I have a Canon 500d but I use the phone all the time. You have it all the time and once I have shot some footage I just use a combination of IMovie on the phone and the GoPro apps. Maybe not the best quality but for the small videos I do it works for me. I would like a slightly better video editor for the IPhone, any recommendations? Maybe a next video tutorial for you Matti? Shoot and edit a Travel Feels on an iPhone..🤔 Great videos 👍🏻📸🎥🎅🏼

Really love that you made this video Matt, it’s absolutely true - being a creator either runs in your blood or it doesn’t. If it does, you will create with whatever you have around you, because it’s what you love to do.... I personally have been making shorts with my iphone for years, and have loved every moment. I’ll be upgrading to FF DSLR soon, simply because I’ve outgrown it from a technical standpoint, and need a higher quality codec. This set up looks fantastic, perfect for on the go shooting ⚡️⚡️

Late to the comment thread, but I thought it might be useful to mention why I chose an iPhone SE and the Freefly Movi for video. I'm the content manager for a small private school that is cutting edge in its methods (the kids get top grades and HATE it when summer vacation comes around). I've shot thousands of stills but now we need short video, and I'll have to be invisible and shoot at least 70 percent from kid's-eye-level. For that, the Movi seems perfect, and I can get high-quality ultrawide (18mm equiv.) lenses for a fraction of the cost of FF or APS-C. The Movi arrived today, the iPhone SE comes tomorrow, and I'm looking forward to a fun school year.

you know i started with a Canon T5i and in my opinion for beginners the learning curve and limitations you get with your smartphone just pushes you to that next level, even in confidence to then use better tools way more precise. I am glad to have an iphone 6s plus with filmic pro, couple of lenses and gimbal, its just so compelling to not run after conventional think patterns and try your own art :-) later on when you master the craft of cinematography and storytelling, you can use any camera you want until then i suggest anybody to start with a smartphone ;-)

anthonypeart4132 but it means that in your current state as a filmmaker your not earning enough to justify it. So from an earning stand point - you’re not ready for it. It’s like investing. You should start with earning with what you have, OR if you are really ready, buy something with a loan. Cos you are ready right? I wouldn’t risk that, but I’m also a guy who thinks that if you can’t afford something, you aren’t ready for it... ;/

Question about the mobile freefly: Can you flip the arm in front to the back side (between you and the phone)? Because in the hyperlapse you can see it sticking out from the right a few times - or what part was that if it wasn't the forward arm? I know you can flip the phone - but the grip seems to have buttons/joysticks so would like to operate those and see the screen (even though the forward arm would be partially in the way). -Joonas

I feel like this video missed the biggest issue with mobile phone filming: audio. I have the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 and if you don't have a headphone jack, getting audio into the phone is impossible due to the placement of the bumper on the gimbal covering the center port on the bottom of the phone. But that's okay because that gimbal was consciously made to make it as difficult as possible to attach a hot shoe to it to get a mic on it. So even if you could connect a mic, you'd still have to solve the problem of mounting it. What about that one you're messing with? It looks very similar in this regard. The bumper is covering up the port on the bottom of the phone. (Side note: DJI doesn't sell a counterweight for the Osmo Mobile 2 and the one from the first gen model doesn't fit. Maybe the motor can compensate for the Moment lens, but I have my doubts. My lens is on order, so I'll report back when it shows up. I have my doubts though as to whether using a Moment lens with the Osmo Mobile 2 is even possible. I'm brand new to all of this but from what I've seen so far, a rig like the one in the video is made for b-roll. He didn't also use that same rig to shoot the talking head part of the video. Like a drone, it's just another tool in the toolbox. Double side note: Gimbal companies: just put a hole in the bumper at the bottom of the phone so we can still plug in. Figure it out please. And DJI in particular... what's the use of having a charging USB-A port on the handle of the gimbal if they knew they were designing the device in such a way that phones couldn't use it while filming. And if you're using it when you're not filming, since it's USB-A, fast charging isn't possible. I saw this feature get thumbs up from everybody who has reviewed the Osmo 2 but I highly doubt any of them actually used it. If there's a frustrating aspect to filming with a mobile phone, it's that these devices don't seem entirely thought through. Both the app and the hardware for DJI's Osmo Mobile 2 could use a few more revisions to make a really great, usable product. But if what you wanna do is run around with a stabilized shot for b-roll then it's true that they do a really nice job of that. They certainly have achieved that competency. Solve the ability to add an external mic, shove all the features of Filmic Pro into the DJI app, and address the counterbalance issues (Moment is who will do that but it should fall to DJI to know this will be an issue.), and we'll be getting somewhere.

I’ve definitely thought about using my phone to add bits of footage. I’ve even used it as a 2nd video camera on a personal shoot. I wasn’t able to match the two footages from the DSLR and the phone so they looked the same. But it worked out and gave me some great ideas of capturing additional footage with different angles and viewpoints to add to a fixed DSLR position. It’s kinda nice to have all these options available I you depending on the film and what you may have with you. I couldn’t agree more about practicing the craft. It can be hard going from photography, where you’re pretty accomplished, to video where you’re almost staring from the bottom again, or at least it can feel like it when you don’t yet know how to get the shots you want. Have a great weekend Matti & thanks for your continued inspiring content. Cheers JT
