Nice to see that the venerable 105 is still in service. Much of my time with 2 RCA in the 1970s was spent crewing the C1 variant.

As a 0811 - USMC Field Artillery. I served in a M198 battery, 155 mm. We would train on 105's once a year. This was between 1982 - 1986. The 105's breaches had 1945 - 1947 dates stamped in them. Compared to the155 mm, it was so light and easy to move around by hand. We loved it.

For what it's worth, my maternal grandfather, and his brother were both gunners in the RCA during the Second World War. Grandfather was posted to a coastal artillery station in Sydney Harbour in Nova Scotia. These stations ringed Sydney Harbour and the approaches to Sydney itself. They were equipped with 6-pounder (6pdr) Quick FIring (QF) naval guns and search lights. Their job, of course, was to detect and destroy any enemy ships or submarines attempting to enter the harbour. These coastal artillery stations remained in service until 1954, although my grandfather had left the army some time before the war ended. His brother was part of a self-propelled artillery unit and he was involved in the fighting on D-Day and in the subsequent battles to liberate the Netherlands. His war diary, all four pages of it, recounts how Canadian artillery units in his area of operations were lobbing 13,000 shells per hour at German positions not long after landing in Normandy. He stayed in the army after the war, and was part of the armistice observer force in Korea. He finished his career as Squadron Sergeant Major (SSM) of 4 RCHA (4th Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery). Quo fas et gloria ducunt! Ubique!

Not a gunner, but a Weapons Tech. Never got the chance to fire one, and I'm not qualified to work on the C3 by myself, but I have helped another tech work on them over the past few summers while I was attached to CI 2 DIV in Valcartier (Class B reservist). Lots of doodads and neat gadgets to inspect them with, but 99% of the time you just need a wrench or ratchet to work on these things. Simplicity at its finest. Seeing this thing completely disassembled is fascinating.

Used to work on theses guns at Ci 2 Div Form 2020 trought 2022 as RegF. Real Easy to work on, but the lack of spare parts realy hinders the maintenance and servicability of the Howitzer. Had to make a whole year project with the LCMM just so we can get brand new made wheel bearing seals because there were no one left at the depot anywhere in canada. for me this gun is a Love Hate situation... Hated it because the lack of spare parts and not technicaly challenging but loved it beause it was easy and fast to work on and be left alone while working on it because not alot of people have the knowledge from a technical standpoint to properly do maintenance on them anymore.

Great video. In Chile we use the same modernization packet by RDM on our M1 105s, the work being done locally by FAMAE. The main reason was to increase range. I think they actually can shoot longer distances than a Russian 122mm howitzer. These things are so tough that they can go on forever. We already have a modern Israeli firecontrol system so instead of changing them for a new gun I think you should just put them on a truck, portee style, instead of towing them. Several armies have truck portee systems for old 105mm guns: South Korea, Vietnam, Servia, even Colombia made a prototype. The fact 105s are being used in Ukraine demonstrates they are still a valid weapon system.

Nice seeing the 105mm being used for positive missions. Towed or mounted in a mechanical mode, I appreciate the primary gun functions are being practical and at a reduced cost. More armies should consider ways to make continual basic and continual training while keeping lower cost. Up gunning to different tubes for trained gunners is not that difficult. Great video M.

Well, I think You will soon be training on the Bohdana 155 mm self propelled: It is a cheap, battle tested system. The main artillery problem is the quality of the ammunition: Does it fly true and does it go BOOM where it is intended.

Great vid M. Do you have, or could you do, a 10-15 minute vid on how the sights work for indirect? Something that a non-arty person could comprehend. Basically, can you walk through the process from when a Forward observer sends in a set of coordinates of what they want destroyed. And then what? OK, someone figures out the range and bearing, and then what? Etc.

As an FO, have they solved the problem of command and control so that an observer has a decent chance of hitting a moving target? As you know, a moving enemy requires “leading” your fires so that the target and the shells try to occupy the same ground at the same time. So the FO needs to know the time from call for fire to impact so they can attempt to estimate when to make that call. A dedicated battery to your unit and a “ at my command” would work, but the FA battalion doesn’t like to relinquish that much control- or at least that was an issue in the mid-80’s. I would love to see a video to explain how old school “charts and darts”, and “laying” a battery leads to first rounds on target. You don’t have to get into the math of calculating a fire command, but show how the FDC does their thing. Then show how the XO gets all pieces pointing the same way with an aiming circle. This might enable a little respect towards the complexities of indirect fires.

My issue with the C3 was when they put a heavier barrel on it they did not upgrade the carriage and suspension so they are wearing out and while there are lot of spare parts available internationally for the original configuration the only country I can think of with the C3 is Canada and Canada dos not represent a large enough market for manufacturers to have readily available spare parts - All in all I think the C3 "upgrade" was a questionable idea

Spent 3 years in a M101a1 '05 battery in the Marines. Loved that thing. We could get in and out fast on the offensive and support patrols from fortified positions. You could effectively run the gun with 3 cannon cockers and one driver but 4 to 6 was the norm. Rate of fire was high with a good A gunner "rocking the cradle". It filled a niche between mortars and the M114 155mm. The '98s came in during the '80s and no more '05s. The '05s we had all were made in the 1940s and you could feel their soul and history. Rumor had it that they all ended up in Iran during the Iran/Contra debacle. The '98s were Army hand me downs and felt more like a machine than a weapon. Weapon technology advances and warfare changes. I still would prefer going to war with light '05s and staying mobile to support the grunts, likely the next combat will be sea and island combat against China in the Pacific which will rely on much longer range missiles and rockets and most Marine batteries are giving up their guns for HIMAR systems.

Got turned down for the military but my Great Granddad Frank was a gunner on a 25 Pounder back in World War 2 so its good to see its descendants still helping out, especially after I was told around 15 years ago that field guns were obsolete because of drones, MANPATS/MANPADS and precision close air support/helicopters (something the war in Ukraine seems to be disputing). Still, I also use pictures in my PowerPoints to provide visual cues when discussing political/social theory and it seems the scantily clad women help my audience grasp hard concepts.

The South Koreans and Vietnamese plopped M101s on the back of trucks with good results. If the CAF weren't so top heavy with incompetent brass and bureaucracy heavy, they could ratchet strap this museum piece on the back of a ford 350 super duty and you'd have a far more useful set up for high intensity conflict at very low cost in comparison to fielding newly purchased self-propelled arty. Both Trudeaus have left the CAF so emaciated it's no wonder why Canadians don't see the point in serving. It's a shame really. This country used to be really great.

In this age of unmanned drone, usefulness of 105mm howitzer should be re-appreciated. No longer used by artillery battery and replaced by 155mm howitzer. But its range (12km-20km) and destructive power are optimal for artillery firepower that will be operated by infantry battalion or company level, used in conjunction with small reconnaissance drones. Currently, 81mm mortar is used by firepower support company of infantry battalion. It should be replaced with a self-propelled 105mm howitzer.

Can it fold up nice with the gun elevation going to 180 degrees? That would be cool if it does. I believe the cost of re-opening 105mm ammo factories is outweighed by the benefits the 105mm provides durring prolonged LSCO. The future of the 105 arty will be anti-landmine and anti-air "super smart ammo" as a gimmick and keeping the 105 howi's in low-scale service till 2060's (just in case 😊😅😂!).

Bro…. Don’t pull that card…. I could find thousands of pictures and know of many reg force troops in just about every trade buying and using and deploying and training in their own store bought tac vests…. So I wouldn’t worry about the reservists getting away with anything.
