I'd love to play around with this but for what it is the cost is a bit prohibitive at least for what I would be able to do with it. Very cool device though! A bit different from your standard vape as the smoke doesn't dissipate as fast. I imagine the device must cool down the smoke to achieve that.
@MathieuStern

I never used a Vape but i a pretty sure you can't create liquide smoke with it.

@@MathieuStern I'm pretty sure it's possible. I looked at the elements of the product on their website and the atomizer is clearly a copy of a standard smoking/vape atomizer. And there is no description of the components of the liquid but I'm pretty sure it is close to 100% VG (vegetal glycerine). My bet: an e-cig for power vape (+ custom firmware) + 100% VG + a fan = the smokegenie for a fraction of the price
@AaronsLyfe
@AaronsLyfe 2 жыл бұрын
@@MathieuStern It's all about the temp of the PG/VG aka fog juice. An ecig is the same principle just doesn't have a long nozzle which allows the vapor to condense back down due to cooling. I used to make fog curtains for some shows where I'd run the output of a fog machine through a cooler before exhausting it from above. Same effect just on a much larger scale. The key is getting the fog at or below room temps. I've been wondering when someone would make one of these and now I suspect we might see more hit the market at a much lower price

@@larsouille366 hey, thanks for making your guesses on how you may create a similar functionality for SmokeGENIE! Normal vapes can not create smoke for any longer than 5-10 seconds. They will overheat and you need to replace the heating coil. Our chamber is designed so that you can do a continuous run over 5 minutes, which suits the needs of filmmakers more. We actually came from the background of FX, so we know quite a bit about modifying vape technology….the genie is definitely not a modified toy. Our vision for the genie is for intense productions where reliability is key! To be able to save time cost for down time /maintenance is what makes the price for the machine. The genie is currently involved in a lot of movie productions in Hong Kong, Hope that helps you put it into context!

Wow I want one! Does the smoke leave any residue or make surfaces sticky afterwards? Or does it 100% completely disappear into the air?
@MathieuStern
@MathieuStern 2 жыл бұрын
it will leave a residue on glass and cold surface like stone and metal, but only if you do the liquide smoke option, it's very easy to clean with soap and water. I had a residue on the glass floor when i shot the zombie toy, but after 2 seconds under hot water it was gone.
@Beatsy
@Beatsy 2 жыл бұрын
Actually looks quite handy if you need the effect. For tabletop stuff, I just use my normal vape. Fill a plastic bag with a dense cloud and then let the "smoke" drop out from a cut-off corner (don't squeeze the bag, that will disperse the vapour too fast). The clouds pool up and flow if the air is still and they waft around if it isn't. Can't do the volume this unit does, but I haven't needed that for smaller scale things.

Looking at these comments about how $400-500 is overpriced, but then saw the latest update says kits will retail for closer to $800-900. While I don't doubt it's well constructed, that's completely insane. I don't expect many will sell at that price and will be quickly undercut by the competition that do a better job balancing the price to quality ratio. I'm already eyeing the MicroFogger 3 Pro with tank upgrade for about 1/3 of the price. It might not be quite as fancy, but I seriously doubt the SmokeGenie is 3x better. (Obviously the price critique is not directed at you Mathieu, since it's not your product. Just sharing my thoughts on it in general.)

This is superb! Thank you for demonstrating this. I did have a few questions in mind - Does it smell (I've used a couple machines/tubes that were stinky)? How do you "refill" it and how long does the tube last? And can you get smoke with colours?
@pmi_gear
@pmi_gear 2 жыл бұрын
hey Janmejay! Thank you for being Interested! We designed the formula to have it smell odourless and pleasant around models / artists! Many Cinematographers prefer our smell over traditional fog machines. Also, the chamber had a very easy refill system, you can check out more on our website! As for coloured smoke, currently the technology is using fine powder dust to create the colour, so it is still very dangerous (it is difficult to get out of the body once breathed in). So at the point we are not developing that yet. But maybe there will be future technology waiting for us!

Yes, the reason Film Productions in Hong Kong prefer us over traditional Hazers because a lot of shooting locations don't have Power and is too small for Big machines. (Most indoor spaces in Hong Kong is below 1000Sq Feet).

@@MathieuStern Hi Mathieu, we used to do that trick on theatre and hotel stages. Normally we had smoke machines that needed to be powered by a wall plug of course so not very portable. For a portable version this gadges has to be the best for sure. Otherwise maybe finding a USB smoke machine of some sort. The trick is to have cold smoke, so it stays on the ground.

@@Symous1616 You'te right! The secret to whether smoke floats our sinks is precisely about temperature. If the smoke is hotter than the atmosphere, it rises. If the smoke is cooler, it sinks. That's why our nozzles are designed to create a cooling effect for the smoke!

That is an insanely overpriced modified box mod for vaping. Even the refills are overpriced lol, go get a gallon of vegetable glycerin for $40. I will say the different modes are definitely cool, but there's no way on this green earth that thing is worth anywhere near $400. I'd be waiting for Black Friday to roll around again 😆 I do have an extra old box mod, I should try to diy this....

Hey Shishka! Yes, years ago when we started our career as filmmaking FX crew, we have tried modifying Vape for similar results. It makes smoke, but we got really fed up with all the reliability and maintenance issues, that ultimately inspired the development of the SmokeGENIE! We have personally seen Modified Vapes Catch fire and even explode on set. It's a nightmare to use and fix vapes. The main cost of the SmokeGENIE is not actually about the effects, but to build the system rebost enough so it doesn't break on set. Time cost in film productions are very, very expensive. With all that said, we definitely encourage you to try if you are resourceful enough though! It's a cool engineering challenge and maybe you'll get a breakthrough!

@@pmi_gear What does smoke genie do specifically to ensure that it doesn't catch fire? I was under the impression that the majority of the vape mod fires were caused by a poor bms system and not the attachments on the mod. I love the product but it'll be hard for me to sallow $450 for something that a used vape could do. I do understand the appeal for reliability on a larger set, but for shoe string budget filmmakers where time doesn't always equal money I'm not sure I can justify buying this. Are there any other reasons to pick up a smoke genie over some diy option?

@@pmi_gear if you make it cheaper you sell more. If you keep the price high don't expect many buyers. It makes better sense to make your product available to the mass public as opposed to a smaller group of people with higher incomes. That and the fact that you will get better publicity for an affordable device as opposed to an expensive thing that most people won't buy.

I use a vape device and zero nicotine formula, with a straw placed in the chamber “vents”. Instead of sucking air like you would during vape, i push out air and the smoke goes out the straw from the vent. Another variation I do is use a battery powered leaf blower with its air intake vents placed directly to the vaping inlet. Works well
