Old dogs can develop doggy dementia and therefore get very scared and aggressive - they don't mean to be but they revert to instinct and get defensive. Dede i think you did a sterling job to get all that horrible matted hair off in what must have been a really stressful situation. The training, if they do it, will help as will a strong routine.

Pam Castillo Please try to remember that dog is a rescue dog that was found by her new owners in a state of severe neglect and abuse. That little dog would be used to possible harsh screaming and yelling and other abuses . That little dog may have never heard one word of praise her entire dog life prior to her new very kind and loving and compassionate wise new dog parents . She deserves every ounce of patience and praise that groomer and her dog parents gave her. Dogs that have never been praised deserve praise . I have a rescue dog myself and she is on her way to healing because of my patience and my praise of her and my consistent care of her. Did you not hear the groomer saying how much physical pain the dog was in because of her mats all over her very small delicate and thin body. Matted dogs feel much pain when mats are being removed . So naturally what hurts is going to be met with much resistance . Every dog and every human resists pain . The groomer said she was to thin . If she is to thin then she lost bone denisty prior to her new owners taking over her care. That little dog more than deserves ever ounce of praise and patience both the groomer and her very patient dog parents gave her . She was in much pain the entire time she was being groomed. It takes very special people to take over the care of a dog with many issues. You can’t train a rescue dog that’s been abused the same way you can other dogs . They have to be trained differently . Your level of patience and care and compassion have to be at 110 percent when it comes to a rescue dog. I know because I rescued one that is on the road to recovery . My dog will never again suffer emotional or physical pain and she is becoming obedient naturally because I earned her trust . I for one admire all the praise the groomer and the dog parents gave that dog.

I have a 9 pound cat who would fight me so hard I was deathly afraid he'd snap a leg. This dog reminded me of that. They're small and fragile but that adrenaline pumps and they contort. But if I trained him to not bite or fight while clipping his claws, this dog can learn too. They just have to put in the effort.

P&T how about you give it a go and see if you can do any better. If you can’t then keep those sort of comments until you can do a better job! Believe it or not just because she is a small dog and looks fragile she will have unbelievable strength due to fright or flight process. She obviously has had some very bad experiences whilst being groomed by poorly trained groomers. I have a one yr old Jack Russell Whippet cross. He looks more whippet than Jack Russell and he detests bath time even though he has had regular baths since I got him at 8weeks. Even my husband is amazed at his strength.

It is crazy how wirey and strong those little dogs are. Both pet parents are nervous to hurt the dog. (I don't blame them, the dog is small) That is why he is having trouble to hold her. My little one about the same size got nailed by a porcupine (only a few quills) and on the weekend. I like pretty much in the sticks so no, there is not a vet available 24/7 without hours of travel and a long wait for call-out. So no haters please... Anyway... she had a few quills in her face. 2 in the lip and one dead center of her nose. It took 3 of us to remove these. We had to burrito wrap her. One holding the burrito wrapped body, one holding the head & one to pull the quills. It was all over and done with in a few seconds but prep took forever. My shih-tzu also touched a porcupine. Same situ .. weekend and no vet. Only a few quills but these were in his paws. Front paws between his toes. Had my dad hold him. My dad was strong as a bull and 300 pounds os solid strength. He had a hell of a time holding him while I pulled the quills. When those little dogs freak... they are nuts to try holding. Crazy squirmy bundles of flying fur, teeth and claws along with sounds coming from them that sound like the devil himself. lol.... Anyway.. they were both fine after their little encounters with the porcupine. I was able to get most of the quills out immediately after they got hit because I pulled all what I could while we were still in the bush. Those ones were easy because no swelling started yet.

I feel for everyone involved in this. Dede had a job and a half & did great. The adoptive parents want what’s best for this little, older dog, amd they know they cannot be too forceful with her, what with her age, tiny frame, and her level of fear. If they hold her too tightly, they could damage her.The little dog has been traumatized first by being a stray and found in horrible condition, and then by having a traumatic experience at a precious groomers. I believe the parents have learned that they must do as much as possible when grooming the dog at home. Good job to everyone, even this frightened, older, teeny dog. 🐶💞

When they are that small, it is twice as hard to hold as there is little to get a hold of. Next time should be much easier for all as it won't be matted but I'm thinking it is always going to dislike having its head worked on but with their patience, training & reward, it will learn to tolerate it. Great job from all of them and all their effort and patience.
