This breed has hair that grows fast and never stops growing. Just allowed to grow unmaintained for 6 months results in solid full body matting, I would imagine this to be about 2yrs growth in filthy conditions.

I'm so glad they did his trim under light anesthesia; if he's been neglected this long, being trimmed could be scary. I wish people would take into account that some breeds MUST have consistent grooming. We've adopted dogs who shed naturally, but our smallest dog (in my profile pic) grows fur so fast, she'd end up horribly matted if she were ever neglected.

I doubt it. A small dog this sweet and socialized would likely approach people and get scooped-up. And having owned shih tzu, they wouldn't survive in the wild for more than a few minutes! I haven't seen a dog this matted myself, but I've seen very matted dogs and they're often owned by an elderly shut-in who feeds them and loves them, but doesn't groom them and either can't or won't afford the money to have them groomed. He's sure in the right hands now!

@@pullybungieharder When long-haired pets with doublecoat don't get groomed constantly, they mat. If you don't remove the matts, they will encapsulate more and more hair and grow over the whole body. Under these matts, often excema, skin fungus and rashes occur. Also the weight of the matts constantly drags on the skin and causes constant pain. So when you consider getting a longhaired pet, it's your duty to do the regular sufficient grooming. Otherwise the pets will suffer.

It reminds me of seeing documentaries where a person goes for weight loss surgery, in the same way of revealing a dramatic immediate difference that brings them relief. Carrying all that fur would be just like carrying too much extra weight (extreme obesity that is).

Just looking at the before pictures of this little guy brought tears to my eyes. It took a while for that hair to grow like that. Nobody saw him before that? Thank you to the vet assistants that worked so diligently to help this little guy! You all did great! The after pictures are wonderful! What a sweet little guy! Smaller breeds like this tend to live longer. I had two small breed dogs miniature Pinchers. One lived 16 years and one lived 19 years. Hopefully they'll have a good number of years together.

He might’ve been lost and living on his own which may not have been anyone’s fault. My neighbors lost their dog because he was afraid of fireworks and took off and he lived on his own for 4 months and was skin and bones when he was finally captured. Things happen. So lucky he never got wet, we had a dog come in and once we started shaving him he had tons of maggots under his matted fur. (I'm a vet tech, we always get the fun jobs). The dog I worked on was fine, he had to heal for a couple weeks but had a good home to go to!

I heard before that the reason why dogs shiver so much after they have a drastic change like this is because it’s a shock to the system, from having so much hair and it pulling down on you to so much less weight when it’s taken off. 👍

this dog looks more like he's from a neglectful home rather than the streets. these immobilizing fur mats tend to grow on dogs in animal hoarding situations where (mentally ill) people do nothing but feed the animals. I don't think that dog would have survived to that point on the street, and he probably would have gotten picked up by somebody earlier if he hadbeen outside.
