As written above in the episode description, this was Pat Carroll's only week of Match Game. Carroll has also appeared on other Goodson-Todman game shows including To Tell the Truth and Password. To younger people like me, she will forever be known as the voice of Ursula, the villain in Disney's The Little Mermaid. She and Jo Ann Pflug are the remaining panelists from this week. Also the only week of Robert Culp. At the time best known for starring in I-Spy, at the time of this he was preparing to audition for the role of Commander John Koenig in the Gerry Anderson sci-fi series Space: 1999 (he lost out to Martin Landau). In Wednesday's episode, Gene issues a plea to Burt Reynolds to appear on the show (he had appeared in the penultimate week of NBC Match Game in 1969). He would decline an appearance on the panel, but would make a cameo in 1974.

To older people like me, Pat Carroll will be known as Prunella, the stepsister who creaked, in the 1964 version of Rodger's & Hammerstein's Cinderella. Robert Culp was also known at this time for playing Bob in the film, "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice" with Natalie Wood, Elliot Gould, and Dyan Cannon.

Phone number was a great answer. Flying to a location to look up a phone number is a hilarious take...for 1973 at least.
@HerecomestheCalavera3 жыл бұрын
I thought it was a really stupid answer until I saw that three of the celebrities put address. Honestly sister and parents were worse answers than phone number. My guess was skirt as it seemed like about the only answer it could be. I was surprised that only Brett put it and then acted like it was such a taboo thing to say. I know it was the 70s but a few episodes back they said Batman and Robin were queers. So if that was ok to say I'd think skirt would be fine!

Lol - Cute intro to the bottom row with the cards 🙂 "Converted!" That was my first thought. I usually don't comment about what I'd have said, but I love that Pat Carroll (possibly a shikse) picked up on what I saw as the implied association between chicken soup and Jewishness. Klugman should've gotten it but went the "take my wife, please route."
@kevansf2 жыл бұрын
According to Wikipedia, Pat Carroll (who is the rare MG guest panelist who is still with us) is a practicing Roman Catholic. And I agree that "converted" was the best answer!

Sometimes Richard goes full-on British without realizing it, with answers like tea break at 15:55 and then a little after 19:00, when he says "put a sock in it." Both are British terms that were rarely heard in the US at that time. The contestants answer to tea BLANK (tea house) was a bad answer, though. A British panelist probably would not come up with a Japanese reference. Tea bag would have probably been logical.

@markjamesmeli25204 жыл бұрын
By this time, the Odd Couple had pretty steady ratings and a following. For the first couple of seasons of the show, Jack would appear on shows and interviews without the piece. Somewhere in KZbin there's a clip of both Tony and Jack on the Mike Douglas show like this. That clip is from early on in season one of OC. In 1973, the duo was doing network promos and possibly even a couple of TV commercials together, so Klugman's piece became commonplace. You have to admit, it's a pretty good one for that time period. I think that Tony wore one too, to cover up some male-pattern-baldness toward the back of his head.
