H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... Here we go with week 154 of our favorite classic game show (the final week will be 291). These episodes were taped on June 13, 1976 and first aired in early August of 1976. Once again, our three stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces, and this time they're joined by: ~~~Semi-regular Fannie Flagg, back after just one week off, meaning she's been on the panel 3 out of the past 4 weeks. It's no wonder she's the most frequent semi-regular of all (90 weeks total, compared to 75 for runner-up Betty White). This is Fannie's 44th week on the program. She has the second-highest accuracy rate in the head-to-head match this week (after Charles). ~~~Ethel Merman, returning for her third week (of 5). Ethel last entertained us in episodes 726-730. She hasn't yet had an opportunity to play the head-to-head. Maybe this week? ~~~And Robert Hegyes, making his sole week of Match Game appearances. Trivia: Despite his youthful appearance and the fact that he was playing a high school student on "Welcome Back, Kotter" at the time, Hegyes was 25 when this week's episodes were taped. According to Wikipedia, he was also a cousin of rock singer Jon Bon Jovi. My wish list this week is pretty much the same as every week: to see some variety in the head-to-head match. When Richard plays every time (or every time but once) in a week, I get a little bored. If I had my druthers, Fannie would play at least once, and I think it'd be a hoot to see Ethel play (and match) in the head-to-head! I'm always glad when Charles and/or Brett have a shot! Brett's played a few times lately (three of the past five weeks), so I'd prefer to see Charles play again first. He hasn't been called on since his mega-run of 7 + 2 attempts back in 707-717, so we're looking at a nearly 50-episode streak with no CNR H/H action! Anyway, whatever happens in the H/H this week, I plan to just sit back and enjoy some 1976-style ________! ~~~Today's action: In the closing minutes of yesterday's program, we were smack in the middle of the second tie-breaker round, and so we start off today with part two of that tie-breaker, and the (male) champion answers "Boobs! Sorry, that's all I could think of!" -- You couldn't write funnier lines if you tried! -- ("Warts" was the definitive answer, and "boobs" struck out this time.) At any rate, the third tie-breaker (I seem to remember another time when we had three tie-breakers, but unfortunately I didn't make a note of it) proves to be the champion's downfall. He spins away with $4,050 as an excited new champion stands beside Gene, ready to have a go at the Super-Match. Today's audience match question: "Birth _________ " (My thoughts: Day, of Venus, of a Nation) The celebs: Richard (day), Fannie (control), and Brett (rate) The choice: Day The answers: Place, Control, Day Our champion starts off on the right track. I'm curious to see who she calls on for the H/H. I would have guessed Richard since she called on him first and took his winning suggestion, but then she didn't run up to smooch him. Maybe she's just so excited she forgot? Well, we start the week off in pro forma fashion with Richard preparing to write the all-important answer. He's matched six of his ten most recent attempts (an excellent streak). Today's H/H question: "Drinking _______ " (Fountain is my first thought. Water is my second. Problem is my third. I'll stick with my first thought.) Richard writes his answer quickly. The camera cuts away, so I don't get a sense as to the length of his response. Our new champion says "Man." I would say it's that's a million-to-one chance of matching Richard. "I drew a blank," she explains. (I get it. It's super easy for me to sit quietly at home and put the video on pause and think of my answer. I imagine it must be nerve-wracking to have to stand up on that stage under those lights, in front of those cameras and celebrities, with hundreds of people in the audience, and have to think of a good answer.) It's too bad, because this was an easy question, in my opinion. Richard reveals the same answer I thought of: "Fountain." No match today. Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Charles - 51.0% (27 wins in 53 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (18 wins in 36 attempts). Fannie - 47.8% (11 wins in 23 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Richard - 41.5% (188 wins in 453 attempts). Brett - 41.3% (26 wins in 63 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 766, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

Goldsmith-Bradford, first tie-breaker, question A: "Well, it's sort of like warts, in a way - I thought the operative phrase was 'Hansel and Gretel', so I said her LICORICE SHINGLES." (Bzzt!) Second tie-breaker, question B: "Of course, some breeds of DOG are stranger-looking than others…" (Ding!) Question A: "I don't know if anyone uses this phrase anymore, but I said they were REDUCING." (Bzzt!) Third tie-breaker… um… no, wait, there were only two after all. (What's up with that, MatchGameProductions? Oh, well, on to the…) Super Match, part 1: (if asked before Richard) DAY (if asked between Richard and Fannie) CONTROL (if asked after Fannie) OF A NATION Part 2: WATER Bradford-Madden, round 1, question B: "Well, at least mine's edible; I said FISH paste." (Bzzt!) Question A: "Is this a match? I don't think this is a match. Is CHAUFFEUR a match for hearse?" (Bzzt!) "No, I didn't think so."
