The Hawkei is an Australian light four-wheel-drive protected mobility vehicle. Originally designed in 2010 to meet an Australian Defence Force (ADF) requirement for a light armoured patrol vehicle to replace some of its Land Rover Perentie variants. The Hawkei is a highly mobile, highly protected, 7-tonne vehicle, with inbuilt systems to allow it to be used as a fighting platform. It has been developed with Vehicle Electronic Architecture to be mission system ready.
It is intended to undertake a range of mission profiles, including troop movement, command and control, electronic warfare, liaison, surveillance and reconnaissance.[4] Prime contractors include: Thales Australia, Boeing Australia, Plasan (Israel) and PAC Group. In October 2015, the Australian Government announced the purchase of 1,100 Hawkei vehicles from Thales Australia.
As part of a wider project to replace the ADF's fleet of operational support vehicles, Project Land 121 Phase 4 - Protected Mobility Vehicle (Light) or PMV-L, is a requirement for up to 1,300 specialised light armoured vehicles to replace some of the in-service Land Rovers. Key criteria for the project included: off-road mobility, integrated vehicle electronic architecture, substantial payloads, high levels of protection against land mines, improvised explosive devices and ballistic weapons, while being light enough to be airlifted by military helicopters.
Hope you enjoy!!

These vehicles along with the Bushmaster are manufactured in my home town of Bendigo in Victoria. My business is a subcontractor to Thales. I get to drool over these vehicles every week. Here we’re all hoping this initial contract will only expand in future years. 👍🏼🇦🇺

Well if that's the case. If you even have the slightest fantasy of sending this stuff to Canada you are going to need to talks to someone like me. I have 30+ years in control systems and automation. Back in late 2017 through early 2018 I went to Canada to finish a project for an Australia Company. I ended up having to completely redesign the entire electrical and control system for Canadian standards. I was there through one of their winters and NOTHING you hear prepares you for it. I still remember the days just after Christmas 2017 when the entire middle region of Canada around Saskatchewan (where I was) was effectively in a lock down because of the weather. I woke up one day to every TV channel flashing alarms for the cold. I was in a small town in central Sask with the rest of the team back in Regina for Christmas. The message they gave me was simple - stay indoors and touch nothing made of metal that is connected to the outside like door knobs and window frames unless wearing gloves. Going outside for someone unprepared was lethal. The time to frostbite for exposed skin was something like 3-5 minutes. Unless you have experienced a Canadian Winter NOBODY can properly explain it to you and I never went to the far North were its even worse. EVERYTHING IN THAT VEHICLE WOULD NEED TO BE RECONSIDERED for CANADIAN conditions. When I mean everything I mean anything made of plastic, rubber and the cloth, oil, grease and even the bearings. The engine would need a complete overhaul including the cold weather hardware. You need to go right down to the paint and the welding. You need to think of it in terms of taking the worst of Australia's desert and then put minus signs in front of every number. FYI - I have worked in the Australian mining industry so I have seen how brutal that is first hand.

CRAZY being the appropriate word. I'm an engineer and I am NOT against our Army, Navy or Airforce upgrading nay part of their inventory, but they are being so idiotically stupid with some of the programs. Other than the insanity of the sub program and I am all for getting nuclear powered subs - ITS THE COST. There's also the new Frigates, which like the subs are a cost issue - we are paying 3x what the British Navy is paying for the same boat. There's also the new offshore patrol vessels which are not only MORE than 10x the cost of the previous vessels but will cost more to operate. That's just the Navy and it highlights the problem - PRICE GOUGHING combined with stupid bureaucrats and even stupider politicians surrounded by a legion of lobbyists with too much money.

Expanding on @aldis' point about the origin of the vehicle's name, something was off about it for me - the pronunciation used by the company representative and then by Matsimus (not your fault mate, I blame the private school spivs from their marketing department). Now I'm no scientician, but my many seconds of gruelling research suggests that it should be pronounced more like "HAWK-ee". I am further swayed in favour of this given that in Australian English, Bob Hawke was often shortened* to Hawkey (spelled like I just done spelled it, pronounced as above, or if you're a few beers in, pronounced: "HAWK-EEEEEEEEE!". * it is the venerable and honoured custom of my people to shorten words, names and phrases in this manner. Sometimes (as with Hawke) a short name will need to be lengthened though, to accommodate the vowel sound at the end. See Booney, Warney, and literally everyone called Davo (pr: DAY-vo; short for Dave, which is short for David).

hey mat, im a vehicle mechanic in the ADF and the hawkeis are currently not out of there teeth process, we have had alot of issues with the haweki currently in the fleet, e.g, ABS failures, spare tyre place placement. the land rovers role for the most part is replaced with the G wagon currently, not quite sure where the haweki fits into the role of the old land rover as its been replaced with the g wagon which fits most of the roles, potentally deployment i assume for more high risk areas but currently we use g wagon for general purpose vehicle as sort of an equivilant of i guess what the humvees were to the americans, id like to see where we fit the haweki into doctrine but for now they are for the most part stuck in workshops

One thing you missed that the Thales guy started referring to was the Hawkei has enormous electrical power and batteries. Recon vehicles now have so many sensors and radars etc, that they need way more electrical power than anything even 5 years older. There's been talk of increasing the batteries enough that in could creep around slowly on electrical power for up to 5km. A useful talent for a Recce Vehicle.

The batteries are Lithium Sodium sure it is a 25 to 30 percent decrease in capacity (for the same size pack!) but is much safer (Next to Impossible to catch Fire for any reason!) and longer lasting (Discharge Cycles!), They also handle extreme heat and cold better than Lithium meaning work better in Cold and Hot Zones meaning less Maintenace!

Great coverage of our Landrover replacement, Mat. Most people think of Australia as being hot deserts, but we do have an Alpine region, and Tasmania gets a lot of snow as well. We don't get as cold as Canada on the mainland. What I can't find out is whether it was designed to operate in the Australian Antarctic Territory, which does get a bit colder than Canada. As it's been said before, Australia is a land of extremes. In Western Australia , our hottest township is regularly getting above 50°C in summer. Some bright spark had the place officially named North Pole. There should be laws protecting us from such names, or it could have just as easily been called Frying Pan.
@teeanahera8949
@teeanahera8949 Жыл бұрын
It most definitely would not be designed to operate in Antarctica and there is no vehicular access to anywhere else in the Australian Antarctic Territory. Military vehicles are banned by The Antarctic Treaty, which came into effect on June 23, 1961, which bans military activity in Antarctica. Military vehicles can be used for day to day scientific purposes but Hawkei would be poorly suited to such a mission. Basically they use Winterised tractors.
@jamesevans886
@jamesevans886 Жыл бұрын
@teeanahera8949 Thanks for the reply, but please forget about the vehicle. As Mat is a Canadian who knows little of Australia and its range of temperatures from the continent and its territories. Most vehicles tested for cold or Arctic performance are tested in central Tasmania in deep winter and off road in the central mountain ranges are a big part of that. We often swap units with the British Army when they do their Arctic training in Norway as well. So we've had plenty of opportunities to test our kit under Arctic conditions over the years. One of our SASR Squadrons is tasked to be Cold specialists up to and including Arctic conditions, so those guys spend part of the year in Norway and another part of it in Tasmania. I agree with you that it's highly unlikely it's been tested under these conditions yet as our current strategic interests over the next 5 years are not inside the Arctic circle. Cheers

Around the Melbourne Thales Australia office there was a photoshop going around of a Hawkei with blacked out everything and low profile tyres. The styling of the armour package was done by Plasan and they paid a lot of attention to making it look fast. And the whole vehicle is held together with bolts so you can convert it into different configurations.
@MegaUnderscore

It's plagued with issues and is not providing the capability promised... Thales really screwed the pooch with this one. The engine is a repurposed marine engine (I don't know why they didn't just use caterpillar like in bushmaster) mounted back to front requiring a really bizarre mounting profile for the transmission which is causing pretty significant issues. The body panels (including the engine bay) is made of fiberglass and is not robust at all which means it is susceptible to being disabled by small arms, and because they are custom-made, the panels are very expensive to repair and replace. This also means only the crew cab is protected (up to stanag 4). The brakes are also plagued with issues (specifically ABS) which has already grounded the fleet and restricted its use. The pintle mount originally had issues supporting a 12.7mm and it is also now up to the ADF to integrate a remote weapon station with Thales not offering an option (this still hasn't been done). Also the spare tyre can't be carried on the vehicle and has to be carried in the accompanying trailer, I am not aware of the NASAAMs system being mounted into the trailer, last I was tracking was a bespoke Hawkei variant. The ADF has stopped taking receipt of them from Thales for the time being as well with hundreds sitting in a Thales compound in Bendigo. I will admit the power management and radio harness/ architecture is quite good though. Personally not a big fan of the vehicle overall at the moment.

The bushmaster had reliability problems as well, when it first kicked off, ADI/Thales obviously they fixed the issues. The ABS sounds like a computer issue so probably just a software update. Re: spare wheel. The 2018 Bushmaster ditched the spare tyre for more internal room. As it sounds like your involved with the ADF, I'm curious to know if the run flat tyres and tyre inflation system was designed to survive punctures through self sealing and tyre re-inflation, plus also run while deflated to get back to base, are you seeing any issues that you would still need a spare?

That does look impressive! Some additional kit that might be added to it is a bike rack (e.g. Google military e-bikes Australia). Also, with the advent of personal E-VTOLS it might also could be fitted to carry and service one of those as well (e.g. Google Jetson One). The E-VTOL could be equipped to carry a heavy weapon (say a TOW missile launcher) in lieu of a man and be employed as an elevated firing platform. The the mother ground vehicle could hide behind a building, hill, or tree line and fire from that elevated platform without exposing itself to direct fire. Thus one might add yet another mission, that of sag wagon for the two above.

Aussie here, it must be noted that this thing has been PLAGUED by issues since its introduction to service. Firstly, despite what that spokesperson was saying, soldiers have complained endlessly that this vehicle isn't well designed for sitting in whilst wearing body armour, which is operationally essential. Secondly, somehow there was no consideration as to where to fit a spare tyre on the vehicle itself, so every Hawkei has to tow a trailer JUST to carry a spare tyre. Thirdly, a while ago an issue was discovered with the reliability of the brakes, so the entire fleet had to be grounded meaning they couldn't drive off base and were limited to 40km/h on base. I've spoken to Cav guys who hate driving it and said that the maintenance required on them is intensive. Personally I think they were a huge procurement mistake and we should've gone with something else.

There is an article in the SMH that the Bushmaster had reliability problems early on in its production, plus many Army senior staff to grunts wanted to get rid of it until they went to Afghanistan and Iraq and was the first MRAP of all allied countries saving the lives of countless Australian and Dutch soldiers, now it's the darling of the Army and causes many Australians to be proud with its support to Ukraine (myself included). I guess when your lives are on the line, new kit is always treated with skepticism and rightly so, but the army also has to remember that the Bushmaster had reliability issues too. From what I read its a software issue controlling the brakes/anti lock braking system. The spare tyre issue can be fixed pretty easily by adding mounts to the rear but even on the Bushmaster, in 2018 the rear spare wheel was removed for more internal room, also the Bushmaster/Hawkei have run flat tyres and has a tyre inflation system which is resilient enough for tyre punctures and good enough to get you back to base. Not sure what can be done about the body armour situation and I'm not a soldier. One thing I like about Australia is if its not good enough, someone speaks out until it is.

Turrets that require the gunner to be exposed outside the vehicle is the source the greatest rates of fatalities. All examples should come with the remote controlled weapons turret. Besides keeping the gunner from getting his head blown off, it also allows the ability to use night vision and IR sights give increased utility over the Mark I eyeballs of the exposed gunner and the stabilized gun mounts hold on target better then two bare hands.

YAH finally saying bye to the old 110 defenders we have needed to upgrade since I was in service before 2005 but this is great kit it is more like a cross between the HUMMER and a Bushmaster in design and follows on with the V shape floors for protection against mines etc This was a big point in the Bushmasters design so from me with millions of miles in seeries 1 series 2 series 3 and 110 landys I wish this was about in my day as it would have been great.

Kitted with full level 3 STANAG plating with optional level 5 for IED protection, a main weapon station fit for a 40mm AGM and two rear swing mounts for LMGs all on a 6 cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, things a beast. Let alone the SAS, or SBS, or SRR and/or SFSG, plus "E" Squardon too. Or could be a very useful vehicle and used by the Royal Artillery Forward Obervation Gun's and Air Controllers too. Especially with the British Military are looking into, newer and larger heavy-lift drones. I dont understand why all these vehicles use foreign specialist motors. Using something like a cummins or Cat for example engine pack and ZF gearbox for example, would offer much greater parts availability and future proofability. For example when you buy a mack or any other truck, theres a standard engine bay essentially, meaning if you want a cat motor you can bolt it in. Which would also make battle field repairs more acheivable. IE you need an injector pump, easy pull it off the mack transport truck in the yard and chuck it in, etc or pull it off the gen pack. Ah well

UK has the Foxhound and soon Boxer for armoured wheeled vehicles. Interestingly I believe they are looking for something smaller, less armoured, to do the running about in. Foxhound is 71/2 tonnes with all the kit too. A bit tall, but comes with plenty of work space. Anything armoured is going to be heavy. Unless driving in a mine/IED or artillery target zone then driving about with armour is just expensive. Non are a tank, and tanks and APCs aren't fairing well with the latest portable anti armour Javelins. Is NBC ability still a requirement? Anyhow, I would think a 41/2 tonne vehicle with some pulling power would do better. Cheaper too. A Jeep/Land Rover with small protection compartment and take a bigger payload. Like the Foxhound have mission specific bolt ons and same goes for a the trailer. BTW, the wheels for these vehicles are big and tough, and not something that can be changed at the side of the road in a jiffy. Maybe the answer is a Willy's Jeep, everyone gets one and they aren't worth a missile???? Want armoured then a Bren Gun Carrier????!!

I bet they do. Just shouldn't need doing very often. Heavy vehicles can do roads, and the dry. Wet they just sink. Thing is a military needs to travel on both. Reason for both wheels and tracks. Spend the big money on armour for the combat area, and go light for all the rest. The combat area becomes increasingly lethal, and everywhere else is light armoured "policing" where armour is survive some shrapnel and someone emptying a magazine on the cab. There isn't anything that can do "full protection'" from every thing now. Well not like the Matilda in 1940. Mechanically bomb proof is another contentious issue. Vehicles should be easy to maintain. Big subject. @@rhetth-s8082
