Actually Mos Def started out as an actor, even as a child, then broke into Rap. He kind of did the opposite of most rappers that eventually went into acting.

Mos Def is one of those people who just naturally radiate artistry - the sort of people who are almost annoyingly talented. But if you’re going to listen to Mos Def, it’d be blasphemous to not check out the 1998 debut album of both Mos Def and Talib Kweli, known together as Black Star. It’s widely considered one of the best & most significant albums in hip-hop history - not to mention the fact that, as the very first CD I ever owned (a gift on my 9th b-day in ‘98, actually), it represents the genesis of my entire personal identity. It was the album that introduced me to hip-hop, which became the literal foundation of my existence particularly throughout my teenage years.

Two things. Mos Def Ms. Fat Booty is a much better song from the same album, and Most Def and Talib Kweli was part of a group called Black Star and they made a classic album. Respiration, featuring Common is a great song to review. These guys, along with Common, were very conscience rappers, and sometimes additional listens are required to really understand what they are saying. That's way albums like these grow on the listener.
