Try the hour rule. If you start to procrastinate, make a rule that whatever you're putting off you can either do it or sit and do nothing, absolutely nothing for an hour. After 20 minutes of doing absolutely nothing you'll realise its better to be getting on with whatever you were procrastinating from.

Thanks for trying. :-) I have to say however, as a long time procrastinator this did not fit for me at all. I had the feeling that you never truly suffered from the type severe procrastination that I and others have. I often feel that many people don't or maybe they just have a milder version. If all it takes is telling yourself that you need a bigger challenge or rephrasing the tasks - then congratulations! You found a way to fool yourself easily into doing the tasks. However, in this case you are really the polar opposite of many procrastinators. But if you really have problems with it, it is almost debilitating. I realize that the reasons are probably different for everybody, so I will talk only from my perspective. To me, I procrastinate most on tasks that I don't feel I am good enough to do perfectly or tasks that I don't know enough about to do them well. Also a big factor - my emotional reactions to those tasks. I build them up in my head, or rather my gut, to be bad/annoying/hard until I have a strong emotional aversion when I just start to think of them. When the pressure of a deadline has become so unbearable that I have no choice but to do them, I will and often even do them fairly well but I need the extreme pressure to get started and stick to it. And I would have probably done a much better job had I started sooner. This is very harmful and extremely exhausting. Everything in my life felt like I made it much harder for myself, like e.g. my master's degree or getting ahead in my career. I have been trying to find a way out of this for decades. All the self help books didn't help with that. Some advise to "just do it" or "just get started" or "just do it for 10 mins", many say "make to do lists" or - like you - "have more detailed to do lists". These don't address the underlying issue and for me never worked. I am not saying I have a solution, I am still looking for one. I assume it has a lot do with me being a perfectionist and a people pleaser. Not wanting to look bad in front of others and probably some self esteem issues deep down. This got way longer than it should, but I just wanted to give you a different perspective as you don't really seem to suffer from the same kind of procrastination as I do. Also, for others who have similar issues: don't feel bad if all these tips in this video or the self help books don't work for you. You are not alone.
@adityaverma6120

You sound a lot like me. One thing that helps me is I spend time in learning/practicing the tools needed to better in those tasks that I've been afraid to do (scare of imperfection). I'm a programmer and I'd like to give a simple example related to it: Whenever I have an assignment/project, I feels really scary at first if there a new library/framework/language needed for it. So what I do is spend a few days in perfecting the library/framework/language needed. And then I start the project, which I do with utmost perfection in my view. Needless to say, this only works If I start things in time. For that emotional aversion you mentioned, I used to have it a lot. I've recognized it many times and also traced the reason for it -> a bad experience. It's just a past bad experience related to the task you might have that is creating those emotions. All you need is a fresh start for that topic. Start afresh, forget everything, and you will be once again start enjoying it. This all works for me. But I still procrastinate many times xD. Still struggling, figuring out things, hoping to get better with time :)

I have always felt like this as well and was diagnosed with ADHD at 23. Don't give up on yourself though. I almost did for the past 2 years which was a very dark time for me but the unhappiness pushed me to change things in my life. This year, I've accomplished so much more than I ever thought I would. It's never easy by any means but we just have to keep pushing ourselves and trying different things. That said, I came to this video because I was slipping into a pit of anxiety-fuelled procrastination again. I decided to search for a Matt D'Avella video because he's usually very motivating for me. So there's never a permanent solution, it's always going to be a constant battle - for most of us I think, but especially for those of us with ADHD. And that's okay, I realized that working hard is not the enemy. I can easily work very very hard when it's something I'm very passionate and excited about and it feels great so I just need to find a way to channel that same energy into the things I have to do. The thing about motivational videos and self-help books is that they oversimplify everything massively. If it was that simple, there wouldn't be an entire industry built around it. There are so many factors involved in why we procrastinate and how to overcome it, I found that the only thing that I can say consistently helps is trying different things, being patient with yourself and persevering in overcoming the difficulties even when it's hard. Books and videos do at least motivate me temporarily to work hard and be productive when I need a push. Make sure have a good support system and don't neglect your mental health or allow yourself to succumb to that feeling of being completely overwhelmed or fall into a pit of guilt and self-loathing! Practicing mindfulness has helped me with things like that. Whenever I start to feel super anxious and overwhelmed, I try to take a step back and think about why I'm feeling that way, and usually I find that my nervous system is just overreacting to something that's not that bad. And reframing what I'm doing helps too, to remind myself that I really do love what I'm working on and the fear of failure is making me hate it. I'm sure there are a lot of things out there that help, if only a little. Just don't give up. There are things that help, even if only a little, for only a short time, but the only way to really fail is to give up. I should add that medication has never really worked out for me because I can't tolerate any of the side effects. Those of us with ADHD have to work a lot harder than neurotypical people to get the same things accomplished but it is not impossible! (Sorry I didn't mean to write an essay lol, but just more proof that I can work really hard and focus when I'm feeling passionate haha and I'm sure you can too!)

Something that's been helpful for me is procrastinating with more productive methods that are more positive preoccupations rather than aimlessly wasting time, I learn things or do creative stuff that benefits me rather than aimless procrastination ☺️ you're allowed to procrastinate but it's all about balance and making sure you don't over procrastinate ☺️ don't be too hard on yourself too, allow yourself to do things that aren't super productive, like spending time with family or friends or allowing yourself to spend a day or and hour watching Netflix or playing video games etc ☺️ it's each to their own but don't just brand all things non-productive to your main aspirations as automatically bad/negative, just make sure you only procrastinate selectively and being concious of you choosing to procrastinate occasionally rather than on autopilot ☺️❤️ I hope this is helpful to someone ❤️

This is crazy I just put out a video called "the truth why we waste time and procrastination" yesterday! Love the message of this video, I tackle it from a slightly different angle. I think the key to our time-wasting is that by wasting time we are actually buying time to avoid deeper issues in our lives. So my solution is to actually reduce the need for avoidance! I aspire to get to this level one day Matt!

I need to work on my school project and it's definitelly the "too hard" situation, I'm incredibly anxious whenever I think about it, I'm full of guitl every evening when I go to sleep knowing I didn't do anything all day... It's so frustraiting and I feel worse every day because of it, but when I finally try and work on the project, I'm so anxious I can't even write a sentece... I tried doing smaller tasks but I guess I didn't try enough. It's really overwhelming...

I was listening to a podcast that said, “it’s important to live life by design rather than emotion. Basically, sticking to a routine is what allows us to be the healthiest version of ourselves (especially when you're fighting these demons ex. OCD for me). I’ve had to overhaul how I approach studying, working out and taking care of my brain (journaling) by practising mediocre consistency. Now I try to put in consistent 50-60% effort into my studying, exercise and journaling habit - to make sure I do it I began recording it and posting it on YT. Because historically I have a habit of going too hard, not being able to sustain the Herculean effort, giving up and hating myself. So now I’m trying to give a small, consistent mediocre effort everyday. And its crazy how it adds up.

Shifting the default mode negative narrative towards the thing you’re procrastinating on into a positive one by realizing the fact that we as humans naturally gravitate towards the most rewarding activities (neurochemicals) with the least amount of effort, and so that the procrastination merely is a response to a negative association towards the task. It’s really about flipping the script and realizing that what you’re procrastinating on is not that bad, but weighed against other very appealing (easy and stimulating) activities it will seem horrible 😅

As much as I also want that to happen--I doubt he will. That's so not Matt, he's not into journaling and meditating (only does it when he really needs to, like when being stuck in a rut or when having some personal issues but not on a regular basis), He's not into "zen" things, the closest thing that I would consider a zen thing--or atleast the closest thing to a zen thing that he does is minimalism. Of course these are just what I have gathered from all of his videos, I'm don't know him personally and I based these off what I see of him as a fan. Maybe coffee and minimalism talks would be much more accurate.
