Fun fact about what they're eating: Those are called "chocolate kisses" in germany, but they used to be called "negro kisses". Since the song is about fear mongering (and by extension about fear of foreigners) it might not be totally coincidental that they eat those. Bit of a stretch though, I know.

I am pretty sure they chose them on purpose. If you just think about how much controversy this name change brought up. You could easily imagine simular stuff around the world. In the US for example they changed some names of Sport clubs. And one can imagine that people go nuts because of that.

That's not a stretch at all. There is a Trump figure in the video, who is considered far right here in Germany. Also the colours red, white and black are associated with nazi's. In context with the 2 poc/refugee's the picture gets quite clear.

it's not a stretch, the song is about racism and fearmongering. the lyrics here translate "schwarzt man" as boogyeman, but i think "black man" it's more accurate. what fearmongering does to comunities (the video kind of shows as US, but don't think it's limited to just them) when you let a madman to speak his hate, in this case Til's character.

@@ionutgeanta8741 I actually think that boogeyman is the better translation. Obviously the meaning of Schwarzer Mann is intentional ambiguous, but I think that boogeyman is a more powerful translation because it’s a metaphor with more general criticism of the system. Of course it’s right to project the song on racism, however that doesn’t do justice to the message. It’s about all the things we‘re afraid of. On one day we kill black people because we‘re afraid of things we don’t know. Next day we kill nazis because we‘re afraid of decreasing peace and humanity in the world. Fear sadly rules nearly everything.

@@casinodertoten721 totally agree, boogeyman fits better as metaphor for any fear "object" (and in the end the death itself)

Also in this Song Rammstein give us Room for interpretation. In the past in Germany we´had played a game "Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann" One ist chasing and the others have to run away. For me Till is playing an politician and spread fear in the World. You can see it on the red wire going into the screens of the folk. The screens sucking the life out of the People (or feed them with Fear). And every Politician have their Fans which are played by the cheerleaders. Thats my point of View of the Song. Much love from GER and cheers to you. Prost🍻

well recognized, it's about xenophobia, fear of the foreign. the cheerleaders spread fear and anxiety, wall fence to protect yourself from the strangers, cameras because you can no longer trust anyone to protect yourself, TV broken the fear and anxiety can no longer be spread. at the beginning of the video the woman and the child sit behind the fence, at the end of the video the woman and the child are still sitting in the same place, you do not need to be afraid of strangers who are not evil 💣🍻🍻🤘

The sound is good but I am disappointed with the political statement. We have so many problems in Europe with Africans/Muslims who cannot be integrated. The people damage the bottom line of society massively, cost alone in Germany of the total society 50 billion euros. Who comes with fear is just stupid, it is realism. The constant denial of the socialization of the people is not to be surpassed in stupidity.

@@billburnett6489 I think they mix European and American themes here. The refugees behind barbed wire relate more to Europe while the assault rifles relate more to America. The unifying element is fear (especially xenophobia), which is why people build walls and arm themselves. In detail, of course, there is much room for interpretation.

Some things to add for this song which i found interesting: The "schwarzer Mann" doublemeaning is really interesting here cause it means "boogeyman" on one hand and translated word by word it means "black man" --> Leading to an interpretation that depicts people with darker Skin/imigrants as the boogeyman. While the people who believe such things and spread their hate/fear are the real boogeyman which is beautifully displyed by till strapped in a straightjacket. Furthermore i like how the whole video was filmed as black and white only the hate that was spreading to the people through the wires was red. At the End, as the TV broke and the image of the people in the barbed wire circle didnt exist anymore on the Horizon of thoughts for the people on the sofa, the color came back. From my point of view it supports a picture of the contrast in society or the superficiality and hypocrisy many people show towards imigrants. If they are far away they say "oh yeah i love a multicultural society look at me i am so woke." But if people then come as refugees or imigrants they are the first ones to pull out a gun at the border. On top of that i liked the detail with the snack at the and. These things are waffels with marshmallow fluff and chocolat glaze. In germany years ago these things were often referred to as "Negerkuss" which means "Negro kiss" in English. By now it changed to "Schaumkuss" "Foamkiss" for obvious reasons. For me this scene as drastic as it sounds depicts the western states feeding on the "Negros" as a critique on our western behaviour towards african people and cultures, robbing them from their ressources. All in all a great song. I just love how Rammstein songs while you hear the Songs are just bangers but get elevated to another level and enriched with Room to think about / interpretation if you watch the respective videos to it.

Absolutely, this is the first comment I've seen that mentions the Mohrenkopf. The irony of sitting in front of the TV and eating chocolate (google Negerkuss) kisses while watching black refugees on TV is clearly in context with the rest of the video. With many other interpretations, I think it's also about inherited racism or at least playing with the ambiguity of the understood meaning "boogeyman" and the direct translation "who's afraid of the black man". In my opinion, one should not insist that the translation for "who is afraid of the bogeyman" clearly refers to a villain and has nothing to do with the actual literal translation.

That candy has a similar history in Denmark, but decades ago, the biggest brand was progressive enough to change their label from "Sambo" (the stereotypical black skinned young boy hero) to Samba (the dance). Besides many buyers saw nothing racist about wanting to kiss a black person.

My thoughts on this: 1. The song is about how certain "leaders" want to afraid people to control them. In the video, this is visualised by the red wires. 2. The dominant colors in the video are black, white and red, which are the colors of the flag of the Kaiserreich and the Third Reich. Also, you can say that the world the people in this video are living in, is just black and white, no grey. It can be understood as a reference to the simple minded people who are for example voting for politicians who are telling them exactly this black/white view (WE are good, THEY are bad). Also, the band is dressed up as the stereotype of this kind of conservative people. 3. "Der schwarze Mann" (The black man) is a german synonym for a creepy, ghost-like evil. As in the first verse of the song, children are often told "to obey, or else the black man will get you". It can be translated to boogey man in english, but like often, there is another meaning in this context. As said, the video is about leaders who are seeding fear of anything foreign in peoples minds. So, the phrase "black man" can also be interpreted literally, namely refugees. In my opinion, it is a reference to the migration crisis in 2015 in Germany. Or just think of the plans for a wall on the Mexican border... OK, that's enough for now, I think with this hints you can figure out the rest for yourselve 😉 Greetings from Germany!

The cheerleader moves in the beginning and the end are probably referencing the "Haka Dance" done by the Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. The candy which the band eats in the end was called "Negerküsse" "Negro Kisses" in Germany back in the day. The name was changed a couple of years ago.

In the end they were eating "Schaumküsse" (foam kisses) or as they were called a couple of years ago "Negerküsse" (neger/nigger kisses) "Der schwarze Mann" is meaning the same as the boogeyman, so it's a folklore and stands for "evil" but the words mean "the black man", but by black you don't think so much about the color of the skin but about something dark and bad/evil. Maybe that is the thought behind the candy :)

(Copy & pasted from other reaction-comment I previously made) Just some remarks: The several times mentioned "Schwarze Mann" ("black man") is known as a child fright figure in the German-speaking area ("Wer hat Angst vorm Schwarzen Mann" = Who does fear the black man). Depending on the region and time, it was understood to mean different beings: a dark shadowy figure or a man dressed in black. As a metaphor, the "bogeyman" reached a "peak" as personalization of evil, savagery, and the unknown in the course of colonization, and in the process also acquired a racist connotation. In this context, I find the consumption of those sweets (a kind of chocolate covered marshmallow - in German also called Negerküsse - "negro kisses") at the end during the end credits very interesting, which work through this "black man" symbolism. Also the colors usage is interesting (Black/White/Red representing the Nazi-color Spectrum). I also found it interesting at the end of the credits that when the TV was destroyed, the color came back into the picture. Further, I noticed that the pie-like plots seen from above correspond to the "political symbol" at the lectern where the singer, wearing a straitjacket, gives his speech. After these borders & plots collapse during the wild shoot-out, the politician, unleashed by the straitjacket to spread his propaganda/fear. Cheering on the cheerleaders is the equivalent of pitching an idea/product and the dancers are slammed with money to sell the bricks and guns to the landowners. This Clip has many layers and can be interpreted in many directions. I see there is a statement on xenophobia and populism/media

On hell of a video and one hell of a song. WTF was my first thought as well. I watched and listened to it a few times and then it made perfect sense to me. Who is the bogeyman? You are. You're your own bogeyman. We're all fed information and not always from reliable sources, we're told what and who to fear and even why to fear whatever it is. What we do with that instruction though is down to us. We can blindly accept it like the band does in the video and potentially become so paranoid that we descend into our own personal hell or we can look at the full picture without this pernicious influence and make our own decisions as we see at the end. As a global society, we're all watching one another and while being aware of what's happening is healthy, being automatically suspicious of everyone isn't. Everything about Angst is stunning. The music hits you between the eyes from the start, Till's vocals are outstanding. That scream of "Angst!" makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. You can hear the mania involved in what he's portraying as well as seeing it in the way his character is dressed and acting. The use of colour is interesting as well-black and white (as many people see arguments) with red for everything that is dangerous. The cheerleaders are made up to look like Till as they're his acolytes, helping to spread the message. They only look human when they're looking for money from the hapless middle-aged paranoid men. At the end of the video, it becomes clear that we're all prisoners of fear in one form or another-refugees physically held prisoner because we're told that they present a danger to us, the band are prisoners of their own fear. The word "Du"-you- is repeated all the way through the song which is in part how I've drawn my conclusion about who the bogeyman is. Rammstein once again holding up the mirror to society and pointing out to us what we're doing to each other and ourselves. Fun facts-Ollie Riedel appears as one of the cheerleaders (not sure what's gotten into Ollie these days but he's got over his shyness since turning 50 it seems) and the dog is Paul's as I recall. Great reaction from you both as always. Your facial expressions matched mine when I first saw and heard this outstanding song and video. Creepy AF at times, but thought provoking.

The song doesn't question "who is the boogeyman" but " who is afraid of the black man/boogeyman". Since 2014 we have seen the increased xenophobia towards poc here in Germany (and many other countries) fueled by right wing parties.

@@prinz_butterbrot262 I appreciate what you're saying and understand when you say who is afraid of the bogeyman. The bigger question to me is who or what is the bogeyman and it's whatever we're told it is and we have to be afraid of it. It's been COVID, and refugees and asylum seekers here and a lot more besides. Since Brexshit raised its ugly head here, xenophobia has increased here in the UK. We're now at a point where our Home Secretary wants to send all asylum seekers and refugees other than those from Ukraine to Rwanda on a one-way ticket there. The thought of it is sending me off the deep end because it's such a disgusting policy. We're all one race, the human race and we should be looking after each other, not fighting amongst ourselves all the time.

Like always and especially with Rammstein songs it is up to the listner and what she/he feels about it and what the song means to her/him. If there is something like "the meaning" of the song, Mat seems to be pretty close to it from what I understand the lyrics. The translation "bogeyman" seems to be right for most people. However in germany "der schwarze Mann" is such a horror figur but also could just mean "black man" and could stand for all types of "foreign" people which we "learned" to be afraid of from the beginning of our childhood. It has kind of a double meaning to it in my opinion. There is a childsplay which goes as follows: "Who is scared of the black man?", "No one!", "And when he comes?", "Then we gonna run!". Black man Bogeyman. So it could be the figur of fear and anxiety like boogeyman or it could be the symbol for foreign people we are scared of and to whom we build walls against to protect ourselfs and also buying these weapons and such. Could be the neighbour I dont know or in the bigger scale people of a neighbor country or even neighbour continant.

This was the reaction I was waiting for! Definite Tilleven out of 10 here! To me it's by far the best song on the album. I took it as the media, government, and internet breeding fear of the OTHER, the foreigner/outsider, the "boogeyman" that's going to get you if you don't build walls and arm yourself then your white picket fence suburban life is in danger. It's through fear that those in power whether it be government, corporations, or media are able to control society and manipulate the masses to walk in lockstep. Throughout history societies have had a boogeyman they were made to fear, while the real boogeymen in power rob them blind. Rant aside, I'd say Angst, Dicke Titten, Giftig, Armee der Tristen, and Lugen are probably my favorite tracks of the album.

I feel the main message is the downward spiral irrational fear can cause I feel like it touches on the topics of : the boogie man (the unknown harm), how fear is spread throughout by media but also the fear of foreigners possibly about the berline and how isolated Germany was to outside influence

The Bogyman word is also literally translated as "Black man" so it's a wordplay. Given the video, the song is about (rather against) racist propaganda, and fearmongering in general. Also, this must suck for Rammstein (the war) cause they Really liked Russia and going there to tour.

This song is about the news and television. It shows that we are watching a madman telling us what to do, and we do what he says, because we are controlled by this little box called TV. And it shows that if we won't stop, one day we all will fade to nothing, falling in an endless void. But if we'll stop at time, our world will become a better and happier place. It is represented in the end, where the guy is breaking the TV. More he breaks it, more colors appear on the screen.
@robertroberto7659
@robertroberto7659 2 жыл бұрын
My taking on the message at the end is a bit different. They are watching poor people suffering and the moment they stop watching (destroying the TV) the color comes back. In discussions I often hear phrases like "I don't want to know about all of this" when we're talking about suffering people. It's easier to live your life if you don't know about how other people are suffering. But it doesn't help them if you look away, it just helps you to get "the color back into your life" But both interpretations can be equally right or wrong, Rammstein always leaves a lot of space for interpretation and even for Germans it's never clear what the exact meaning of their texts are due to them being filled with double meanings. PS: The madman isn't telling what to do, he is inflicting fear of the bogeyman (translated, but the literal translation would be "black man") and you have to protect yourself from them.

I am a patriot and I love my country with all its mistakes and history. I love Rammstein's music. In my opinion it's the best metal rock group in the world and they produce the best music videos. Rammstein is the next level of music, videos and their lyrics are epic. The German poets Goethe, Schiller, Lessing or Heine would be proud of Rammstein, not only because they use their poems ... they understood them. I thank Rammstein and I thank your channel. Your reactions are almost as good as Rammstein himself. :-) That's my opinion, if I may say it.

Good morning you two, it's almost half 2 in the morning here. I'm so pumped for this album & please cross everything for a tour in Australia cos every time I've gone to see them something has happened & I couldn't make it. What the fuck is absolutely the most appropriate reaction I reckon. I like how bands are kinda doing this group weirdness. The dancers in Ghost Danse Macabre, whatever the shit was happening in Muse Won't Stand Down & this. It's creepy as hell! And good they've changed the subtitles from "everyone fears the black man" to "thy boogeyman" cos it got a bit lost in translation there. Yeah fear is all through this song & clip. I've been held back by fear so much in my life but then I got "fear is the mind killer" tattooed on my head. I don't shave a hawk in so much these days but I know it's there. Gonna be funny when I am a balding old lady with this big head tattoo 😂 Now to wait for the next clip!

Yes, great song and video. But it's not only about refugees. These middle-class white guys, who were good neighbors at the beginning, end up shooting at each other (or at the images the media and demagogues have created of them) and then they all fall into the abyss.

It’s fear that’s fed to people through (social) media, that is driving people apart. People in fear can’t think straight and will grab at any straw. Politicians use that in their own benefit. Left and right. I think the message is: don’t be lead by fear but think and reach out to others. Unite to make a better world.

The color red becomes more apparent as Till smashes the television with the lawnmower. I think there are too many entendres/references to focus on tbh. It could mean that the TV makes you see in either black or white (or in America, red or blue) and the whole black and white theme permeates throughout the song. Once the "Schwartz Man" (Till) starts blabbering on TV all the bandmates are transfixed with their faces being sucked into the darkness. They start out as happy neighbors waving hello, sharing the paper, and a big red (going with the theme here) tree in the middle of all their yards. They used to share color (color, in my mind, meaning common ground, light, ect. The cheerleaders are like the high society type people convincing you that "your neighbors are out to get you, and guns, walls and cameras will protect you" whilst providing all these things with a smile. The double entendre comes when you realize it could be the far right conservative party they are trying to talk about (lord knows it didn't work out in Germany, hence the red theme, going with the third reich colors). Maybe a warning? I'm conservative btw, so no bullshit, pick apart my interpretation of anything, not my political affiliation... The woman and child would be the third entendre. A "black woman" and her child could also mean he sees how fucked up we are in America, STILL, about racial division. I think a ton of time and thought went into this video, and it's executed perfectly. It makes you think. That's what I love about Rammstein. Peace and love, and great reaction! I'll sub for sure.

Leave it to Till to take the concept of the "boogeyman" (every culture has their own version of it) and turn it into a song full of duality and hidden meanings. Not to mention how well the video adds more layers to the lyrics.
