I build another Matchbox classic, from a 1983 kit Monty's Caravan make an appearance. The vehicle was used a a mobile command vehicle for British Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery and features in the kit along with a Dingo scout car and a neat diorama.

Tamiya extra thin works perfectly when applied thinly on decals (doesn't matter how old they are). It not only creates the strongest bond, but also melts away the films and gives the decals a matt painted look. Don't be greedy though, or it can melt away the decals. 👍

It’s as if Matchbox,deliberately,set out to make stuff Airfix couldn’t or wouldn’t do.The mid 70’s to 80’s were a fun time for modellers.

The modern model companies could learn from these value for money old kits . Figures and diorama provided as well as a model was a great idea now so sadly ignored . Apart from Tamiya who still provide excellent figures to complement the model most just give the bare essentials and no more . Even with most up to date aircraft kits you get no pilot figure something that was always included in the past . These things add a lot to a model .

I agree, to make 1/72 scale AFVs on small dioramas must be an open goal for a modern manufacturer. Airfix seems to ignore this market which seems crazy to me.

So true. The matchbox dioramas brought the models to life. Made my first Revel kit recently and was gutted that there was no pilot😢

I think only some Airfix kits come with pilots now, their new tooled me110 did but their new tooled me410 didn’t. Figures are good they add scale and give the builder options.

I always weigh my plastic kits down with a few old coins or chips of metal hidden and glued to the interior. Helps keep the wheels flat and gives a pleasant heft when moving them around the wargames table!

Marvellous work Neil. Those little tips and the description of all your hard won techniques and 'secrets' should be gold for beginners and experienced modellers alike. As you know, I've built literally hundreds of models, but I have never encountered that technique where you specifically go back and add some spot touches of the base colour OVER the dry brushing. When you see it explained and performed, it is pure gold. I'll be using that one from now on.

Matchbox models were brilliant. I remember scrimping and scraping for a 1/32 BF109 my local toy shop (remember them!) Had, only for it to be reduced to a fraction of its cost dueto missing manual! Bonus. It was the biggest scale I had ever built and although not a fan of the BF109 particularly, I loved it.

Nicely done. I would have used a much more brown muddy color as dirt because of the German soil in north-west Germany. I would also have put this mud color at the inside of the mud guards. I used the noise antenna hair that our cat lost in the living room. I picked these up, cut them to the right length, glue them and painted them black. Regards from the Battle of the Bulge area

Dust dries fairly light regardless of the colour of the local mud. Only exception is iron-rich soil of the type you see in Africa and SE Asia, which can be very red.

Very nice - a blast from the past really, I remember building those Matchbox kits in the 80's, and I really loved getting the bases with the kits. Which makes me wonder why not more companies include that? A simple base and a couple of figures would be awesome, especially for younger modellers who would just need to build and paint everything from the box, without having to tear open a cornflakes box or something.

@@creativetimewasting I guess I was buying revell productions of Matchbox then. Living in a small town, toyshop choices were very limited, usually Shermans, Churchills, Panthers and Tigers etc. Maybe a Sd Kfz and Jeep or two or it would be cold war stuff.

Cheers, no I add the thinners directly into the airbrush cup and mix it in situ. The mix is around 50/50 and is probably the consistency of slightly thick milk. I will try to demonstrate in one of my next videos 👍

I bought this kit recently. I want to use a primer but I have never used one before. What primer did you use and where did you buy? I did hear that you could buy suitable primer from Halfords but again I’m unsure what would be suitable. Thanks
@creativetimewasting
@creativetimewasting 4 ай бұрын
Yes, Halfords standard grey primer is excellent and performs very well with any paint you want to use. I buy autotek grey primer from Amazon, it’s from the same manufacturer that supplies Halfords it’s just cheaper. Autotek primer is in a black can with green writing. Just be carful to when priming models, light dust coats only and you will be fine. If you want me to do a little demo video for you I can at the weekend just let me know otherwise good luck with your model 👍

Thanks for the very kind demo offer. If you can show it on your next build that would be great as I’m about to start building an Airfix ME 109 so can’t wait to see your next video. I’ll head to Halfords when I return home. You have some super tips such as the aerial hack and you’ve done a great of explaining your weathering technique. With the oil wash do you have to clean up the overspill? I use Tamiya panel liner but overspill is very noticeable. The paint job on the diorama is incredible and if you are doing another one it would be great to see how each step is achieved. Subbed now and off to watch your other vids👍

I will incorporate primer application on my next video which is indeed a trio of me109s, two classic Matchbox models and the newish one from Airfix in 1/72 scale. Stay tuned for that one. I do use Tamiya panel wash too but mainly only for more detailed areas on larger kits or on white areas such as wheel bays etc. I would use it on a more gloss surface than matt and you can use white spirt on a cotton bud to clean away the excess wash. I will do a quick tutorial on that too shortly. Thanks for watching.
