When you think about it, the damaged hook and windscreen tell a story. At the tail end of a job one day, the crane operator was in a huge hurry, since the permits allowing the rig on site were about to expire. In his/her haste, he/she retracted the boom without making sure the hook was secured with a tether. It started swinging, and smashed into the windscreen. The operator was taken off that particular machine and sent back for training, and Health and Safety delivered an epic lecture.

I am very impressed with how nice this looks! I like construction equipment models so this was really great to see it restored. The clear parts look new and I can actually see through them now. If you have any more construction vehicles I hope you will consider restoring them too. Thank you for taking the time to make and share this tutorial.

Aside from some minor details, you did a very nice job of giving this crane a new lease on life, as an impressive display piece! I still have mine, approximately 40-41 years later. I can still recall that I got it at the local Kmart, in the Seattle-Tacoma suburbs of Washington State (USA) whilst my younger sibling and I were out shopping with our parents; based on the years of production/availability, I would have been somewhere between 6-8 years of age at the time. I was so impressed by the humongous size (in comparison to all of my other Hot Wheels, Majorette, Matchbox, and Tomica Pocket Cars), and I remember pleading with my parents that I absolutely needed it, which they agreed to. It certainly became one of my favourite pieces of my collection, and was often played with. In Junior High, it even was included in my 8th grade "Cultural Fair" display of the history of trucks, my personal interest in them (from the age of 7, I aspired to one day become a Designer for the likes of Kenworth), and my family's connection to them (my maternal grandfather had owned and operated a small truck line in SW WA State, engaged with livestock, general freight haulage, and road/general construction, many years before). I hope that I have not permanently lost the black plastic grapple that originally came included with this crane - I used that frequently to hoist my other diecast cars about, and don't know if a replacement has ever been available, as is the case with a number of other vintage Matchbox parts.

This is from an era when toys were actually built for kids to play with, and also when kids actually went outside! The plastic garbage made today will never be around to be restored. Even the reissues of the Tonka dump trucks etc. are mostly plastic! If only this crane could talk! I'll bet it had many adventures lifting heavy loads back in the day! I was born in 68 so I remember those days. However, as a farm kid in Ohio, I got to "play" with real machines. I still think that your videos are awesome though. Keep up the great work!

Saw this in my recommendations purely by chance. I actually have one of these--you can see it parked alongside the starting point of most of my many "test track" model-train videos. It's paint job is not quite as beat up as yours was, but one of the outriggers has broken off. If I chose to restore it, I'd probably have to clone a rubber-mold replacement from one of the surviving ones. Having watched many other restoration videos, (notably of baremetalhw and diecast resurrection), if I were to restore mine I'd probably opt to drill/tap the posts and use button-head screws to reasasemble the unit rather than rely on epoxy & superglue to hold it together.

Hi danny ...do you also know how to restore matchbox speedkings cellephane windows....the ones in a box?
@gregorydix33455 жыл бұрын
Are these cranes worth anything as I have 21of these in various conditions. One is in its original box, the box is not pristine condition. I also have 10 of the military ones in various conditions? Does restoring them increase their value?
@DannysDiecastDisasters5 жыл бұрын
The prices vary a lot depending on the condition and also where you sell them. The better the condition the more they are worth and the box adds a lot of value usually. Restoring them would lower the value as a collectable up to a point, if the toy was completely wrecked and you fixed it it is likely worth more otherwise it would lower the value I guess. I see Kings in good condition go from anywhere from $20 - $80+

How long did you put into this one mate? I imagine a good few hours aye?
@DannysDiecastDisasters5 жыл бұрын
Yes its always hard to say because you do something for maybe half an hour or so then you might have to wait a few hours or overnight, then messing around with the camera to make sure you film everything. I guess if you were just doing the restoration it would be about 4 or 5 hours work or so not including drying times. I find it take about a week to finish a super or speed king with drying times included.
