. So what was Epictetus’ intention? Was he really willing to send the student home? Or did he just want the student to keep coming to class even amidst illness? May you clarify that part to me? Thank you so much !!!!

Meaning that only the students that take ancient greek get to know about Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and some Stoics, and they have to memorize most stuff, therefore a lot of students don't really learn neither are fascinated by philosophy, they think of it as another mandatory subject I personally had my inner search about philosophical questions and now I see my thoughts portrayed in writings from thousands of years ago It's so sad that we study it as "Ancient Greek" and not as a worldview, a lesson for everyone And so sad that young people have such knowledge available, yet have stupid mentalities

What strikes me most of the whole video was the phrase "we are not entitled to a good parent, just a parent" that's so true. I have found myself thinking about this over and over again. You'll see.... My father was an alcoholic, he was married to my mother, then he left us and had an affair with another woman (he had a daughter with her), he came back with my mom that's when he fall into alcoholism and die soon after, he died when I was 11. I always felt so unfortunate, helpless and miserable watching the families of my friends, they seemed to have everything they wanted (I mean about love and economic resources) and I was lacking of all of that things, just cause my father was weak and stupid. I always felt these way, such a deeply anxiety... I was intended to have a good father, right? I was a good girl, I deserved it... I still think I deserved a better father but... That's not how life works, life is unexpected and unfair. You just have to keep going with whatever you found... So... I will cherish this phrase and keep it in mind.... "we are not entitled to a good parent, just a parent"

*How to keep a calm mind regardless of what world throws at us:* *1) Act in accordance with nature:* We should do what the current situation asks from us. Sickness and death are part of nature. We all go some day. *2) Watch your judgement:* Anxiety isn't caused by environment, it is caused by the position to take to watch the environment. We are not necessarily entitled to all good things in life. It is the way of nature. *3) Focus less on things out of your control:* We can only influence most things in life not totally control them. We should focus on our thoughts and emotions. Develop a healthy indifference towards outside events (Amor Fati).

First of all, I feel attacked by the parent section, since that’s something I’m struggling with. Lol. In all seriousness though, I love your videos. Please don’t stop making them. I needed to come across this video at this time. I believe in signs and the universe putting things, even people and apparently KZbin videos, on your path for a reason. I had an emotional breakdown for the 2nd time in my life taken place from last night(Thursday) until 2 this afternoon. To attempt to make a long story/post short, too late, Epictetus was completely correct. We DO NOT have control over certain things; most of everything that happens, the bad, the horrible, even the detrimental, I, personally, just take a deep breath (A literal deep breath) grab a pen and paper and figure my issue(s) out and keep it pushing. However, I’m in my 30s now, and the multitude of abuse I suffered from my family, mainly my mother, still haunts me. However, with always being in my head and active listening and a weird ass memory for painful personal events, I gained a complete and devastatingly thorough, understanding on my mommy issues, but the one thing I can’t do is let it go. I’m not entitled to a good parent, just a parent. A perspective I immediately soaked up in a split moment of mental clarity. My mind, my entire being instantly felt lighter. Thank you. Truly. Thank you. It’s time to move on. I thank her for doing what she has, weird I know, otherwise I wouldn’t be the man I am today. ❤️❤️❤️ Who would’ve thought, lol, a damn KZbin video would help me with the biggest, baddest, queen demon that exist in my life. 😂

Do not be stuck in the past and do not let it define your future. Be grateful to be alive to have a chance of turning it all around. Remember. You cannot change what happened nor the people around you. The only thing that you can change is today. Let it go with indifference. Anger, sadness, fear, anxiety, regret and all of your feelings are not in the outside world but inside of your own mind. Take control of it. Think of your mind like an orchestra that plays music... if the music is not happy, calm, or exciting then think of it as being just noise. And noise causes headaches.. All you need to do is to stop listening to it. We have a need to hold on to these negative feelings and toughts, for our brains are wired to keep us away from dangers and keep us alive, however negative emotions don't nourish, they poison and keep you stuck in situations that don't lead anywhere. They won't help you grow as a person. You can only succeed in anything if you're calm and relaxed.. so relax. As Confucius said: "We have two lives and the second one begins when we realize we only have one" Live. Trully.

Epictetus, Seneca, Cicero and others were extremely intelligent and great thinkers. They are called Philosophers, which of course means literally - "lovers of wisdom". Therefore, as every one, surely loves wisdom, ten every one can call himself a "philosopher", but obviously not of the same "caliber". However, I would like to remind to ALL that are so impressed with some remarkable and wise sayings by those great philosophers, that the wisest of them all - Socrates, summing up all the human wisdom in his famous and honest admission: - "I know that I know nothing". Another great ancient philosopher and mathematician - Pitagoras, who actually was the first who , when he was called a "wise" man, denied it, and used the word "philospher", saying that no one is wise, and that he is only the lover of wisdom - philosopher. Pitagoras has also said, that to philosophy - is to think about death. It is obvious, that thinking about death is the most important thing that the philosophers think about, as EVERYTHING in this world is very temporary, short lasting, ending in the inevitable death, and therefore - it is meaningless. That's why another great mind - Solomon has said at the beginning of his Book of Ecclesiastes, in the Bible: -- "It is useless, useless...Life is useless, all useless..." In other words, ALL this "wise" saying by ALL philosophers is just useless and amount to nothing of real value, including any riches and possessions, as WE and everything will soon end up in annihilation, back into nothingness.... So the question is: - Is there ANYTHING at all, that there is NOT useless?? Is there ANY purpose of life? Of course there is, but everyon, without making any effort, would like to be handed it on the platter... It will never be, without persistent searching for it. Therefore, let me give you a hint: - God said: "I will give them ONE purpose in life..". If you really want to know what it is, you will have to make effort to look for it, and you WILL find it, because it is also written: -- "Look and you will find". Unfortunately, nearly all people are worshiping Mammon and chasing pleasure which is their only purpose of life. (This are just thoughts of an ordinary old man).

I have tried to impart these ideals to others to no avail. I now just enact for myself on a daily basis. I no longer expend one precious moment in trying to help others in seeing the light.

Enchiridion, A very good book for the depressed and suicidal. It saved my mental state in time of severe negativity.

Yes, I agree. It's simple, direct and to the point. IMHO this is great for depressed people who often haven't got the energy to consume extensive and complicated texts.

Ever since the pandemic started I've been nothing but calm. Keeping informed with reliable info has helped a lot. Still I'm not really one to panic over anything as it is useless. Whatever happens will happen.
