Kurt Vile! You remind me of my stepfather, he was a young man who played guitar, who reminds me alot of you. He had the same hair, the same face and the smile and charm. A streetperformer who saw alot of love in his music. He came into my life at the age 6. I was an isecure kid with little love to my family, it changed everything. He brought me out in the woods, made tents out of blankets on warm summers far away from everything. He showed me love, and made me to the guy i am today. He took his life when i was 15 (now 26). Love to see your energy, because that is what he showed me. The energy to live my life, even tho everthing sometimes seems helpless Keep the music flowing, it's awesome!

And then I read all these comments and felt much better. I love the lyrics, the harmonies, the chord changes on the guitar, the drums, the rhythm, the background vocals, the video, the feeling of something so familiar and yet distant that it captures through the words and the music. Just brilliant.

Late September 2015. Fall had started, but the summer refused to go away, although the sunshine wasn't the same and I was about to embrace a intra-rail journey for a week around the country. This masterpiece was blasting all the time on my favourite radios and I was enjoying the threeling of being free and young. I didn't recognize myself at mirror, because I was discovering myself being a lonely travel. The song was a part of that journey, and really miss those days, every time I listen it.

Matthew McDaniel I've had this song on repeat and I've noticed some awesomely subtle things in the lyrics. One of my favorites : early in the song he says "Didn't recognize the MAN in the mirror". Then he later says "All he ever wanted was to be a man, but was a little to cute". Later in the lyrics he repeats the mirror line but says "Didn't recognize the BOY in the mirror". Such a great little detail.

Found this song on the radio today right after I found a new cowboy hat. The song resonated with me because I’ve “been” so many people in my 54 years. From being in bands like Brian Jonestown Massacre, Psychic TV, to being a beach bum, to starting a tech company, to currently caring for autistic men. I DID literally brush a stranger’s teeth today. Then I found my cowboy hat, then three wild mustangs walked right up to my autistic patient and myself as we listened to this song. One of those cosmic magic moments. Thanks for the song, Kurt. i realized i had depersonalization/derealization symptoms back in like 2018 and it's a very strange sensation when you finally have a term to put to the feeling and research more. luckily i started meditating and finding ways to manage more..and pretty sure that preemptive training in meditation back then was the only thing that got me through 2020 to now lol...sooo thank you dissociative disorder, i guess?

I've been suffering with it for a few months now after a stressful time. I thought I was just going crazy. It was pretty terrifying and I didn't dare tell anyone incase they thought I was losing my mind. Finally finding out what it is helped me so much and makes so much sense. Love this song even more now. I also started meditating and at times it has really helped me so much but I would always slip back into thinking I'm crazy, but now I've read all about depersonalisation and realising it's caused by anxiety I think it will happen less. Was there an incident that triggered yours?
@cole1710 Жыл бұрын
@@dts7824 Yeah feeling like you're going crazy and handling it alone is a very stressful situation lol. I was glad I finally opened up about it. I believe the situation that triggered it for me was my brother's death in 2016. There were a few other things going on too like an ugly breakup a few months before that, but my brother was the last straw for my mind then I think. Just went on autopilot for years after that until I finally could allow myself to deal with everything face-to-face. How about you, what was your biggest trigger?
@dts7824 Жыл бұрын
@@cole1710 I'm so sorry to hear about your brother. I was already having a stressful home life and I was round a friend's house and tried magic mushrooms for the first time, and was a pretty scary experience, then a few days later I had a really bad health scare that stressed me out even more, but luckily everything turned out ok in the end with that. It doesn't sound too bad in comparison to what you went through, but it really shook me up and my anxiety went through the roof.
@cole1710 Жыл бұрын
@@dts7824 I appreciate your condolences. Yes what is interesting is that I decided to take magic mushrooms for the first time after a friend gave me some..but I did them at home alone and that honestly was what cracked me open and got me to start accepting and confronting what I was going through mentally. Lots of crying hahaha, but good, healing crying. It is never a matter of whose trauma is worse, we all suffer here and there. I'm glad it seems like you've been doing better too! Hopefully now things are in a much better place for you. The world can be too much to handle a lot of times.
@dts7824 Жыл бұрын
@@cole1710 to be honest I had some really good experiences with the mushrooms, I just think we took way too much to the point that reality completely dissolved away haha. But towards the end of the trip I had a moment of the purest mental clarity I have every experienced. No thoughts at all, just complete contentment and awareness, it was incredible. Maybe if it had just been the mushrooms I would need ok, but trying to make sense of everything and then getting hit with a life threatening health scare was not what I needed at that time haha.

A couple of weeks back this song played on a radio station I had never listened to before. I just happen to hear some of it while scanning stations. I paused and listened to it for the first time. It stuck with me. I needed to hear it again. I kept googling pieces of the lyrics...at last I found it. Gonna go listen a trillion times and never lose it again.

I just discovered this song a few days ago, and wow is this song a work of art. I've had chronic head pain for about 10 years now leading to depression and dissociation, and this is just hitting home. The wonderful and hypnotic instrumentation captured me immediately, the lyrics were relatable, and then, like how each day just feels the same as the last, it repeats itself. And repeats itself, and repeats itself where time has no meaning. Brief changes here and there to provide a moment of self-awareness before fading back into a trance of more of the same. The song ends, each minute another day lost. I really appreciate this track and have added it to my playlists!

Both he and Adam of War on Drugs are great representatives of the enduring art and authenticty that has always been the "Philly music scene." Kurt deserves to get a Grammy next.
