That's why they revealed the dad to be a marine and not a former accountant - it's to further intimidate these young men with the idea that he could very easily beat them up. A mother could be used in this sketch but it would use guilt and appeals to chivalry instead of intimidation.

A couple of years later they did another MTV dating show sketch with John Cena as the host. Cecily, Beck, and Kyle were contestants on that one too, with Mikey Day filling out the cast in place of Taran Killam. Very different approach to the premise, it wasn't just a rehash of this sketch.

People are always bashing SNL, saying it's not funny anymore (not like it was back when *they* were in high school), but this sketch is solid as hell. It's not about some endlessly-reused stock character, nor is it all about laughing as the actors struggle not to break character. It's just *funny* and well done and I really enjoyed watching it. Lorne Michaels is a genius.

Yeah, that's BS. It's still funny as hell. The difference is that back in the day, we only had SNL for Saturday night tv entertainment. Today we have many options. I stopped watching SNL in the late 90s because of the internet. I've returned to watching it online and I've laughed at today's SNL just as much as I used to. We changed, not SNL.
