Great tips, Matti. I am in the process of building my small business too, had it for a year, but it is first now the past two weeks I have been aggressive. I have gone to local businesses and asked if they need videos, given my information, and made a website. I have spent a lot of money, on boring stuff such as business cards and websites, domains, etc. but it is really the things that will help me more than my camera gear. And having the courage to go outside and try. I have hesitated for months as I am afraid of failure, but the only way to fail is to not start. I am still not sure if I will make it, but I will at least try more, so your video really helped me. About budgets... I am terrible at giving prices and I know it is personal and varies from person to person, but I am offering to make commercials and corporate videos for around 500 Dollars for a finished product+ money back guarantee if they don't like it. I feel like I could charge more, but I am not comfortable asking for more. And I know I should never offer them the opportunity to back out of the deal, but it is a way that is safer in case I mess up the video. What do you think about that? Any advice? I live in Norway, congratulations on the new camera, can't wait to see your stuff! 🙂

It's good to discuss the purchase with your accountant ahead of time too. They may shock you and tell you that although you have the cash on hand to buy it, business-wise it's of more benefit to you financially to incur some "smart debt" that will help your bottom line.

I think we have passed the stage where there is a need to upgrade new cameras. You could still be a great filmmaker with a 1080p camera but watching yourself waste money like that is the opposite of motivating. You might be bigger than Casey Naistat or Peter McKinnon by now, but continuing to give unsolicited advice may have been bad strategy. You always talk about making great videos but your videos should say that on their own, not the cameras you buy or the advice you give. You should bring Travel Feels back to life and make us proud with your creativity making great videos on a low budget. Focus on showing very expensive equipment instead of showing what can be done with them something that many fans can't follow you on. Interest is lost to see you take off with teams that we cannot have and without showing results. Your life doesn't have to be interesting and you don't have to make up a fictional drama, but writing shorts or making stories would be absolutely sublime coming from you.

I usually rent RED and HaselBlad when I need them for specific shoots. (Haven't used an Arri) So far my rental costs are way less than a purchase. If I used them all the time, only then, I would consider a purchase.

If you’re buying it ti help you motivate you to create new and interesting projects, indi films, documentaries, commercial gigs etc… then go for it!! If not… oh well… as you mentioned.. you can always rent it out or sell it. In order to call yourself a film maker… you have to have actually made a film. Myself included… a videographer is not a Film Maker. I feel you might use this term loosely. That being said… you have been super motivational in helping me in this new world of cinematography! Thank you!

Honestly since covid (which was the same year I graduated college) I have worked on 3 feature films, one big budget like non profit short film, a corp doc, and I will be filming a fourth feature in may. The majority of those projects I got because of the producers I networked with as well as people who ended up being directors for other projects later on.

Ok, I'm getting a feeling that you have real plans for your new camera. :D But my take on buying expensive stuff in general is that it's completely OK as a video maker, KZbinr or as an entrepenour, if it's something that you really want and feel that it improves the quality of your life, even if it's for the sake just getting fun gear. But you have to be honest to yourself: is it a business decision? Is it something that pays itself back as better videos etc? Or is it just something you want to and can affford it? I know the best ways to improve my content would be to improve my presentation, fluency with English, storytelling etc. But fun gear is still fun gear. But naturally I do KZbin 90% as a hobby so I can concentrate even more on the fun part.
