I throw mini pots to test new glazes and glaze combos and it’s great to fit in between large pieces of pottery in the kiln. They sell really well.

Thanks for demoing this technique!! I appreciate that your videos are actual time. Helps me see wheel speed and such.

Having a plan for a bunch of glaze testing I thought I would make up a whole S-load of little pots like this instead of using test tiles. What I found is that it was very hard to duplicate shapes. Slight differences in the amount of clay that you pull up off the hump makes a big difference in small pots. But for glaze testing I guess they don't have to be quite the same.

I throw lots of mini pots.... i wedge 3 lbs if clay into a cylinder approx 3 inches dia by 8 inches long. Then I wire off narrow pieces of clay onto the wheel. Its like cutting up cookies. You can adjust the diameter of the cylinder. And thickness of each piece.

Thank you for sharing this tip, Matthew! I look forward to seeing your approach to lidded minis as well. I woodfired minis and was quite pleased with the results!😊

I use a metal rib for cutting off the hump. I wet the one side of the rib that im cutting with. then push in at the same undercut joint as in your video. once the rib cuts half way through it will be sitting on the rib. it makes for transferring the pot to another board easy. Just another thing to try if your intrested:)

I did this for Christmas presents one year. I didn't know about the fishline trick though, and had to sand some pots afterwards. Thanks.

Great tip Matthew! I don't like making minis for the same reason!! Do you use a groggy clay always? JW

You will often see Hsin-Chuen Lin cutting off the hump with a bit of kite string

Thanks for always producing awesome, informative videos. One question is if you throw off the hump, you can't compress the bottom. Does that lead to s cracks?

I had actually tried this last week but with a thicker cord type string. That didn't work well. I'm going to give fishing line a shot, that looks to work perfectly in your video.

Could you do that cutting technique with a large pot?
