The biggest complaint I heard from Wildcat pilots when I was in the RN, was that for some unfathomable reason, Wildcat wasn't equipped with LINK 16. As such, any data transfer from the helo to the ship or vice-versa had to be done using the Mk I birth-issued voicebox. All those fancy sensors, just for the Flight Observer to have to relay information by voice...

I believe Link 16 has been retro fitted in 2024 and ongoing which is going to be a game changer in capability going forward.

Lynx are Very VERY quick choppers, one held world record at 400km per hour this variant is slower at 190 plus mph, but still a quick beast with all those peripherals
@ZuulGatekeeper
@ZuulGatekeeper 15 сағат бұрын
Lynx still holds the record the Eurocopter X3 & Sikorsky X2 are slightly faster but are hybrids not helicopters as they employ additional mounted turboprops like a regular plane. What's impressive is the Lynx was that fast despite being a military copter it was built like a tank with high resistance to battle damage.

I flew with the test pilot that brought the Wildcat and the Apache into the Army Aircorps. He really rated it as a naval helicopter, but scoffed at it for ever being considered a battlefield helicopter that we needed. We should have just bought a job lot of Blackhawks.

On another note, It would be great if you were able to at some point, do a full piece on our Legacy Hawker Siddley Harrier Jump Jet and its development through to its Service etc. Anyway once again, Cheers.👍

I’ve a real fondness for the lynx. As a kid in Northern Ireland, close to the border the arrival of the lynx was like something from a movie. Compared to the almost genteel flying of the RAF Wessex and Pumas the army air corp Lynx pairs were flown like they were stolen.

I'd have to say my favourite naval helicopter is the Kamov Ka-27 which I always knew as the Helix, but that's pretty much down to playing a lot of Command & Conquer Generals Zero Hour when I was younger and China was my favourite side to play due to their artillery (same reason I liked the Imperial Guard best in the Dawn of War games as they had Basilisk field guns) but still. Definitely an interesting video, especially as naval helicopters aren't something I'm as familiar with so it was a good watch and interesting to see the approach taken compared to land based helicopters, I still remember my Great Uncle who was in the RAF in the 1960s deployed to Zambia when they'd newly become independent and helping them reconfigure their old British equipment to be able to communicate with the new equipment they'd bought from the USSR. Technology is interesting.

The Bell AH-1 Cobra was my first Helicopter love. AH-1Z Viper is still probably my second favourite, but I think I have to give my top spot to the CH-113 Labrador. Both of my parents worked on it when they worked at Boeing Arnprior Division. They used to land in the water and open the doors to test if the seals were good and then take off and fly back to the Arnprior Airport for transfer back to the hangars for inspection.

A great aircraft. Also a very informative video. However, the Wildcat’s primary role in RN use is not really anti submarine warfare, but anti surface warfare and force protection. The Merlin is the main sub hunter for the RN and for the Wildcat this is very much a secondary role.

Is that 3 postings today? You are a busy man. The Lynx Wildcat is also far more stylish than the one chopper I had the pleasure of contracting for a project…a Sikorsky helicopter (S-61?). We needed a heavy lift chopper to lift super sacks filled with boulders we needed to place for erosion control in Posey Canyon that drains into Pyramid Lake, California. The work was at about 1,200 meter elevation in weather that got up to 128° Fahrenheit, which meant they couldn’t fly every day.

I'm not sure if you consider this to be exactly at "Naval" helicopter, but it definitely can and does operate from ships. My pick is the AH-1 Cobra, and by extension the more modern AH-1Z Viper. When I heard about the Air Force and Navy conducting experiments in the Gulf with using A-10s to respond to small boat swarm threats, I immediately wondered why they would rely on waiting for land-based aircraft to respond when they could be carrying a handful of these AH-1s which could be immediately on station by virtue of being carried by the ships as they pass through the region.

Hi, I do enjoy your films, but you kinder suggested that the Royal navy Wildcat was a great Sub hunter near the end of your video when unfortunately its not, unless the sub is surfaced or at periscope depth. It has no subsurface sensors, It looked like the Wildcat in your video was South Korean which does have them. You do point this out in your video description, :) But thanks for your videos

Maybe the RCN should get these for the Arctic Patrol ships as they are more versatile than CH 148 from the Halifax frigates. The CAF could also use a modern light helicopter for the army as well.
@jameson1239
@jameson1239 5 күн бұрын
The CH-148 is larger than this so has more space and I believe longer range we should have bought the AW-101 from the beginning but we didn’t so we’re stuck with the cyclone

But the Wildcat is smaller and will take up less space in the hanger and can be reconfigured to several roles. This would give the Arctic Patrol Ships a more capable helicopter.

The Lynx/Wildcat n Merlin are 2 of my favourite helis!! Both in terms of looks n performances. Only wish more countries will purchase them in bulk so that UK's manufacturers can keep the cost down for further future improvements or creations. Hate to see UK's heli industry suffer the fate of its past fixed winged counterparts. I mean the days of independent aircraft manufacturing before consortium creations like Tornados n Typhoons. Since u r on the topic of the Wildcat, can u cover the new Martlet n Sea Venom missles? And is there any chance to use them on land? Can u also cover the H225M, the descendant of the Super Puma? I believe the RAF is looking for a future medium transport replacement n ive always thought the H225M would be a good fit... if they have the budget for them. 😢

RN version needs the dipping sonar option that the ROKN use on theirs. I guess we never bought it incase the Tresuary started questioning the need for these & Merlin. The Army version should be transferred fully to the RN for use in support of the RM. The army should buy another bigger LUH. Either that or all army versions should also be radar & LMM equipped. That however could put Apache at risk from the tresuary again.

Short summary of what I've read: It's small because it needs to fit into ships hangars and it's small enough that some ships can host 2 and always have 1 in the air. Small size is not what the army wants obviously and the Army is the loser here - the Navy couldn't buy enough to justify the purchase on its' own so the Army was forced into accepting something it didn't really want. It apparently has only 1 pilot which some people complain about - too small to have much redundancy. One reason why some ships seem under armed but aren't is that they have a helicopter which is a potent weapon. The Merlin is perhaps a more fearsome sub hunter with extremely long range but ships can usually only host one. The component count has drastically reduced through the use of large composite structures that are made in 1 piece. I read that there have been troubles with it and yet what aircraft has no troubles at the beginning? What were they? Have they been solved? I couldn't find any information. Is it now in a period of stability ?? No idea.

When I think of the future of vertical take off and landing aircraft, it's really hard to see how any traditional helicopter can compete with tilt rotor aircraft in terms of speed , fuel economy , safety and lift for a given amount of fuel . The baffling idea to vent the exhaust gas from the engines up into the composite rotor blades, providing a down force on the aircraft that is trying to get as much force pushing it up as possible while at the same time heating up the rotor blades to make a bigger target for IR seeking missiles is something I can't begin to understand .
