Stations do have some use: using a lander with a fuel factory, you can store fuel in the station, meaning that SSTOs can be refuelled limitless times, and in turn will be able to transport kerbals, ship ore to other stations, maybe even customize modular stations and even refuel craft stranded on the surface of any planet.

I think I've figured out why Kerbin is almost entirely uninhabited. Most of the Kerbals live underground. If only because that they have VERY good reasons for fearing that the sky will fall on them. Sky, fuel tanks, deorbited satellites, space stations, even Kerbalnauts attempting to re-enter Kerbals atmosphere. Space exploration is so important to the Kerbals that they chose to move the entire population underground, rather than force their Space agency to worry about what kind of damage say a nuclear powered reactor crashing into some inhabited areas. Not that the Kerbalnauts would worry about such unimportant civilian casualties in the first place, not when there is tasty science to uncover. It's also why they have a nearly unlimited budget. After all, once they have discovered all of the science and have used it to start colonizing the Kerbal system, they can move back to the surface.

You should build a deep-space colony...basically a huge station with all the facilities to sustain Kerbal life. You could either do it in multiple launches, do a one-launch, or assemble it in orbit. When you speak of "The Kraken," are you referring to the bug where complex designs spontaneously begin to vibrate, and ultimately shake themselves apart? I haven't played in a while, but I believe I found a solution for that years ago. It was especially likely after two vehicles are docked. It seemed to be a conflict between two controlling parts. To avoid it, simply right click on any part with the option "control from here." It doesnt matter which. Choose that option, and problem solved. I use autostrut all the time. Since the middle part has monoprop thrusters that at least allow forward/backward movements and you can swing the part in any direction, you can not only speed up and slow down along the part, but also in the other axes by turning the part orthogonal to the docking axis. Additionally a north-south orientation often helps to keep the spacecraft pointing in the same direction (system-wide north) ...

KSP 2 will (most likely) have orbital assembly, which should let us build stuff like this without having to use docking ports or the like. Every docking port adds a joint rather than a rigid assembly point, which is why the game lets stuff flex around the ports, which is really annoying. But I find the docking port sr makes stuff slightly more rigid, even if it's still not completely solid like we want it to be. For alignment the docking port alignment mod is invaluable, and really should've been part of the game, but sadly now with 1.12.3 and KSP2 almost ready, there will likely not be any more added features

there are a couple of mods i always get. tweakscale, reentryparticles, mechjeb, FlightEngineer, chatterer, and then a cryo tank and cryo engine part packs. other than that, i typically dont bother with mods. ive tried and tried to get RSS working and would LOVE it, but never could get it working on any KSP version. and then, ive tried EVE, and realistic atmospheres, but i just couldnt get them looking right. made kerbin look like a cloudy snowball.
