Well thank you! It was a 6 year long project! I use the bodies from TeamBlueGrove. They are very well made. I have a lot of their shells on my cars. Here is the link to the MB version. You are right on there. It's not always necessary to have ultra high performance motors. A lot of fun can be had with a mild motor. I give you an example. I put a 15 turn motor into a Tamiya Hornet. It was too much. The poor little Hornet went from looking beautiful and shiny to looking old and scuffed up because the car couldn't handle that motor. The Hornet kept rolling over and landing on its roof , then I returned the original Tamiya silver can motor and it was beautiful , drove so much better. The Hornet would roll over if I turned the steering suddenly. Conversely I put the same motor in a new Fox ( Nova Fox ) and that Fox handles so much better than the Hornet. But yes you are 110% correct. These are 30-40 year old designs from Tamiya. And they were not meant to have extra high performance. More for fun . These days we can buy ready to run cars straight out of the box and they travel very fast but to me they lack soul. They are not like a Tamiya kit that we can invest time into . I love Tamiya. Ever since I was 13-14 years old and I'm now 50 . Keep the great work coming Matteo I'm subscribed 👌👍💪

Mich freut es immer wieder die sehr gut gemachten Videos von Dir zu sehen . Da steckt viel Arbeit drin .Super gemacht ! Auch ich hatte mal in den 90ern einen Monster Beetle und dann mit dem Hobby eine Zeit aufgehört und alles verkauft. Ein großer Fehler aber so war es damals. Thanks for sharing Matteo. Yes, honestly, I think brushless motors are to much for many Tamiya rerelease cars and trucks. To me, it takes the fun out of the vehicle. Honestly, I never had any problem with my blackfoot tranny back in the days. I installed a Revtech super stock motor back in the days and my blackfoot ran flawlessly. I guess I had some luck with my blackfoot. After seeing so many of your videos I'm thinking of buying another blackfoot. But since I had one back in 90' I'm thinking of getting a Monster beetle since I never had the chance to own one back in the day. Thanks Matteo for your hardwork. You never seem to disappoint! Thanks Christopher! Absolutely agree with your words! In all my classic Tamiyas I use the stock motors and it's fun enough! This one I only changed to test the MIP gears. The best way for you is to get a Blackfoot and a Monster Beetle! 👍😊

17.5 is just about right for more of them, big boost in torque without making them too fast. And that extra torque is why you need upgraded gears, even a 17.5 will have more than hot motors from back in the day.

I have the original Monster Beetle...I think plastics will not handle that kind of power...That little car remind me when I was a boy, was my first Tamiya RC every time I see it I remember my childhood and my grandfather who help me build it. I think many people that are now in their late 30's or first 40´s have the same feeling about their first Tamiya, im glad I still have it...and the second one..and the third one...hahahah

Hey Man... Well done...I just finished putting together my 2016 Blackfoot, with full ball bearings, and a SPORT TUNED motor. Only about ten battery packs in, I already have the nerve tingling crunching sound that all BLACKFOOT/MONSTER BEETLE owners hear. It is the same sound I heard from my 1986 edition...I would have guessed they would have upgraded the differential for the re-release, but no...so I just ordered my ball-diff. Time for me to do the same thing you just did.

Great video sir, I remember using thorp setup on a Tamiya Mudblaster in the 90’s to cope with Trinity motors. Brushless technology is the future now. Castle creations make awesome setups I use this company in my traxxas emaxx.

Nothing more fun than a Tamiya with more power than it was ever designed for ! Seemed to handle it pretty well and the ball diff looks like a well engineered bit of kit. I've got a Kamtec lexan beetle shell for my Sand Scorcher as a basher and it's quite tough. Made me wince to hear the sound of your MB rolling over with the lovely hard body shell. Nice. I like your work Matteo. The rear wishbone set up by Ampro Engineering does make the car much more stable in turns. I have mounted my steering servo in the centre and put TRF shocks on my beetle. It handles much better. I haven't installed my MIP diff yet though.

Great video!! I agree, the MIP ball diff is an excellent upgrade for any MB or BF but brushless motors are too powerful for this chassis/gearbox. I'm currently performing a light restoration of an original MB and going to run the MIP ball diff with a vintage Technigold brushed motor.

Tamiya kits are great to build, the bodies are nice and detailed. But that's about it, just put it on a shelf an enjoy the view. And in time they will fetch good money too at least the '80 releases did. My litle Latrax Teton BL with ball diffs will run circles around the MB all day on 2s even (3s is scary tho) Still nice to see you enjoy it nice vid, thumbs up

That diff should work in a Frog or Subaru too, same gearbox I'm sure. I wonder what it would have been like if brushless motors and Lipo's were around 25 years ago? I'm getting back into the hobby it's changed greatly since I bought my first Frog in 1990.

Yes, the gearbox in Frog and Brat are nearly the same. But because of the bigger tires the Blackfoot and Monster Beetle have different gear ratios. It means the pinion and spur gear is not the same, and this requires additional parts to install the MIP diff. Sometimes I long back for the good old times... Only silver cans and Technigolds and 5 min run time.... Thanks for your good feedback!

When you assemble a ball diff, you should rotate the diff at the same time you tighten the main screw, so the ball bearings won't make small dents in the washers. After assembly, you should loosen the main screw slightly, so the diff can rotate without binding.

Go for a 3000kv 3652 Motor at 2s Lipo in the Monster Beetle (with the MIP Diff). 40min runtime with 5Ah battery. 38km/h Top speed. Motor is NOT hot after 90min running time (2 battery packs) ! MUCH more fun than stock brushed motor :) Robitronic Razer 3000kv combo costs only 50 bucks and fits PERFECTLY. I never had such a WIDE TAMIYA GRIN on my face as today with the BL combo :)

Crazy fast with that castle brushless motor, no need to go back to brushed motors. Just fit a ezrun 3650 3000kv or 3300kv motor, if the castle motor is to powerful for it.

I would run like a 17.5t sensored 2 pole brushless motor with the tble-02s on this ORV platform, chassis just not stable enough. the only tamiyas I have tried that handles a castle 3800kv 1410 is either a Madbull (with oil shocks) or newer DT-03 buggies.

Well-done and with useful comments. One suggestion: replace the Molex/Tamiya battery connector with something less lossy. Those connectors are OK at the beginning, but with very few cycles, the contacts loosen up, which leads to a high impedance connection. You will know this is happening when you disconnect the battery and feel that the connectors are warm or hot. I have switched my whole fleet over to EC5, as they can handle a lot of current. In hindsight, EC3 or XT60 would have been more appropriate and easier to plug/unplug. As an electrical engineer, the idea of losing power and creating heat in a connection is unacceptable to me. Even with the stock Mabuchi 540 motor, I don't like to throw power away. By the way, I wonder what is a "mild brushless" motor replacement for the Mabuchi 540? Something that gives maybe 25% more speed, but also with higher efficiency. Maybe the overall length would be shorter, or maybe they would just waste some space inside the can to make it the same overall length?

Thanks for your good feedback! Yes, it's correct, Tamiya connectors are very bad and not state of the art today. But I have so much old cars with them, on my newer cars with lipo power I use XT60 connectors. 👍

Die Power die der Beetle mit diesem Setup hat ist wirklich schwer beeindruckend ... tut mir nur leid um Deine Karosserie. Und ich teile Deine Meinung - es ist zuviel für so einen schönen Oldie und vor allem nicht notwendig. Aufhängung, Federung und alle anderen Bauteile sind dafür einfach nicht geschaffen. Für das Seriensetup oder sanftes Tuning ist das Upgrade aber unter dem Aspekt der Haltbarkeit sicherlich top.

@@Matteomeier My (freshly bought) Torque Tuned Tamiya Motor died after one summer of intense driving (10-15 hours total). I used a DIY 2s4p Li-Ion battery most of the time (running time: 40min). The last run in the grass and the fallen leaves must have been too much heat for the motor....There was also quite steep inclination...All 3 factors together were too much heat strain, I guess (though it was quite cold outside => 9 degrees centigrate). Imagine that scenario with the higher rpm 540 Standard motor and during the summertime !!! So I upgraded to brushless now.

GIANT Thumbs UP for this, WOW. I did cringe as the license plate flew off, but it didn't affect you at all, what a pro. I think the body you have is now a trophy for such a great first run with the Super Ball diff. I think Parma made the lexan body for the MB, but no decals of course and perhaps Kamtech made a good one that fits in lexan too over on that side of the pond. I have to rework my classic MB with this to enjoy it more. WHEELIE bar and perhaps a Wild WHEELIE Willy driver figure too. :D

That monster beetle is quick i was wounded when you broke the body i don’t remember the body shells being that weak in fact i gave my friend a go of my vintage mb back in the 90s and he ran it under a moving car it was still driving when it came out of the other side it had turned it into a converable. I am doing a re release beetle body and was wondering if you know any strengthening methods for the body as they are very weak i was thinking like some silver gorilla tape on the weak spots around the inside of the body any surgeons i would like to hear. 👍🏻

In my opinion, hard plastic bodies are always weak. There is no method of strengthening them that would really work. Today's motors are much more powerful than in the past, so they break much more easily. The only thing that can help is to be very careful when driving, or to use a polycarbonate body....

Matteo's RC Movies I raced a Frog back in the days and can't remember (30 years ago 😊) I had many problems with the diff. I used modified motors, but those were brushed... Didn't jump it from too high to... I do remember I used the CRP rear skid plate to protect the gearbox (Ampro makes them to now). Nevertheless this diff looks awesome. Can you adjust the stiffnes? I saw you tighten the screw pretty tight.

Danke Andreas! Ja, wie ich auch im Video sage gehört schon ein sehr feinfühliger Umgang mit dem Gashebel dazu. Und ich denke ein guter Brushed Motor reicht auch völlig aus.

great tutorial ... was it me or did the gearbox go quitely when you compressed the suspension when you run it on the bench. and just like j clarkson says POWER ... yeah I think you will go through a few shells tbh . i have done the same with my stadium blitzer by installing a brushless set up but I have also gone for a set of proline road rage tyres and the handling is far better but as like your shell the rear of my shell takes the brunt of the power as it's became a wheelie machine. i luckily managed to get a new shell

Brilliant and informative video, thanks so much, could I ask a couple of questions as I’ve just bought the MIP as I broke the standard gearbox in the first couple of days! What are the exact specification tools that I need? Your brushless motor seems very powerful, is there an upgrade from the standard motor that is not quite as powerful. Which servo are you using as the ones mine came with seem pretty weak? Many thanks!

I recommend to use a bit better standard motor like the torque tuned motor from Tamiya. The servo I normally use in this cars is a Futaba S9001. You need a set of hex drivers and Philips drivers, of course a pliers.

BuoyEngine Hi Buoy. How are you? The Lunchbox doesnt need this upgrade, the stock diff can handle it perfectly. I thought your Lunchbox was running brushless also?

i got my beetle just after you did this video, but haven't got around to opening it yet, was just wondering what kv motor you installed, if i had to guess i would say 4600kv, I was thinking i might go with a 3800kv or maybe just a safe tamiya torque turned motor, like you said i don't want to destroy the car, on a side note i couldn't help but notice your California shirt that's where i live, you are a very cool dude, as the Californians say.

yes, born in orange county and lived in southern California, no cold or snow, but moved to northern California 10 years ago ,big difference, here it gets below freezing quite often in winter, my wife and kids think its the north pole, was filming yesterday to show how rc motors can overheat when over geared but it was 20 degrees and motor never even got warm, maybe will try again in summer..

Great video, I had an original in 1986, and have built the new one. I watched the whole video trying to get an idea on what KV you were running, and could not figure it out. I ordered a 3000kv system for mine, and will be getting the Ampro rear suspension system/MIP diff. I am basically building the Beetle I wish I had in 1986. I bet I had in the top 1% of mileage on a single RC car with that thing. Daily driven for years.... I cut slots in the diff/axle cups in mine when I was about 10, and put in Tamiya Striker/Futaba FX-10 dog bones with the stock cups, lol!

It's the 4600kv motor from the Sidewinder 3 combo. It works with every battery but have more power with lipo. Search on google where you can get it in your area. 😊

Geile Siech! if you replace all shocks suspensions with metal ones and add a rear stabilizer you can have loads of fun without breaking anything (of the chassis..).

Danke für dein Video und vor allem über dein Kommentar ob ein Tuning sein muss oder nicht. Ich schaue deine Videos sehr gerne weil sie zu den Besten auf dem Markt gehören und mit soviel Können gemacht sind. Vor über 30 Jahren hatte ich einen Monster Beetle von Tamiya und dann irgendwann verkauft. Da mir dieses Modell nie aus dem Kopf gegangen ist habe jetzt wieder den Bausatz der 2015 Version im Hobbyraum stehen. Das freute mich sehr das Tamiya den Beetle wieder aufgelegt hat ! Ich werde ihn wie früher auch Original belassen und außer Kugellagern und dem Getriebe nichts ändern. Die Leistung reicht vollkommen aus. Meiner Meiner Meinung nach sollte auch was die Fahrleistungen betrifft vernünftig und Modell spezifisch damit umgegangen werden. Was nutzt das ein Modell mit aller Liebe und Sorgfalt zu bauen und es dann mit ein paar Fahrten kapput oder schrottreif zu fahren? Das hat nicht viel mit Modellbau zu tun. Es mag vielleicht komisch klingen aber eine gewisse Achtung und Respekt vor dieser Materie , ihren Entwicklern und Produzenten , sollte schon vorhanden sein . Gerade jetzt in Corona Zeiten ist wohl jedem bewusst das nicht alles selbstverständlich ist. Tamiya z.B. hat seit Monaten Lieferprobleme. Der Monster Beetle war jetzt über längere Zeit fast nicht mehr zu bekommen , genauso wie viele andere Modelle . Das Kaufen und Bauen dieser fantastischen Modelle und das Fahren dürfen , ist ein hohes gut und erfüllt einen mit Freude und Spaß. Das sollte man nicht vergessen und alles als selbstverständlich warnehmen weil es eben nicht selbstverständlich ist. Ein Hoch auf den Modellbau und die Freude die er mit sich bringt !

Aber auch neuere Modelle verlangen nach einem respektvollen Umgang mit dem Gashebel. you can probably reduce the start punch to reduce the torque further + going with a lower kv motor. (id put 3000 kv on 2s at best with reduced start punch at best.)
