So we got a call for a 1975 International Scout 20 miles in the desert backcountry. We had to drag up the mountains and through some rough terrain.

I had two scouts. I would say Randy was telling the truth in both respects. Those scouts weren't the most refined truck ever made, but they were tough as nails. They were solid off-roaders stock, and with solid axles and leaf srpings on both ends, prettty easy to lift and throw some big tires on. The bad news was that the bodies were crap, and they were gas hogs, as you might expect of a 5,000 lb. truck with a carbureted V-8.

@@calebbyers Just because he said it is loud and rough (the truth) doesn't mean he didn't mean it when he said it was nice. Those qualities are to be expected on older trucks. Thats just what they are, but still awesome.

Where I am in Oz, no ropes, straps or chains onroad, rigid bar only- I got one I made up back in the nineties, got a 80mm Ubolt welded on one end, and a standard trailer hitch on the other, both ends with safety chains welded on... With that, perfectly legal to flat tow here, longest trip I did was towing a kombi with a blown motor back nearly 600km (370 miles)- even has a trailer plug at the hitch end and a socket at the other for the light bar off my boat- tuck the cable through the cab and occy strap it to the rear end- that way it's even got lights lol

Once had to replace the starter on my 1974 Scout in the driveway in Bismarck ND. It was -20 F at the time. Hardest part was starting the new bolts in the new starter. Had to bring them inside to warm up so I could handle them; that took 3 or 4 tries. I had the Scout raised 3 or 4 inches so all I had to do was turn the front wheel and reach in behind it. It had been working fine, switched it off and the starter was done. When I took the back cover off it little pieces fell out.

@@MAVORlC - Yeah, but at some point you're carrying an extra half a truck with you in anticipation of breaking something. It's easy to watch a video of someone with a broke down vehicle, and say "well, it's an old POS, and he should've had spare parts with him", but you never know what's going to break next, and at some point you have to cut off the weight gains. Also, Scouts aren't the roomiest trucks around, either. I should know, I've owned nine of them.

@@tylerjohn4607 - Even when the vehicle is dead, if it's moving, steering a PS equipped vehicle isn't too bad. Trying to turn a power steering equipped vehicle with a dead engine at a stand still... that's where the phrase "power steering by Armstrong" came into being. Also, this vehicle is new enough that power brakes came on it standard, as I believe it was law by that point. But yeah, you just about have to stand on the pedal when there's no vacuum for the brake booster.
