regarding the toughness of dragon hide mentioned at 17:49 - having read the first 2 books religiously as a child, I can confirm that Saphira's hide is supposed to be so tough that as Eragon learns to ride her, her scales cut through his pants and rub raw both of his inner thighs, to the point where book 1 talks about him struggling to walk while healing because the thigh-sized scabs would crack and he would bleed again. Later books note his inner thighs are basically all scar tissue as a result. So yeah, that hit shouldn't have done shit.

Eragon was circlejerked so much when I was in middle school because the author was 15 when he wrote it. The game being decent is a surprise.

I always felt weirdly offended by the “he was only 15!” thing when these books were popular, because I was about 15 and had ALSO written my own fantasy stories, and while they were absolutely awful, at least I made an effort to make them creative and unique instead of copying the plot of Star Wars and the setting of LotR. :[

Eragon was a really fun read, and, despite what some people say, I actually really enjoyed the sequels...except for the ending. I think the movie did the same shit as The Last Airbender did. Sure, they generally addressed primary plot points, but it was done in a very poor way that essentially guaranteed the impossibility of a sequel. E.g. Eragon receives a wound from the villain that tried to take the egg from Arya at the beginning, and it becomes an actually important detail in the sequel, Eldest, because now he's effectively partly crippled and can't train correctly. This sours some of the Elves' perceptions of him because he's supposed to be their big weapon against the emperor, but now he's busted. If I recall, he gets out of the fight basically totally fine in the movie. Also, Saphira has feathers in the movie for....no apparent reason.

They were pretty entertaining reads for a teen but I doubt they'd hold up well if I read them again now. The film was atrocious though and even if it did do well at the box office (it didn't), it would have been hard to make a sequel because it killed off some characters that play a pretty major role in the later books.
